  1. How about alot of parents take their kids across the state and country to visit family this time of year...there are plenty of teams that have full rosters all season except for a few weeks during the holidays. Today we had about 6 out of 12 teams without full rosters and most were for that exact reason. Someone seems a little bitter
  2. I think its a great idea...would be nice not to miss out on 7 matches...
  3. Wow Noblitt and Ward are 132?? I would be shocked, I have no inside information, but I would be shocked.
  4. Are they all the same weight? if so which one??
  5. Triple B, loves homers!! you think Grappler100 is from Charlestown??
  6. I like watching him wrestle, but he got 4th at sectional, 6th at regional and you think last year he would have been top 4 in semi state had he not get sick at Regional? Whitley, who got 2nd in his weight class got 5th at semi state...so how was Hanes going to jump that many places? Didnt he get pinned at Regionals? 120 and 126 were meat grinders last year. Anyway I hope he does well this year...the kid has a ton of potential and hopefully worked his tail off in the off season...good luck to him!!
  7. thanks for the clarification...I thought he was a freshman last season and couldnt find him in the state book.
  8. Stevenson was a State Qualifier last season? what place did he get at semi state?
  9. Joe Just wanted to say our kids and myself appreciate the hard work put into this tourney. It was a fantastic tourney, thanks for putting something together where we get to see so much competition from indiana and surrounding state. Ty Olds Madison High School
  10. Had a good time watching the great competition, this is our 2nd year attending and it just keeps getting better. A question for debate: Indiana had 3 out of 14 champions, is this because other states are sending more studs? they are flat out better? more of our studs are playing football? Just curious as to what people think but me personally I think Indiana was represented well with those that were there and this tourney is well ran and a heck of a place for kids to test their skills and see how much they improved with the work put in over the summer.
  11. Shannon Stout wrestled 135 his freshman year. But point still taken.
  12. Not sure about most programs but speaking of the ones I have been involved with, I would say I have seen 2 or 3 wrestle in college and not one of them had a goal to wrestle in the olympics. I know many basketball players and believe it or not college was their pinnacle. So my point is, the pinnacle for most kids from a small town non wrestling juggernaut would be to wrestle in a DII or DIII and get an education paid for. Which if you have looked into how much college costs I would say $40,000+ scholarship is making money. Hell even the top notch kids I have been around consider DI their pinnacle and have no desire to wrestle international.
  13. For years and years we have constantly said "almost all the IHSAA state champs and placers wrestle freestyle" and that is very true but there is a caveat to that statement. 1. That is all that was offered since the 80s (until recent years) 2. Now kids will wrestle folkstyle except for 1 or 2 tourneys and state. That doesnt make them freestylers does it? Here are a couple of facts from our program. I know we have Triple B and 2 other coaches that push freestyle and greco and once folkstyle state ended we went from 20+ middle school and high school kids to 6-8 middle school to high school kids. We started a folkstyle camp for our "upper echelon" kids to be held on Sundays. First one on Mothers Day and we still had 16 kids show up with 6 or 7 more tell me they couldnt make it to the first one because of plans. Numbers speak for themselves. I also had similar results at the past program I coaches at. Kids disliked freestyle but did it because thats what was offered and as soon as folkstyle opportunities came about they gravitated to that.
  14. Your right its just not as relevant as folkstyle...I think most people get. When I was young freestyle was all that was offered, so we did it. But if spring/summer folkstyle was as prevalent as it is now, I would have done that. Even though freestyle has positives it does have negatives to folkstyle too, locking hands, poor bottom work, poor top work, bad leg defense, sloppy throws (anyone remember the "slip" rule in freestyle. When you were tired you would purposely slip the headlock..lol). I understand if people want something different and want to try new styles for a change but in the grand scheme if I want my kid to go to college, I would concentrate on folkstyle...btw I pose the question again that went unanswered why doesnt basketball have camps and competitions for international rules?? IMO the high school and college payoff is done with Americanized rules and whatever style high schools and colleges use is going to be want kids and parents want their kids excelling at.
  15. I like this analogy but I would take it a step further and say if my child played basketball would I choose to find an International style camp so they could play in the Olympics one day or find an American style basketball camp so they can play in college one day?? If kids want to change it up a bit and wrestle a different style, cool...but I dont hear of other sports worried about kids playing the same style of their sports from pee wee through college. Football, baseball, basketball, golf are pretty much the same format and style from little league to college. So I dont understand burnout of one particular style. Do other countries wrestle folkstyle in their offseason to get a break from freestyle/greco? I do understand burnout from the rigors of the most intense sport there is and if thats the case go play some baseball and golf during the summer.
  16. haha you call it mental abuse I call it tough love...under my umbrella-ella-ella!!!
  17. Haha...making me laugh is one of the reason I love you B Cubed!!! Every now and then you gotta put the slap down so they know not to throw medals in the trash
  18. So what would have been the problem with him throwing the medal in his bag excepting he got beat today and making sure it doesnt happen again? When he gets home, he can throw the medal away in the garbage, but me personally I think its disrespectful to anyone who exceeded their personal goals and achieved a second place medal. Your saying to that wrestler that 2nd sucks and just because his expectations are to get 1st it takes away from someone who excelled and got 2nd. Why is it a badge of honor to dismiss the achievement of 2nd place (maybe its not an achievement to him, but to many it is)? There are many ways to not except losing...running off the mat, throwing headgears, trashing medals, punching walls, not going to the podium, cussing out the official/coach/opponent, not shaking hands, not leaving the mat, etc. To me none of these shows signs of a respect for the sport. Why not wait until you get home to throw your fit? Why not stand there and respect someone elses accomplishment, and work harder to not let it happen again. The kids who lose with class dont expect to lose or accept it. They just find better ways to display their disapproval. Some throw fits for show, some show respect and commend your opponent knowing today you might have won, but you wont do it tomorrow.
  19. How bad would it look if money was able to be raised (since they are only $5 a piece) and the additional medals were given to the teams right after the IHSAA gave there medals out. I could see it now...IHSAA gives 5 or 6 medals then someone comes right in behind them and awards them 15 more medals per team. I know this would cause a bigger rift than there already is but man it would be a nice slap in the face. It would never happen but it makes me smile to think about it.
  20. Most of these examples are of already freakish athletes....what about the kids who aren't super athletes. Does playing a new sport that they have never played before, help them more than putting them in a wrestling room where they have shown signs of excelling. I dont know this answer but for me 1 other sport was okay but if I played 3 I am not sure I would have had reached the goals I set in wrestling. I was not a super athlete. I am sure we all have stories of great athletes who played 3 sports and didnt start wrestling until they were in 7th or 8th grade and were state placers and all state in other sports too. But my question is were these athletes going to excel in anything they did no matter how many sports they played? So does playing multiple sports make you a better athlete or do better athletes play multiple sports? I would like to hear from state placers who arent natural athletes if they owe there success in wrestling to picking up baseball, track or soccer for the first time as freshmen or sophmores....or from year round wrestlers who were thankful they only played one sport or two maximum. Again I dont know the answers but would be interesting to see some studies done and numbers gathered.
  21. Seymour used to host it...has it outgrown that facility?
  22. Has to be the worst call I have ever seen...1 second left and he sprawls just in case the kid does tries an ankle blast. It looked like the other wrestler was already reaching down to peel off his ankle band. I am not sure how the second official could be ok with this call??? Terrible, terrible and I dont have to be an official to see that there is no way this call should be made.
