  1. Good point, yes stalling is allowed in many sports. But it is not supposed to be allowed in Wrestling. And it is very subjective on exactly what is & isn't stalling.

Exactly.  Rules ideally should be objective.  Therefore, folkstyle wrestling needs to find a way to eliminate/reduce the subjectivity of the stalling call.  Good luck  :)

  2. A football team up 3 touchdowns goes into a prevent defense, and runs the ball to milk the clock when on offense.

A boxer/MMA fighter is clearly ahead on the judges scorecards dials it back in the later rounds of a fight.

A soccer team up 2 goals drops an extra player onto the defensive side of the field and plays keep away.

A basketball team will use more shot clock to lengthen their own possessions, thus limiting their opponents.

Stalling is essentially an acceptable "tactic" in other sports. Why not wrestling (not my personal opinion, just trying to spur conversation)?  The easy answer for stalling on the mat is to put them on their feet.

  3. That match was one of the reasons I don't like riding time much.  No offense to Hughes, he is and incredibly tough rider with those legs.  But I never got the sense that he was looking to turn the guy.  Just rode him for he sake of riding him.  You see that a lot in college.  Once they secure the riding time point they tend to open up a bit more.  Not a real exciting match to say the least.  But, for a freshman to ride college kids like that is impressive.

Which match, Rutgers or Illinois?  Against Martinez, I think it was more self preservation than anything else! Martinez was putting on a take down clinic in the first period. But I agree with your point.

Drew is an amazing kid and wrestler. IMO he's at an all-american level as a top wrestler, but a red shirt year really would have helped him improve on his feet. I think Drew is well on his way to becoming the face of the MSU program.

  4. Sectionals should rotate between all the schools at it! Unfair home advantage to the host. Perfect example, Plymouth would probably not have won sectionals if it was not in front of their home crowd. Kids get excited about wrestling in their backyard.

Be careful what you ask for! Some schools/administrations shouldn't have the responsibility of hosting anything.

  5. Calumet is not the only inner-city sectional in the state (or the Region for that matter) that has to deal with scratches and changes the morning of the tournament.  Everyone else uses TrackWrestling without a problem.  Calumet, for whatever reason, chooses to use paper bout cards instead.  A few years ago, Calumet changed their name to "Calumet New Tech High School".  They implemented one-to-one student laptops and an alternative learning and teaching style which was technology based.  That, my friends, is called irony.

To say the Calumet crew has experience which is "unmatched" is also a stretch.  Merrillville ran a semi-state (4x larger than a regional) for 30+ years like clockwork.  It would still be there if not for a disgruntled fire marshal.  Lake Central runs a great event every December at their place called the Harvest Classic.  There are other schools in the Region that know how to run a tournament and use the most current technology (TrackWrestling) to do so.

Also, from a fan's perspective, I agree the extra elbow room is nice at Calumet.  However, from most seats you can only see one side of the scoreboard, and at most, two sides.  This can make it difficult for fans trying to follow scoring on 3 mats.  There are also sight line issues where the mat closest to you is partially blocked when you're sitting in the upper bleachers.  In addition, parking at Calumet is also a nightmare.

And ticked off fans in the upper deck who only saw half the mats for the first two rounds.  Although it felt like the Gestapo at times, Merrillville did run a top notch tournament. In SOME respects I miss the semi state being there.

  6. Has classed sports in Indiana increased the overall participation numbers?  It has increased the number of teams being recognized as champions, but are the numbers of participants actually up statewide? Maybe they are, I have no idea.  But I think the issue is more societal/generational than just simply more classes, JV tournaments, and the "middle class."  Kids have more options than they ever have, and a lot of them view sports as purely recreational.

Last I recall, wrestling is hard.

  7. Well clearly you didn't go to college because if you did, you could read and would have concluded that 20 year old me was busy chasing females and earning a degree, having little interest in a wrestling message board. Vito was around my current age in 2000, around 37, the age where we have nothing to do but make false accusations over the computer. There's your explanation detective, go back to being a computer BA.

    Sad, but true!

  8. Vito, did you just like your own post (as sportsfangms) that Vito's head is going to get bigger? Having a conversation with yourself is one thing, but liking your alter ego's posts is a new level.

    sportsfangms = vito pepperelli

For lack of a better term, you're an idiot.  Plenty of people on this board and the Region know who he and I are.

  9.

Yes, they said this when our kids was in Elementary Champions, Middle School Champions, Youth National Wrestling Champions and All-Americans . Goals Fellas , GOALS ! Our kids have been Goal Crushers back then and they're going to Crush your way of thinking of them . You may not see yet, maybe your new to Indiana Wrestling, I don't know. I'd would wake up and embrace this #newera of wrestling that's going to take Indiana by storm. Their Time is Coming , like it or not . ! IT'S COMING !

Throw in a couple improper uses of the word "brother," remind me to eat my vitamins and I would swear I was listening to Hulk Hogan.

I also like how you're stepping up your game with the increased usage of CAPS in addition to your #hashtag usage. Those are GOALS I can believe in, Brother,

    #hashtagsnevergetold

  10. You're really reaching when you compare public safety to a kid competing in a sporting event. Who gives a crap if portage benefits from a transfer. I'll spare the time of listing the numerous kids who transferred in a way that benefitted the new team, but needless to say CP is one of those teams, as has been mentioned. You acknowledge that enforcement of this rule is arbitrary...so, why is that? It's stupid and puts one team's sour grapes ahead of KIDS playing a sport. Did these kids commit a crime, or engage in unsavory behavior? Nope. They moved. How outrageous

Apparently someone gives a crap because right or wrong, they're not eligible.  The Moran's aren't the first transfers that were denied or held up, and they won't be the last.  Contact the Principal and AD at your local HS and start lobbying for the rule to be changed. Until that happens this will always be an issue.

  11. The problem is the rule is only applicable a portion of the time.  Almost a certainty this decision lied SOLELY in the hands of CP's AD.

That's a great point.  The only thing I would say different is that ideally any rule should be applicable ALL OF THE TIME.  Therefore, who is more to "blame":

    A.  The AD's across the state who turn a blind eye to shady transfers?

    B.  The AD's who hold up a transfer because they believe the spirit of the rule was violated?

Without focusing on the Moran case, if you think rules always have to be followed the answer is B.  If you think kids and parents should operate under a fully open transfer system, than the answer is A.  Unfortunately, I don't think it's that simple.

  12. What the heck do you know about why they transferred Vito?  Are you the smartest man in the world????  Do you have insight the rest of us don't??  You seem to be awfully sensitive to the topic!

Don't get your bloomers in a bunch, it's a discussion forum. If you don't like what I have to say, don't read it. The last thing I am is a CP supporter.  I'm just calling it the way I see it.  I have not nor will you ever hear me say a negative word about Leroy Vega.  My issue is with the spirit of the transfer rule.  You can call me old school (call me whatever you want actually, I could care less), but I believe rules are meant to be followed.  Simple as that. If you don't like the rules go through the proper channels to have them changed.

  13. When you say things like an administration is 'drawing a line in the sand', and it somehow supercedes KIDS participating in a sport they love and have worked at for nearly their entire lives...it sounds petty and misguided to say the least. Say it aloud without cringing, I dare you

It also sounds "petty and misguided" to transfer to another school because the former coach retired and kids (i.e. parents) allegedly scurried from the program like rats from a sinking ship. Coincidentally, the new school just happens to magically have a state ranked wrestling team - how convenient. Rules are rules, and yes sometimes they "supersede" personal needs. I want to be able to drive as fast as I want on I65 but the rules say I can't. Why? Because those are the rules. I don't have to like the rules, but I also recognize I may get punished if I don't.

I do feel sympathy for the Moran's in the sense they are getting punished when kids at other schools are not; sometimes in situations that rumor has it are far more egregious. Youth sports stopped being "about the kids" a long time ago - probably about the time we let adults start making the rules!

  14. You're absolutely right. Extra-curricular participation is a privilege, not a right. However, I don't see anybody governing a student's right to transfer for participation in the robotics club, the marching band, student government, or any other non-athletic extra-curricular activity, and transfers of those natures happen as well. Also, right or wrong, if our legislature decided to enact laws permitting open enrollment, the IHSAA rules should be similarly changed. Regardless, the power should not be in the hands of the coach, administrator or school system that is bitter about a student's departure from their district. Again, apples and oranges. The IHSAA governs athletics.  Robotics, Band, etc.  have their own governing bodies and they make the rules.  As they say, he who has the gold makes the rules.  Accepting open enrollment students  is still  a local school corporation decision, not at the state level (yet, anyway).

And to simply say, "don't participate," is short sighted. Many athletes rely on their athletic pursuits as much as their academics in making it to college and/or in pursuing their own path after high school. I actually hope that's not true.  What's the percentage of HS athletes who participate in college athletics?  5% or less?  How many receive an athletic scholarship?  Less than 1%?

  15. I am not making statements as to the Morans case specifically, because I, like 99% of the people on this message board, do not know all the facts, have not spoken to any of the involved parties, and have not been present to hear the evidence, hearing, or appeal process. From what I do know, I believe the brothers should be eligible to compete and that this was a decision made by the parents in the best interest of their children and the family as a whole. These two sentences are a contradiction.

Here's a link to an article from 2010, which addresses the implementation of the case review panel and eligibility rules as the pertain to open enrollment. It's an interesting read. However, a quick overview the case review panel rulings shows that it has been less successful than hoped by Tony Bennett, in that it upholds the decision of the IHSAA a vast majority of the time. I guess that's why there's always the opportunity to appeal to state court as well. Define success. Upholding decisions doesn't define success or failure. That's like blaming a district attorney for having a 95% conviction rate.

Thank you for the post, it was a good read.  I have to get off this forum for the day, it's given me a headache!

  16. I'm not sure i understand so everyone that leaves a trash job just doesn't work anymore? That doesn't seem right. indianamat has been great

Clearly you didn't get the sarcasm, so I'll stop.

As for jobs in the adult world and high school sports, I think you're comparing apples and oranges.  Extra curricular participation is a privilege not a right; schools are educational institutions first and foremost.

Whether you like the eligibility policies of the IHSAA or not, those are the rules.  If you don't like the rules, don't participate or contact your local Principal/AD and lobby for them to be changed.

  17. Or if you don't like a job you should just stay there and be unhappy Nah, just quit your job and let someone us take care of your problems.

I like this post it brings traffic to the site. It may be the same 5 guys posting but at least it's a hot topic You're welcome.

Let's make America and Indianamat great again!
