Northern Indiana versus Southern Indiana Wrestling

Every year this topic gets touched on in the stands from different fans around the state. To me there is a definite invisible line in the heart of Indy that parents, coaches and fans like to use in their arguments as to which "part" of the state is the best.

Which part of the state is going to have the most Champions and what part of the state is going to have the most on the podium?

So divide north and south using the football classifications?  Carmel, HSE, etc. go North.  Most Indy schools are considered south so they may have an advantage.

How about this dual? (only an example there could be many other guys in certain spots)

North South

106 Reitz         Konrath

113 Crary Smith

120 Sinkovics Red

126 Micic         Lee

132 Carithers Wilson

138 Hughes Lykins

145 Forte LeCount

152 Macri Kelley

160 Hughes Corsaro

170 Osborn Stevenson

182 Jankowski Rypel

195 Johnson Moss

220 Robinson Faulkenberg

285 Streck Bernard

Its actually a flawed argument to begin with. The southern half of the state is loaded with wrestling schools in virtually every county. Not that the northern schools are any less talented its just a numbers game. I have listened to fans at Bankers from both ends of the State complain that they had better wrestlers that didn't make the State Finals than the ones wrestling because they have "better wrestling" in their area and couldn't make it out.  Maybe the way to figure this out is to hold a JV State Finals?

Just go north, south, and central Indiana. In that case central Indiana will have the most.

This year that very well may be the case, but when you look at the state population figures by region it stands to reason that it should often be the case. According to 2012 census data, the Indy metro area population was approx. 1.9 mil out of 6.5 mil in the entire state. That is roughly 29% of the population of the entire state resides in the Indy metro area.

And if you want to look further into the population stats you will find that the northern part of the state should be producing another big portion of the top wrestlers due to its high population. Of the top ten counties by population, 6 of the 10 are in the north, 3 are in the Indy metro area while only one of the top ten is in the south (Vanderburgh county/Evansville).

As I already stated, The Indy metro area population is 1.9 million. If you add the six largest counties from the north you get approx. 1.65 million. While if you add the E'ville metro area with the Jefferson/New albany/Clarksville area you only get 0.371 million. This obviouly isn't the entire story but it is a good representation of the population difference between the north, central & south parts of the state.

So, pound-for-pound as they say the south does a good job of producing talent on a per capita basis.

I guess it boils down to individual Semi-State Ticket rounds. It seems a pretty good sum of the ranked wrestlers that dont make it to the show are knocked out by other ranked wrestlers leaving lower ranked and even unranked wrestlers a way to slip in from weaker Semi-States. I would say that is the biggest argument rather than just geographically.
