Sectional Wrestlers

Since some recent threads won't die, thought I would start a new one.  Who are some of the best to never get past sectional weekend?

A very old friend of mine from high school. Doug Dick from Warren Central class of '94 I believe. Mike and Doug Dick dad coached and has been part of the program for 45+years.

DeKalb had a kid in the early 2010’s who was ranked as high as 9th in the state and never placed higher than 5th at sectionals.

Austin Arnold of Brownsburg I believe won the Avon sectional 3 maybe 4 times and never reached semi state. A little different then not making it out of sectionals.

Prior to the 1971-1972 seasons, sectionals were quite large and only one participant from each weight advanced out of the sectional.  I think it was in the late 60’s (68?) sectional, there was a wrestler from Muncie South whose last name was Metcalf.  He may well have been the 2nd best heavyweight in the state. Many certainly expressed that as an emphatic opinion for sure.  Unfortunately for him, he was in the same sectional as Muncie Central’s legendary and future Olympian “Pete” Lee.

If you went back a ways ((pre-late 1990s?) before the creation of the current format, there was a time when only the two finalists went to Regionals.  All it took was three good schools, and many very good kids would finish their year after the semifinals.  One such example was the old Brebeuf Sectional.  in the late 1980s and through the early1990s Cathedral, North Central, and Chatard were all top 15 teams.  Then throw in Brebeuf's three or four very tough kids, and the semifinals were full of great wrestling.

Getting out of sectionals is a walk in the park nowadays.
