  1. Jacob Moran is the Sophomore, not sure where he attends school. Jesse Mendez is a 7th grade student, so 2 years before his impact is felt.
  2. If you all only knew the half of it. They fired their first coach and AD, who won 2 titles and was a runner up because there was questionable activities going on. The latest coach that was fired, who was also AD tried to place blame on the principal for his playing illegal players, the place is a joke. I know there have been successful wrestling coaches who have been fired in the past, but the Bowman situation takes the cake.
  3. I just disagree that going there makes that big of a difference with regard to exposure. Doing well on the national scene is just as effective. Howe, Micic, Hughes, Escobedo, and the Tsirtsis brothers all did well staying in Indiana. Going over the border to Mt. Carmel would get them higher leverage matches and probably a few more losses, but those I mentioned would have met their full potential regardless of where they went to school.
  4. Can you provide me with the name of an Indiana kid that attended Mt. Carmel, who that got more exposure and was provided a better opportunity in college than they would have had at their home school?
  5. Small goals, beating the reigning champion might be first on the list of things to do before we go anointing them the team to beat.
  6. Him sitting out until this time next year would be a travesty, but your outlook on this is something people could learn from. Thanks for sharing your story and being transparent, I'm a fan.
  7. Ok so take all that you put into print as fact, I disagree with some of your "facts", which is healthy on a discussion board. I agree that many families don't own their homes, and a rental is a home I will agree, as is temporary housing, like living with another family. The owning of their home in CP is inconsequential, I will also agree with. I also agree a family can attend any school they'd like, but those families aren't free of the consequences that come from that move, especially if there are untruths involved. When/If we are made privy to why the transfer was not allowed, we will find out who was wrong and who was right. I didn't call anyone out, just saying let's not make the boys victims just yet.
  8. I didn't open anything, I said if they moved into a residence in Portage and that can be proved, I'll eat crow. You have your facts and I guess I'll take what I've been told as fact. Clearly our "facts" differ, so we can wait until it plays out. I'll leave with this, if they moved and that can be proven, why would the IHSAA or DOE prevent them from participating in athletics, that seems like the complete opposite of their mission? With all of the laws that exist that benefit student transfers, it seems odd that this one struck a chord with both the IHSAA and DOE. I could honestly care less about CP and all their wrong doings. I was a big fan of the Moran brothers and still am, but right is right and wrong is wrong.
  9. Do your own investigative work. If they moved to a home in Portage and sold their home in Crown Point and you can prove the address is a HOME in Portage, I'll eat crow.
  10. Make sure you have your facts correct before making a statement like this.
  11. Wrestling is a tough sell to any kid, but middle school might be the most difficult because it's hard for them to look past the next hour of their lives. Kids today live in an immediate satisfaction world and wrestling isn't something that most kids are successful at during their first year, especially when they are bigger 6th grade kids. We always tell our kids that they need to weather the storm, work hard, with the ultimate goal being dishing out beatings of their own by 8th grade. It helps having feel good stories like Jake Kleimola, kids who weren't good early on, but worked their tail off to eventually become a state champion. We try to get kids back and remind them of the ultimate goal we spoke about when they don't come back out as 7th graders, but as Fabio said, sometimes it's addition by subtraction if they aren't committed. I'd rather have 20 that want to be there than 30, 10 of which you have to beg to stay and get off the bus every other day. We are a corporation of three middle schools, so if we get 5-10 kids to come out as freshman, I feel we did our job.
  12. I've been to state at least 18 times (paid every time) and I was nowhere near 100 wins.
  13. The 3rd place match at 126 will be great. 2 guys who will be in the hunt come February.
  14. Great family, my condolences to Jim and the family.
  15. I don't have a child that attends RWA but can tell you it's easy to see those who attend in our wrestling room. Like anything it may not be for everyone, but the old saying, iron sharpens iron definitely applies. Our middle school program has little to offer the elite kids, and they get quality instruction, with better partners at RWA. Portage and Merrillville are two Region programs that develop from within, which is great, especially when you factor the cost of RWA. RWA is a luxury that kids from the Region and neighboring states and cities benefit from greatly.
  16. I'm going to date myself a bit here, but I remember in the late 90's when Kevin English tried to move to Portage and was eventually denied eligibility. If I'm not mistaken, he was allowed to wrestle the entire year, but was then found ineligible later in the year when they had the official hearing and not allowed to participate in the state series. This was a long time ago, so I could be getting details mixed up, but I swear he had 30 matches wrestled when he was found ineligible. I only bring it up because that might be the middle ground here. Allow them to wrestle until the move is either found to be legal or not legal according to the IHSAA. If the move is proven to be legitimate, they didn't miss anything, if they are found to be ineligible, then they lose out on the state tournament, which in essence why you wrestle during the season.
  17. The only thing I can surmise is that CP was drawing their line in the sand and letting kids know that they couldn't just leave without a consequence. CP lost its longtime coach to retirement, one wrestler to Mt. Carmel, and then were about to lose 2 more to Portage. Perhaps this was their way of closing the doors and sadly it's the Moran brothers paying the price. I hope they do get to wrestle because we only get 4 years of high school. I get both sides of the argument, but as another poster mentioned, it's ironic and funny that CP is now the moral police of transfers.
  18. Cummings, Cavanaugh, and Black are great leg riders, but much different than Drew. Drew took top as an offensive position, where those three use it to prevent the opposing wrestler from getting one point, so more of a defensive position. Given the choice, Drew takes top every time because he has the ability to turn people and score from top position, I'm not sure that's the case for the other guys. No one from the Region sticks out to me as a true leg rider (scorer), some good one's in recent memory are Truver and Wartman from LC, Mavros and Roadruck from Lowell. Its' funny because those four and Drew weren't particularly good from their feet, so they relied heavily on getting top position to score points and win matches. Cummings, Cavanaugh, and Black are good from their feet, so maybe that is why they don't rely so much on turning guys from the top position and don't stick out in my mind.
  19. True, but many more have not, hence the qualifier MOST.
  20. So like the Hotel California, you can come to Crown Point, you just can't leave.
  21. If I'm reading between the lines correctly, he means that Drew is at a weight where most underclassmen and certainly true freshmen do not come in and see a lot of success. The lighter weights, while still no joke, have more underclassmen that realize success.
  22. I'd like to give you an unbiased opinion on the Avon/Brownsburg match-up, which I watched via the stream. I like watching good wrestling and I was very glad I tuned in. First, both are dynamite teams that would give anyone fits, second, I left far more impressed with the Brownsburg kids than I did with the Avon kids. This isn't bashing, just my opinion. The Brownsburg kids seemed far more prepared for the match and were always on the offensive. It seemed that even in the match-ups where they weren't "favored" the kids went out and wrestled like no one told them they were supposed to lose. It was early in the season so to Avon's credit, they have time to fix those things. As for Garcia, until he's beaten this year, he's the guy to beat, period. I saw the PM kid at the Harvest Classic, he's the real deal and will give Garcia all he can handle, but as they say, have to beat the champ to be the champ.
  23. While it is a fact that Hebron does not have a state qualifier, their program is relatively new, around 5 years old if I'm not mistaken, so it's not entirely shocking that they've yet to realize any level of success.
  24. I know this isn't going to be a popular opinion, but when discussing his high school legacy, how do number of state titles not matter? I loved that he chased the best and in the end he will be better for it, but the fact remains, he is a one time champion, assuming he doesn't come back this year. The match with Red was probably the most exciting and highly anticipated match I've witnessed and while they didn't disappoint, Red won, cementing his legacy as one of the best. His loss to Micic in the semi-finals was also highly anticipated, but anticlimactic to say the least. I know that Lee was a freshman, but he was dominated in that match and the final result shows that. My opinion (which is no more than that of a casual fan) is that he is a top 10 wrestler of all time despite his one title, but his losses are a black eye on the overall resume'. Quick note, I know he chose to attend Penn State, but I always thought his relentless style was better suited for Iowa, reminds me of a young Metcalf.
  25. I never said you worked in a school, once again I have to dummy things down for you, I implied that many others who visit the site were educators. Also, it's fine, I'm sure I misunderstood Hector when he said he was promised a police job in Brownsburg so you could benefit from his son's wrestling ability, because we all know recruiting is forbidden. Trust me, I know we're not pals, I like people with independent thoughts who don't find it necessary to agree with the majority. What you call anger, I call an independent thought. You enjoy your day as well, and happy recruiting.
