Nit picky today.  What's your point? Are you saying you want me to play pick'em.  Are you saying I'm biased? Are you saying I don't know what I'm talking about?  Are you playing numbers games?: If so I'm lost because I was a History and Poli Sci major.  Want to ban me because I point out what I said I was?  I already got what I wanted: my school hadn't qualified 3 in over a decade. Nearly 2.  I'll log off for you.

If you aren't going to post your picks, then don't criticize other people's picks. Plain and simple.

You only got 3 out of 56 state qualifiers correct, you are in last place of the pick'ems. Don't run your mouth when you can't keep up with the pack.

  2. 11 left, 2 at 106 and 3 at 132

    106- Mason Jones- Lake Central
    106- Jensen Boyd- Delta
    113- Ayden Bollinger- Delta
    132- Jackson Bradley- Cowan
    132- Tylin Thrine- New Castle
    132- Hayden DeMarco- Chesterton
    138- Tony Wood- Jay County
    144- Easton Doster- New Haven
    175- Aidan Costello- Hobart
    190- Noah Weaver- Rossville
    285- Juan Cruz- Bluffton

I don't care about that. I care when someone says something and they leave us out.  I'm going to point it out when we exceed their expectation.  I had four qualifying and I got 3, I'll take it and a top 10 semi-state finish.  Indianamat didn't have us in the top ten in the semi-state.  Indianamat didn't have us in the top 3 in Carroll Regional.  I'd say we exceeded expectations: definitely something to build on in Year One.  So for future reference I have the Snider guy every time, every weight.

Well none of them won semi-state, so you had 14 wrong there. That's a good start, what about 2nd through 4th placers? You also missed six projected champs that didn't make it to state at all. That's a rough start and we only know 8 of your 56 picks.

Again, you call out two of 56 picks and yet don't post them yourself.

  4. Overall

Another year, another ranking breakdown for the state finals. As always Mike Reiser does a knock out job. He has consistently done a great job with our rankings even with locking them before the first whistle at sectional. This year's total of 193 ranked wrestlers is second only to last year's 200. Most of these wrestlers were in the state rankings at some point and are currently in the semi-state rankings. While ranking high school wrestling is not an easy job, Mike and the rest of the crew make it look easy. As we always say, the best part of the rankings is you get to prove them on the mat. Good luck to all the wrestlers in Evansville.

As always our information center has brackets and will be updated multiple times with information throughout the week. Bookmark this page and check it often for updates.

  8. By Anna Kayser

One year after losing in the quarterfinals and wrestling his way back to fifth place at 106 pounds at the IHSAA State Finals, Lake Central senior Mason Jones is looking to leave it all on the mat.

Throughout his high school career, he hasn’t taken too many losses. Eleven as a sophomore, two a year ago – the second coming in that pivotal quarterfinal match that would inevitably propel him into his final high school campaign – and none thus far as he gears up for semi-state this coming weekend.

If you’re counting along, that means Mason Jones has racked up a lot of wins through three years as a varsity wrestler for Lake Central. There was just more to learn in the losses.

“I feel like I took away from just my overall season last year that there was always more I could do, more I could work towards especially when I came up short,” Jones said. “Last year at state, it felt like everything stopped and that it was all over. I had to take some time, sit down and remember that it wasn’t over, there was still more to go.”

Columbus North junior Justice Thornton is a patient person. In his view, patience is a key to success.

Thornton uses his patience when competing against his family in his favorite board game, Monopoly. He learns what his opponents are trying to do, then he figures out a way to counter their strategy. He’s got a pretty good success rate against his older brother and his two sisters.

But Thornton is not just patient on family game night. He uses the same approach on the wrestling mat where he is a three-time Conference Indiana champion as well as three time sectional and regional champion.

“Monopoly is a game about thinking,” Thornton said. “You have to figure out how you’re going to play. It really correlates to wrestling. In wrestling, you have to figure out what your opponent does and you have to use that against them.”

The idea that “ it’s always been this way why change it now” is an odd way to look at it to me. I get the excitement about the “worst ticket round matches”. But this isn’t about spectator excitement. this is about the best 16 kids making it. Until there is a change you’ll never have the top 16 of each weight on the state floor. I can appreciate you love for the randomness and exciting semi state matches. But just because it has been this way doesn’t mean it shouldn’t ever change.

It's tradition, why make it easier to qualify for state? Are we really wanting all these kids to be soft and have wrestle-backs? Man up and work harder, then you don't have to worry about a supposed bad draw.

This gave me an idea.  If you want to motivate your kids, send me a PM and I'll put up a post picking against your kids.  Price is two hot dogs.

How much if you use a burner account that utilizes the mascot of the ticket round opponent?

Asking for a friend of course.
