I just saw on a friends status on Facebook the University of Nebraska-Ohmaha just dropped their program.  This comes after just winning their 3rd NCAA DII national championship.  >:(

I read this too.  Three-time defending national champs...titles in 6 of last 8 years.  Decided to switch to D1 in basketball and dump football and wrestling "to remain financially viable."  The AD is quoted as saying he loves wrestling, but that there would have to be a sudden infusion of money from outside sources for UNO to survive as a D1 wrestling program.

Man that sucks.  Hate to see any program go, let along one that has had great sucess in last several years.  Maybe, some of the Indiana wrestling schools should try scooping up a few of there guys while they can.  Obviously, that team has some talent on it.

The Summit League does not have wrestling and football IUPUI and IUPFW are is the Summit league University of Nebraska at Omaha is keeping hockey as a D1 sport. The Summit Lugue doesnt have hockey. So I ask why dismantle the wrestling program?

I know Coach Denney personally and there are very few people that have given as much to the sport as he has.

Chek this out: http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.themat.com%2Fsection.php%3Fsection_id%3D3%26page%3Dshowarticle%26ArticleID%3D23332&h=d8de9

Even if they do drop the teams for monetary reasons wouldn't it be in violation of Title IX?  All the teams that have been cut are mens teams so if they were in compliance with proportionality there is no way they can be now, especially with UNO dropping their football team as well.

UNO was already in trouble by not being in compliance with Title IX. Dropping football and adding soccer and golf will help them bring this closer. Dropping wrestling is still somewhat unexplainable. Coach Denney helps with fundraisers to help support his team. Coach Denney never wanted to go DI and this could be why AD Alberts decided to drop wrestling.

The Board of Regents that controls the money also controls the money at University Nebraska-Lincoln and they really do not want their beloved Huskers to have competition for players/money from the little brother in Omaha.

Does Title IX work in the opposite direction, meaning you can't have a lot more women's sports than mens? I don't really know much about it, but if that's the case it could be grounds for a request to drop it.

One of the three prongs of Title IX is proportionality, meaning the percentage of male/female students needs to match the percentage of male/female athletes.  For example if Indiana has 55% female students, then 55% of their athletes need to be female also.

Girls shouldn't wrestle!!  http://indianamat.com/messageboard/index.php/topic,15518.0.html OOPS!  Where are all the knuckle draggers that get bristly when I say that wrestling is a dieing sport that could desperately use the benefits of a female counterpart!!
