  1. He didn't really mention that his rolling funk style would end up costing him many point and he mostly had to change his approach to wrestling to continue with Freestyle. Those other items may have been a factor, but to me without the funk to get out of tight situations Askren loses some of his best scoring chances against top guys. You can pull off some more funk in MMA and Ben has adapted to some of the BBJ moves well. Striking on the other hand is still a work in progress for him. Plus, getting married and trying to makes ends meet probably adds to the decision some too.
  2. I was still holding onto some mystery with my comments, lpd on the other hand isn't as much into tact.
  3. If its for college I'm sure it can be narrowed down easily since there is not too major DI schools in the south to choose from. Or maybe a better description would be saying he is going southwest. Possibly to visit the Spirit Rider at the House of Horrors?
  4. This is one of the toughest tournaments in the nation. Some weight classes are stacked so deep that multi-time state champs may not even finish top 8. Phillips is in by far the deepest division of the event. If he makes top 8 that is really an accomplishment. Several of the lower middle weight classes have over 130 entries. It will be a endurance contest just to finish top 8 in them. Several previews only have Tsirtsis as possible title contender. With Brooks and Boston as low top 8 hopefuls. The Open Mat preview is a little more generious to some IN guys, but that site get more inside info on our top guys than others sometimes do. Love to see a few more crack into that exclusive group. Last year IN had some nice results with Raley winning and Tsirtsis coming in 2nd.
  5. No clue on how he did in sectionals but the only one HWT from Bosse I see from the 1970's was Sam Lahanis in 1977 who took 3rd.
  6. Those Findley U. wrestlers tend to learn a few moves.
  7. Now that we have changed this thing into a recruiting thread. ;D MD does have an designated diocese district of the west side of Evansville where they get student from. Somewhere towards the east part of Evansville is the Reitz district. However, how closely they follow these parameters is something I can't answer. I would agree that the major national power are usually private schools, in some cases even have arrangements for boarding student who travel long distances. In other cases they may be from public schools in large metropolitan areas in states where the athletic boards don't worry to much about the details of whats happening.
  8. I know he has been fighting around 135, but did drop down to around 125 for his last few fights. I agree he would need to get himself together and hopefully that has happened while involved with Bellator MMA. As far as training I was hoping to see him take a hiatus from fighting after his title defense this spring and start to totally focus in on Greco. However him entering into the Bantamweight tournament (recently elimintated from) completely side tracked that one. While not to late to get started at this time I would think if he want to take a serious shot at the Olympics he doesn't have time to burn the candles at both ends (MMA and Greco) until after this summer. P.S. Drooke I figured you had at least a little bit of knowledge on Warren's recent happenings, but just though it was worth filling in the info since many other may not know about him. I've actually fished around themat.com board a few times in the last two years looking for any updates on his wrestling.
  9. He said he was coming back, but has since made a good MMA run in Bellator. However, since he didn't win a second weight class title recently he may have less promotion commitment which could give him enough time tothey back in Greco form if he starts soon. I like Betterman, but the more depth at each weight the better.
  10. They did sorta come out already: Indiana Mat 2011 Pre-Season Magazine http://www.magcloud.com/browse/issue/282571 Going to be awhile before the next update which I assume will be posted on the web.
  11. On the better side of things it looks like all 3 of our females that entered made the Pan-Am finals. Chun vs Canada (Olympic Champ) Maroulis vs Canada (Second in world and two previous Olympic medals) Pirozhkova vs Cuba (has a slightly less decorated opponent (two previous Pan-Am medals)
  12. It may be worth noting that the team was made up of many #2 and #3 guys which may slighly lesson the shock of the overall placement. Still it would give us a bigger confidence boost if our #2 and #3 Showed there were at that level. I'm not sure if some of the other countries mostly sent there top guy or not in comparison. But even so one of our #1 Betterman got a silver and Height our other #1 was put out round one. So even our #1 had some difficulty too. The world level competitions blind draw system may also hurt a few of our guys by drawing into the top guy in the first or second round which would prevent more of them from reaching the silver medal spot. And a similar situation sometimes works against reaching the bronze spot as well. Not a great excuse since they should be winning matches in a 8 man regional bracket but it does play a factor as we have seen draws work for and against us in past international events. Also worth noting this event is not an Olympic qualifier. The Pan Am Regio. Olympic Qualifier (to qualify a country at a certain weights for Olympics) will be held in Flordia in March. I believe if a country that has already qualified a certain weights does not send a participant to that event for that weight. This at least ups our chances of qualifying all our weights by that event.
  13. To bad sounded like a great pre-season event and obviously for a worthwhile cause. Hopefully this is just bad timing and they can try hosting a similar event next year.
  14. Actually Gracie fell victim to the same problem in the early days of UFC. He caught Ken Shamrock in a submission the ref missed. Royce then argued with the ref and Shamrock about it until Ken finally manned up and admitted he had tapped. But yes Neace may have been better off if he keep syncing it tighter instead of loosening up the hold.
  15. The Gold Man??? (play on Cornell's Red Man)
  16. Geocities joke. Nice. Wonder if those sites are still floating around.
  17. Most states with a solid wrestling base have established a class system in most/all individual and team sports, including wrestling. So it would make since that most team even in the top 20 would comes from class wrestling states. The reason for establishing and the effects of class sports for each sports/schools/states probably varies depending on the situation and is a different topic all together. A better way to look at the national wrestling rankings it in terms of the great "class argument" may be are all or most of the top team in the highest class in their state or are there some in other classes. The private vs public argument is a whole different set of variables when we look at the class/recruiting/program development issues. And if they are: Did individual class create situation where the other mid-size and smaller-size school have been able to flourished into talented program as a result of the class separation from the national powers. Or are the other mid/small class teams still at an average level but at least more recognition by not competing with those big school national powers. If some mid-size and small-size class teams are ranked high: Then did separating into class where more of those guys could be recognized at the state level play any factor in their growth to a national power. Or did it have little effect and many of these other factors we have mentioned were the reason they got to that level. Not sure we can clearly find those "class answer" but they are the big mystery with class sports. However, it bring me back to a series of thoughts I have made over several years when the point is made that most states have class wrestling and some do better than us. What are the factors/reason some of these areas/state have developed into wrestling powers and stayed near the top for the last 25-50 years? What has caused certain areas/states that used to be none factors to quickly rise in national success in just the last 5-8 years? What can Indiana learn from the development of both these areas/states in order to start moving up to that next level? The answers to those questions may involves a lot of investigating but could paint a more clear picture of wrestling success similar to what Coach Hull may be hunting for.
  18. In my term in the sport as a coach (be it short compared to many) I've seen talented programs arise from: Quality coach at all levels with little change in staff over the years and teach a similar curriculum. Development of a solid youth program that kids enjoy and parents trust. An administration, school, and community that at least acknowledges the efforts and accomplishments of the wrestlers. I'm sure each area has slight differences and some find ways around obsticles which allow for at least some short term results. But, areas where the things above are in place I've noticed don't just grow there program but usually have a much longer stint of success thereafter. Obviously when tradition starts to slowly creep in place and multiple generations of wrestlers stay in the community the above factors seems to fall in place much easier.
  19. Add both Perry (proven recruiter and coach) and Cooperman (one of the most technically sound wrestlers in recent years) to the staff should continue to help entice more talent from Illinois super national squads to think more about staying in state.
  20. The "he who shall not be named" qualifier.
  21. Agreed that having street shoes on the mat or walking around on the floor surface with wrestling shoes is probably a major reason for many of the skin disease being on the mat. May be one of the leading causes of certain issues spreading since you never know how clean the gym floors, hallways, and locker room floors are. In practice term trying to get kid to wait until they are on the side of the mat to put shoes on and take them off when they leave the mat could help. Obviously moping occasionally during multi-duals and tournaments is always a bonus. Some teams do have a disinfectant pad but the ones sold in wrestling mag are very pricy. I've seen other teams use the disinfectant whipes on their bodies and shoes before and/or after wrestling. The preventative foam creams also seem to help some from what I have gathered before as far as keeping your skin clear of these issue. But obviously not always fixing the shoe issue. I know they do make new wrestling shoe covers that you can put on to make the transition so you don't have to keep taking your shoes off between matches. Price obviously a factor for some people there.
  22. Bump one down to 138 and that somewhat fixes both issues.
  23. Depends on if we can find a app designer and if that designer can work between different formats. My sugguestion was to also make a laptop version so those without tables could just buy many laptops and work it through that. It's kind of been put on the backburner since the first designer fell through on us.
  24. Like I said our head coach has a prototype of a very extensive wrestling app in a mock form. It has most if not all of the items a coach would like to see, very user friendly, and even allows you to do matside scoring (which goes into the team scores and team/individual stats). We just need to find the app writer that can translate it into that form, work out a few of the kinks, and isn't trying to charge a ton of money (don't need to get rich but don't want to go in the hole either). If you happen to know someone like that let us know and the app may be on the market in a matter of months.
  25. They do have a few stat programs that can be downloaded as apps, but to me they seem to be lacking some elements I'd like to see. Our head coach actually designed the skeleton form of a a great wrestling stat app for the iPad/iPhone which would even allow you to input data as the match is happening and it automatically totaled the individual score, team score, and all the stats. However, it was put on the back-burner when the designer he put to work on it couldn't figure out how to complete a few of the details through the Apple rules so the compiled stat data could be possible exported out of the iPad/iPhone file. So if anyone happens to know a great app designer that may be able to fix this issue we may have one of the better wrestling stat apps on the market.
