With the off-season schedule beginning to take off, more and more opportunities for mat time become available, and we all know if you want to get better, this is the way to do it. I know typically some coaches form teams to go to Disney Duals, Jazz Town Duals, and Virginia Beach Duals, but not every kid has the resources to attend these types of tournaments. So, I wanted to throw out a pitch of an 8-Team Club Cup for some extra fun and mat time for guys who want to get better, those preparing for a career in college, or as a last hurrah for anyone concluding their wrestling career in high school.

16 weight classes (Standard NFHS weights + two additional)
    94 - 100 - 106 - 113 - 120 - 126 - 132 - 138 - 145 - 152 - 160 - 170 - 182 - 195 - 220 - 285
    • Wrestlers get 2 lb. allowance
    • Participants can range from incoming 8th graders to newly graduated seniors
    • Coaches are allowed to have anyone from any school wrestle for their club
    • Teams separated by pool play

    A sample as follows
    Pool A
    - Red Cobra
    - CIA
    - MXW
    - Perry Meridian WC

    Pool B
    - Franklin WC
    - Contenders Wrestling
    - Maurer Coughlin
    - Indiana Outlaws

Teams wrestle each other in a round robin with a guaranteed bye. After the round robin ends, they wrestle for placement based upon record.

With Freestyle and Greco season upon us, I’ve even thought of it being a Freestyle or Greco dual type of deal, or Ironman in which they wrestle a different style each period, or it can be simply Folkstyle.

Also, with more and more people being vaccinated and the weather getting warmer, it’d be kind of unique to have it outside on a football field, that way more people can attend.

Just an idea. If anyone’s interested or has some sort of suggestion, please comment below.

In a hypothetical dual meet, I have PM winning a close one.

    Dickey over Billerman MD 4-0
    Ellis over Cottey Dec 7-0
    Wright over Fair Dec 10-0
    Seltzer over McKinley Dec 13-0
    B. Bailey over Koontz Dec 16-0
James over L. Bailey Dec 16-3

    Rypel over Masengale MD 23-15
    Tonte over Stewart Dec 23-18
    Moore over Hasbrook Dec 23-21
    Adams over Bernard 23-24

You can argue whether or not at 145 Slivka gives up a fall to LeCount, but LeCount in 2014 at 145 did in fact pin both Tommy Forte and Ben Harvey and pinned 2x champ Jake Covaciu the year prior, while en route to repeat Slivka did give up a major to Donnell Washington earlier in the season, so I’m going with the bonus on LeCount’s side.

Caleb Wyss of Franklin Community went on an absolute tear this past weekend, finishing 4th at 126. He was up 7-1 on Brayden Lain before unfortunately getting caught in a throw and pinned, but he rallied back four or five straight wins in the consolation bracket before falling to Josh Johnson 6-3 in the third place match. I was highly impressed with his top work throughout the weekend and his scrambling abilities. If he can put together a great summer and transfer it to next season, he can build on his semi-state qualification from this past year and potentially run to the bank.

I remember the score and I remember the round, I’m just unsure why I said Forte, haha. Forte beat Kellen VanCamp from Lebanon in the finals that year, though. I remember talking to Gabe after the match and we both agreed the match should’ve been the finals, but I think he got runner-up or third at Semi-State the week before.

Off the top of my head, I'll go:

    Austin Bethel (Mount Vernon (Posey))
    - 4× IHSAA State Qualifier (2014-17)
    - Pinned Joe Lee in Sectional finals in 2014
    - Only loss of Brayton Lee's career
    - 2018 NCAA Division III All-American (3rd, 149)

    Zach Pierson (Perry Meridian)
    - IHSAA State Qualifier (215, 2001)
    - 2000 Cadet Freestyle All-American (6th, 209)
    - 2000 Cadet Greco-Roman All-American (4th, 209)
