  1. Certainly within the context of this forum if not in a broader sense. Teacher, teacher, teach me well.
  2. Is there any such thing as an un-biased opinion? All opinions are affected and formed by biases, acknowledged or otherwise. So allow me to acknowledge my bias for Nick Lee as best pound for pound. The good news is that there is no bias to my bias. It is purely biased.
  3. I love the analysis. Your explanation for the relative success of 4s in the quarterfinals passes the sniff test. But I am wondering if the #4 coin flip in the quarterfinal round is really a small sample size phenomenon and that over a longer time period that percentage will dip. Particularly since it is being driven by 4's over 3's where there are only 9 observations. Were you able to look at the 6 winners over 3's and confirm your scenario played out? I will be disappointed come Monday when I won't be getting my wrestling stat fix anymore.
  4. Awesome move. And he wins it (third) all.
  5. even better. Except the breath holding part.
  6. Ockham's Razor states that among competing hypothesis the one with the fewest assumptions should be chosen. This explanation makes no assumptions about whether a kid might be ducking another kid and, therefore, gets my vote as the most likely explanation. Put another way, what are you nuts? Why assume someone is ducking a guy because they are at different weights? Wouldn't everyone be ducking everyone else in the weight above or below them by that theory? The most likely explanation is that the wrestler chose the right weight for their body.
  7. Every pair is unique: Bo and Blake Davis lead the pairs with 88 total wins (against 10 loses) Nick and Joe Lee have the best win percentage at 98.4% (61-1) Bo and Hunter Hiestand are the only pair in the same grade (12) Evan and Ethan Smiley are the only pair with the maximum spread in grades (12 and 9) Riley and Justin Akers are one of only two pairs where the younger out-weighs the elder (195 vs 138) and theirs is by the largest margin Jake and Nate Weimer have the greatest family parity (0.174% diff in win %)
  8. That is a good number when you consider that: 1.) the spread between the 16 and the 17, or 18, 19, 20 etc. wrestler is probably pretty small and therefore something of a greater judgement call, and 2.) most of the ranked wrestlers who do not advance probably come from the low end of the rankings (12 - 16). If that is the case then the degree of error on a weighted basis shrinks even further.
  9. In Illinois they do it around rather than during. They had regionals for team already (in their hierarchy regionals come before sectionals and there is no semi-state), but then they pause the team race for the individual series, which last three weeks instead of four. Next week, after individual titles are determined, they resume the team series with sectionals and state on consecutive weekends.
  10. To add to that, they are kids playing a sport, but at a very high level (not quite professional level, but a far cry from beginner). I agree that the refs should be chosen more like what happens in professional sports. It is an honor to work the most important games and that honor is reserved for the best. The refs are rated throughout the season (as we all are at work or play) and they earn the right to work under the lights. If you really want the quality of refereeing to improve then there needs to be an incentive for improvement. That is how humans are wired. We respond to rewards. If it works that way for the athletes (they have to earn their way to the mat), why not for the refs too?
  11. There is absolutely no good way to award a team title in the current format, because no one has their team there. Anything they do will be a bad option. I think it is a waste to worry about the best bad option. Y2 compared one of the alternate proposals (adding points from all four rounds) to adding up the points a football team scores in the season. The current format is akin to picking the best team by adding up who has the most all-staters on their team. There is no getting around the fact that the current format assesses the team based on the performance of a few individuals. That is the antithesis of the team concept. So trying to make marginal adjustments around that core concept is meaningless. Accept that the team title means little in the current format and lobby for a true team championship with whole teams represented. They do it next door in Illinois, why not in Indiana?
  12. While we wait for the "official" FTL, who are the "Ford Tough Locks" in everyone's opinion?
  13. all this wasted energy on the brackets when you could all be solving the Kennedy assassination.
  14. yep, put one of the lower ranked SS winners on one side with James and the other with Lee and Cash would have seemed more sensible.
  15. ITB, can you expand on Lee / Todrank situation? Unfortunately, I wasn't in the bleachers and with no video I could only follow on Track Wrestling. I saw there was an early caution/warning (thought it was to Todrank, but memory is poor so coulda been Lee) and the scoring seemed to stop often. Wasn't sure if it was the website or if there were stops in the match for some reason. With it being their third final in three weeks against each other thought there might be fireworks.
  16. I thought it was established in the Evansville SS preview that data was 'turrible'
  17. Grammar aside, you make a good point, In The Bleachers. They hold the matches for a reason. We can crown anyone we want on a forum and they will hold the tournament anyway to see who actually wins. That said, I crown N Lee. UnapologeticLee, UnrepententLee. You are also right that he is a no excuses guy. I think everyone at this level is. That is how they get to this level. Honest assessments of their talents and their weaknesses leads to harder work that produces results. Can't wait to see what those results are.
