You know, I think as a team Portage is fantastic, but their draws really are brutal
#14 Hegedus at 113 has #9 Casebolt. I put it as 50/50 on who wins that. Potentially 0 points here
#6 Peele at 120 with a brutal draw to get #3 Mattingly in 1st round. Another tossup in my mind, but rankings favor 0 points again
#4 Poynter at 126 gets #3 Viduya in 2nd round. If he loses that one, best he can do is 5th place
I do like #5 Rumph matchups at 138. He has tough matches but winnable. I see good points here
McIntosh is the #1 guy but man having #3 Slivka in round 2 is brutal. That's a huge potential landmine
#3 Washington also with an absolutely brutal draw. First round against Perry's Aiden Warren then 2nd round he gets Brayton Lee. Unless he is a miracle worker, 5th place is the best he is going to get
Drake Guerrero at 170 has #17 Jake Lone in 1st round. If he gets by that, his points will certainly help but he's the underdog and would run into #1 Noah Warren in round 2
#17 Jeremy Torres at 182 has #7 Jonyvan Johnson in opening round. I don't like Torres chances here and if he does win it, Nathan Walton is there in round 2 so again, 5th place is the likely cap
Like I said these are all skilled guys but the way the matchups fall, I just don't see a high side to a lot of their points
Don't forget Moran.
My final prediction after looking more in-depth
1 - Brownsburg (and I don't think it will be close. Potentially 4 in the finals-Mills, Mulkey, Lee, Walton)
2 - Portage (3 potentially in the finals-Moran, Rumph, McIntosh)
3 - Cathedral
4 - Columbus East
5 - Perry Meridian (3 potentially in the finals-Fair, Warren, Cottey)

What's the capacity of the lower section? Reserve these for wrestlers, coaches, families, etc. So the more you qualify for state, the bigger allotment you get in the lower section. So maybe Cathedral gets 100, Portage gets 90, Brownsburg gets 80, etc. all the way down to the school who qualifies one wrestler still gets five tickets in the bottom section. Not sure how the math would actually work but essentially you have to go through the school's allotment to get into the lower section.
The middle and upper sections are open admission for everyone else.
I'm sure this is too much work to ever happen.

Last year the IHSAA deducted all of the "activity points" for the Friday night matches. Assuming they will do the same this year and only count activity bonus points (pin = 2, technical fall = 1.5, major decision = 1) from Saturday morning on.
The other points awarded are for advancement (2.0 per round you move forward) and placement points. Since the advancement and placement points are locked in, here is how the placers will score - the variable then is the bonus activity points.
- 1st = 22 points + bonus on 3 Saturday wins
- 2nd = 18 points + bonus on 2 Saturday wins
- 3rd = 13 points + bonus on 2 Saturday wins
- 4th = 11 points + bonus on 1 Saturday win
- 5th = 9 points + bonus on 2 Saturday wins
- 6th = 7 points + bonus on 1 Saturday win
- 7th = 4 points + bonus on 1 Saturday win
-
8th = 3 points (no bonus possible)
TEAMS IN CONTENTION (and # of wrestlers)
- Indianapolis Cathedral (10)
- Portage (9)
- Columbus East (8)
- Brownsburg (7)
- Mater Dei (6)
- Penn (6)
- Perry Meridian (6)
- Yorktown (6)
- Avon (5)
Chesterton also bringing 6?
My Top 5 prediction:
1. Brownsburg
2. Portage
3. Columbus East
4. Cathedral
5. Chesterton

Didn't someone in the "know" say that the IHSAA won't add wrestlebacks because they don't want to add additional rounds/time to the already existing tournament. So it seems silly to keep beating this topic into the ground. Come up with a solution other than "just add wrestlebacks".
If the IHSAA ever restructures to allow for wrestlebacks, it might mean less wrestlers advance each round. For example, would people be willing to go to 8-man semi-state brackets in order to get wrestlebacks?

Do any of the other IHSAA sports have their Semi-States hosted in venue similar to we do for wrestling?
I wouldn't be surprised if at some point in the future you see a push towards neutral site Semi-State games in football.

Purdue would never let us in, but Mackey would be the best place to hold the semi state. Not a bad seat and tons of room. East Chicago is too far from everyone involved. They have a ton of room, but lets's face it, unless you hang on the railing of one small side of the gym, the view sux. Travel would suck for the region boys to come all the way to Lafayette though. I do think that this amazing tournament needs a better venue. Sorry ECC, you guys run a good tournament, I am just not a fan of the gym. Just my opinion.
I went to the Big 10s at Mackey several years ago (2011?). Good place to watch some wrestling!

Indiana is 17th in population, so that is where you would think we would rank nationally. We shouldn't be compared to California, Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, etc. since they have more people.
We should be compared to states our own size (Tennessee, Massachusetts, Missouri, Maryland, Wisconsin, Arizona, etc.).So I would say we are doing really well compared to other states similar in size.

Is it possible that we can grow the sport through the classed team state duals and leave the individual side alone?
It seems the classed team state duals has had a positive impact on some of the smaller schools (North Posey, Attica, Central Noble, etc.)
-
It sounds like they are not in favor of adding additional rounds, so what would we have to give up? Less kids advance but get wrestlebacks?
Doesnt sound like they will give something for nothing.

No one a lock in this sport . You see it every year, kids getting upset . We’ll take Austin DeSanto from Pennsylvania, pulls off a upset over heavy heavy favorite, #1 Ranked, #1 in the World Champion Spencer Lee. You can even come to this great State and we watched #1 Ranked kid get upset by #4 right before The #1 was about to Tech Fall him he pulls a Head Lock out of No Where to pin the #1. Stunna ! Pretty Sure the #1 was a Lock by most that year. It happens almost every year. Might happen this year, all it takes is Courage to pull the trigger, Courage to get better. So ...... No Locks in this Great Sport. !
Doubt Lee would have lost without a torn ACL

Don't sleep on Mejia...that dude will be a tough out.

I am pretty sure you meant McIntosh at 145. I might consider him closer to a semi-lock.
You're completely correct. I meant McIntosh

11. Pokorney (285) – McWilliams looms large
12. Warren (170) – Warren, Fattore, Brewer (2 of 3 will meet in the semis)
13. Mulkey (138) – another fun weight classUnbelievable depth
14. Rooks (126) – how many guys could realistically win this weight class? 6? More? The quarterfinals on Saturday morning of state will have state finals level matches.

I like the idea of 8 man semi states but you're asking the IHSAA to eliminate half of the people (give or take) who would show up to a semi-state which means less revenue.
Maybe it evens out with more wrestlers (and probably more fans) at each regional.

Definition of best? Is a sectional that is top heavy better than a sectional with a lot of quality teams but not as many dominant teams?
-
Guys ranked
#15 Welch
#6 Micic
#8 Lee
#13 Red
#10 Tsirtsis
#10 Lydy
#18 Streck
So maybe Micic is the only lock to AA right now?

Has anyone actually seen a significant change in weight management practices (across the board) due to the new system?
My gut feeling is NO.
Would love to see a poll on this. My guess is you would see the opinion in the majority.

Not predicting because I have no idea.
But Joe Lees TF of Hatch in the semis and almost TF of Warren in the finals was as impressive as I've seen.
