DLane reacted to Y2CJ41 in Article: #WrestlingWednesday: Alara Boyd Aiming for Gold
    By JEREMY HINES
    Thehines7@gmail.com

Alara Boyd firmly believes that she can compete with any female wrestler in the world. That confidence has Boyd, a sophomore at Yorktown High School, setting her sights on winning a gold medal at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

“I for sure feel I’m there, skill-wise, with anyone in the world,” Boyd said. “I want to be a world champion. But more than that, I want to win the Olympics in 2020. I know what I have to do to get there. I have to keep working. I have to keep practicing and I have to keep improving.”

The idea of Boyd wrestling in the Olympics is not a far-fetched one by any means. Boyd recently earned a bronze medal at the World Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia. Her lone loss came at the hands of Japanese gold medalist Atena Kodama, who tech-falled her opponent in the gold medal match.

“I took a few shots I shouldn’t have taken against Japan,” Boyd said. “They put me on the shot clock and I started to get a little anxious. That really hurt me.”

Boyd bounced back to win the bronze medal, defeating Canada’s Kirti Saxena 8-1.

“My family and friends were super excited for me,” Boyd said. “When I got back they were all telling me how proud they were of me. I thought I wrestled well, but I want to win the world championships next time.”

Boyd is a first-year cadet. She has two more years in the division.

Boyd began wrestling when she was 4-years-old. She fell in love with the sport right off. Her dad, Jimmy Boyd, was her coach.

As with most female wrestlers in Indiana, the majority of Boyd’s opponents are boys. Her practice partners are all seasoned veterans. Yorktown’s Christian Hunt, Josh Stephenson and Alex Barr all take turns wrestling Boyd at practice.

Boyd has had success against the guys. Last year, as a freshman, she posted a winning record for the Tigers. She wrestled at 132, 138 and even 145 in some meets.

In 2015 Boyd won the ISWA Freestyle and Greco Roman state championships, wrestling against a field of all male competitors.

“Alara is very, very physical, even by the boys’ standard,” Yorktown assistant coach Kenny O’Brien said. “She’s very strong. She’s fantastic from an underhook. Her physicality is overwhelming at times. She’s extremely good on top in freestyle and she has one of the best leg laces in the world.”

O’Brien also attributes some of Boyd’s success to her fight. It doesn’t matter who is in front of her, she will fight for the victory.

“Her toughness and her fight are her best attributes,” O’Brien said. “If a girl or a guy hits her, she’s hitting back. She doesn’t back down from anyone. She’ll never back down from anyone. She’ll get right in their face and hit them back if they mess with her.”

Boyd’s trip to Tblisi, Georgia was her first endeavor outside of the United States.

“Things were a lot different there,” she said. “The people were overall pretty friendly. They live a lot differently than we do here. They don’t have all the luxuries we have, but it was neat to experience their culture. You see what they have went through, and you see all of the hard working people over there. It was neat to experience.”

Boyd is currently undecided on whether she will wrestle for Yorktown during the high school season or concentrate more on training for the Olympics. She said she will most likely still wrestle for the school.

In addition to be an Olympic hopeful, Boyd also wants to wrestle in college. Although she’s undecided on what she wants to study. Currently she’s leaning toward dentistry.

Most paid, so if they don't come I'll thank them for the donation to IndianaMat and Indiana wrestling. I'm sure the Gorillas at Scholastic Duals will thank them for a very cheap trip again.

From a parent who is actually in the middle of all of this, here is our experiences.
NHSCA - After Ty's matches, we had numerous coaches come introduce themselves and ask for some information.  This included 2 D1 coaches, 1 D2 coach and honestly several who I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know.  One of those actually stepped into our corner and attempted to argue a call during one of our matches.  I'll remain nameless, as that is probably some type of violation. JazzTown - A D1 coach contacted Snyder about his interest in Ty and relayed some information. Camps - We have attended camps with several D1 Big10 coaches in attendance, there is mutual interest that we'll explore this fall. Junior National Freestyle Duals - Zero interest... with all the talk about this and that with freestyle, Ty went 7-1 as a Cadet wrestling in the Junior Duals last year and didn't get a sniff.  His loss was a 14-8 decision to Intermat's #11.  It's funny that those who claim all the college coaches in attendance at this event couldn't get a kid sniffed that was ranked 6th in the country by Flowrestling at the time.  I guess the college coaches were more concerned about the teams in the Gold bracket than Indiana's team OR it's just a lot of talk.  JazzTown was a much bigger hit for us on a fraction of the budget last year. My lesson learned... I can attend 4-5 national events plus camps and get more recognition on the same budget it takes to attend Fargo and/or Cadet/Junior Nationals.  The trip fees are ridiculous, we travel much cheaper.  If you have success at these national tournaments, results will speak for themselves.

    Gentleman,

As a former Team Leader and Coach of the Junior Duals Team all I ever wanted to was for our kids (Indiana Kids) was to get matches and improve their abilities, somewhere along the way that seems to have gotten lost in what the ISWA stands for. It has been exciting to see the growth of Indiana Wrestling, I remember the days where we would have a couple of kids who could compete on a national level to the point we are at now where we have multiple kids who can compete on a National and International level. The reason this is happening is because there are more opportunity for kids to wrestle and the Coaches are taking full advantage of those opportunities and going to places like Disney or Tennessee or Iowa or Wabash. In my time working with the ISWA I never tried to take a kid away from a Team event like Disney and that is because those events are special to the growth of the kid and the Team. Now I will say I tried to get kids from Fargo because at the duals (just like at Disney) you are guaranteed matches and a great deal of kids felt like Fargo was the place to go to get noticed when in fact those kids were not ready to compete at that level.
I go on this message boards and see all the infighting and I get excited and the reason why is because so many people care about this sport their kids and programs. I encourage each and every one of you to stay the path and do what is best for your kids and programs because at the end of the day it is your kids who will get better along with your individual programs. As for the duals yes there needs to be some tweaks on the team selection process but at the end of the day it is wrestling and we need to get as many kids the opportunity to be wrestling as we can. The "elite" know were to go and get the matches they feel help them the most, isn't that how they got "elite" in the first place. If they don't we have a whole bunch of awesome Coaches in the state that are willing to help them I'm sure.

Just to clear the air.....I am Danny Lane screen name DLane. I lived in Avon, IN for about 10 years where my boys wrestled for Avon and Contenders. I currently live in Brandon, FL, where my oldest currently wrestles. So that everyone knows, I am NOT Big Dan Teague who's avator once said he was from Seffner, FL (which is the town north of Brandon) LOL

But on a side note is the ISWA has its act together way better then FAWA or FL AAU.

Nathan Walton didn't want to make 170
Blake Mulkey and Brayton Lee wanted to be on the same team as their teammates(Walton, McCormick, and Mills before injury).
Brendan Black wanted to be with his teammate Triana

On top of that Walton, Lee, and Black all enjoyed their time as Gorillas last year. They also don't mind paying less and getting a lot more gear on top of that.

I guess when you treat people right they want to come back, it's what happens when you put out a superior product.

I had some severe back spasms going from my lower back all the way up to my neck. The spasms caused very intense pain and my back and neck "locked up". I owed it to the both Robbie Smith and Adam Coon to take myself out of the match. They have worked most of their lives to make the Olympic Team and I was not any where near being able to be my best.

The medical staff checked me for cardiac and stroke issues and they were right on top of it. When they were sure it wasn't something life threatening they took me to the training room. When the Iowa Wrestling Trainer examines you and says "Oh, you have a big problem here" you know something is wrong.

Once it was determined that I was going to live, my fellow referees made remarks such as "He couldn't have a heart attack, that is anatomically impossible. He doesn't have a heart." "We took a poll to see who was going to give you CPR and we stopped when were 0 for 7."  Which is exactly the kind of thing I would have said.

I'm ok now but will make an appointment with my Doctor very soon.

    Thanks for the concern.

I'm not sure where to begin when talking about this event. When I started pursing this event over a year ago I knew about the prestige of it. When I started getting the details I was even more impressed...BUT after actually experiencing it...I'm at a loss for words. Even though we came up short on the team score I was still grinning ear to ear from everything going on. This event was first class from the beginning, the kids got a boat load of gear on top of being treated like royalty. We had an awesome recognition banquet with great speakers on Friday night. Saturday after a buffet breakfast we went on a tour of Pittsburgh that included lunch on the river while touring on a boat.

Then came the wrestling! What an electric and exciting atmosphere to wrestle in. You have 3000 fans there watching you wrestle and to add a little sugar to it we were the enemy in hostile territory. The kid's wrestled their BUTTS off and I give them a ton of credit. We fought, we battled, we got to wrestle on the biggest stage possible. Guys from Flo are raving about our guys, the PWC Committee members are talking about all our kids about how great they are. I'm like a proud poppa right now. Special shout outs to Owen Doster and Drew Hughes who stepped up and wrestled twice tonight. Big props to both Cael McCormick and Nick Fox who stepped up to battle up a weight class AND on super short notice. Thanks to all our parents and coaches who got their kids here and committed to this event on Easter weekend. Thanks to Coach P, Coach Vega, and Coach Cooper for helping out while I handled the organization of the event.

This was a great event for Indiana wrestling and I can tell you the coolest part...they are telling me to start getting ready to bring another team back soon!

Nice to live in a place where wrestling gets top billing. Big things happening at the Avon Wrestling Club, Brownsburg Wrestling Club, Plainfield Wrestling Club, Tri-West Wrestling Club, Cascade Wrestling Club, Contenders Wrestling Academy, and Red Cobra Wrestling Academy (all within 10 miles). These kids have quality rooms to workout in every night. They are putting in the work and it is paying off.

Well I am back on the boycott freestyle state bandwagon after just wasting $40 on the Iron Eagle Columbia City tournament.  I went to sign up for Penn's freestyle tournament on March 26th, but could not because they moved it to April 30th.  FYI there are no other freestyle tournaments offered on the weekend of March 26th in Indiana.  So we are giving 7 weekends to wrestle in 2 freestyle tournaments, but only 6 weekends offer tournaments.  Now throw in 3 very expensive tournaments that are all supported by ISWA(National middle school duals, Heartland Duals, and USA Nationals) and you are down to 3 weekends.  Out of those weekends one is Ohio TOC which is probably a better tournament then USA Nationals and Viper Pit Dual(Indiana is the defending champion).  That leaves us with 1 weekend(Iron eagle), which I will just skip instead of paying for 2 nights of hotels and food.  Thanks again ISWA.

No am I not taking it wrong, cause i knew people would ask.... But No, considering we (Brandon) wrestle tons of the 3A, 1A kids all season. Trey and alot of the Brandon wrestlers have beaten alot of the another State Champs and placers throuh the year. I know it was posted earlier, but Trey did beat James Monos in the semi finals. Monos attened the IHOP this year and placed higher then alot of IHSAA state placers, SQ and IN ranked guys.

And my question would be wonder if Mark Hall (MN), Alex Marinelli (OH), Jake Tucker (IL) and alot of other great wrestlers, think that are not "TRUE" state champs because they are in classed system. But no matter if its classed or non classed you still cant take the title of High School State Champ from them.
