  1. Thanks for the clarification. We were all wondering about that.
  2. I think this is a great "rant" Y2. You've said it perfectly...support your teammates. I'd like to add one thing to that. I recently had a kid tell me that a certain wrestler I asked about wasn't any good because he wasn't on varsity at his school. He looked at me strange when I laughed and said that doesn't mean he's not any good. I think about all the JV kids at schools like MD, Mish, Cath,Reitz, PM...I think you get the picture...at a LOT of other schools these kids would be varsity (and would be considered the best wrestlers on those teams in some instances). PLUS, those "non-varsity" kids are just as important as the varsity kids, they're in the wrestling room helping the varsity kid get better, they're there to fill in if the starter gets hurt (then graciously step down when the starter returns), they do all the work but get none of the glory. So, I say support ALL of your teammates. I think the old saying "there is no I in TEAM" is so true.
  3. Talk about a backbreaker. If Lovelace can pull that out, Reitz might have been able to make a run. Actually, there was only.1 seconds left on the clock...it was sweet!
  4. He seemed to do well in Oakville, so I'd say any saga that might have been rumored has ended... Good luck to both teams...should be a good match-up as usual...it's always fun when the MD & Reitz fans come together!
  5. I just voted...wrestling @ 56% and basketball @ 28%
  6. When the Tech Fall was originally established it was worth 6 pts and then later it was changed to being worth 5 pts. Does anyone remember this or the reasoning for a) the original establishment of the 6 pts and the reasoning that was given to change it to 5 pts? Just wondering.
  7. 2-2-2...I think they should stay @ 6 minutes. Does anyone know the real reason consolations were shortened to 5 min? I've always wondered that.
  8. I think headgears should be worn as much as possible. Cauliflower ear is nothing to laugh at. My son's wrestling coach requires it for live wrestling at practice.
  9. I think the way he described it in an earlier post was that more weight is given to the team that has more wins against top 20 teams. I could be wrong, but that's the way I understood it. Until I read through the posts I was wondering the same thing.
  10. I used to have the message board bookmarked, but since you started putting all the great info in the main page, I always visit the main page first. BTW, great job with the rankings/articles...keep it coming!
  11. I think this year (or maybe the past few years) I'd have to say Merrillville, but historically, I think I've got to give the nod to Evansville.
  12. I love Friday night matches. Sometimes this is where the best action takes place. The kids are so fired up, the crowd is soooo ready, and there are ALWAYS upsets. I'm getting chills already...Friday night action rocks!
  13. Da da da da...the final countdown. Love it !
  14. I tend to be less affectionate than other mothers, especially when I'm matside trying to help "coach" my kid (which I think my teenager appreciates most of the time...lol)...however...sometimes kids just need a hug...win or lose. If the coach doesn't mind giving a hug, and the kid doesn't mind receiving one (right after a loss), then what the heck...hug away
  15. Well, you don't need to worry about it...I just got done watching it and it's only the finals and NOT an official IHSAA copy. Although whoever videotaped it did a heck of a job. It did make me think A LOT about how much people have talked about MD's "young" look. In 2001 MD had a large # of sophomores, and even a freshman Blake Maurer, and they looked pretty darn good. There was an official IHSAA copy of the 1999 Team State floating around here that I was trying to grab, but I guess they got it back before I could get to it.
  16. Someone brought in a copy of 2001 IN Team State to have it converted to DVD...made myself a copy too. I love it when work brings me wrestling videos...MD/PHS wrestling right now...I keep looking for myself in the stands...ah memories...
  17. I think there are always going to be debates about Team State. Should it be done post season? Should coaches sub in back-ups to keep the "starters" healthy? Should it be classed? Personally, I really enjoy Team State itself, but I will agree that the qualifiers I've been to have typically been yawners. I think that Y2 was correct when he said that most of the qualifiers are decided long before the actual event. Most people know the top teams in their areas, and it's usually pretty simple to pick out the "best." That being said.... Every wrestler who has made it to the State Tournament series has done so by wrestling matches, any of which could have resulted in an injury. There is always that possibility (even practicing in the wrestling room there is the possiblity of an injury that can knock you out for the season). To say that a wreslter should "sit out" of a match that is "meaningless" is a little presumptuous. The decision to/not to wrestle must be left up to the individual wrestler and his coach. My picks for this year: Mish, MD, CP, Cath (top 4 for me)...Mish is still on top as far as I can see. Regardless of what happens...Good Luck to all the teams busting their butts to make it!
  18. I agree. A Tech. Fall should not be weighted the same as a Pin. The whole objective of wrestling is to work for the pin. If you get the fall, you get 6...if not...you don't. I think it's just that simple. There are some kids that always end up with tech. falls because they're good at takedowns and never really work for the pin. Being good at takedowns is commendable, but the ojective of wrestling is not to "takedown, let up, takedown, let up, etc."...it's to get the fall. Keep the points the way they are.
  19. I just knew someone was going to say something like that gutter brain!!! LOL!!
  20. Quote: On the contrary, freestyle and folkstyle are fairly similar as far as the wrestling aspect. In the neutral position, the styles are pretty similar. The difference is in the mat wrestling and exposures. Folkstyle, you're pretty much allowed to ride a guy out for a period without necessarily trying to score. Freestyle, when they realize it's become a stalemate. They put you back on your feet. The other perceived differences is really from the rule changes in freestyle the past 5 years or so. OK, I should clarify, that it is a lot of the rule changes over the last 5 years (in freestyle) that I'm not big on (which does indeed make folkstyle & freestyle seem a lot different). I like mat wrestling, not necessarily "riding", but when two guys are down on the mat wrestling aggressively trying to put in various moves it can be really intense...those are my favorite kinds of matches, and you just don't get that with freestyle.
  21. As soon as they show interest. My son started wrestling at 4. Most school club/feeder programs I think field kids on the team at 5, but I see kids younger than that in the wrestling room sometimes. The sooner you get them started, the sooner you begin building a love of the sport. BUT BE CAREFUL...if you push kids too much at a young age you can really burn them out.
  22. I have a few friends who coach/have coached their sons. What I seem to hear from them is that it's OK until about 6th grade, and then after that it gets really tricky. I'd love to hear what some of the coach dads have to say about this topic.
  23. Wrestlers that don't quit are tough! Agreed...all wrestlers are tough (you've got to be to survive in this sport). There are tough kids who don't make it out of regionals. That's what makes wrestling so exciting...ANYTHING can happen, all it takes is one small misstep.
