  1. Jimtown's Gimson bros. - They took that step from very good to great between their freshman and sophomore seasons.

LaVille's Alex Cartwright - JV as a freshman to being one questionable call away from being a state finalist as a sophomore.

Wawasee's Program - Program has done a 180.  Kids wrestle with passion.  Coaches doing a great job.

Rennsy Central's Eli Hickman - Freshman semi state champ.  No one outside of Jasper Co. would have predicted it.

Chesterton's Lucas Davison - Ticket rounder last year.  State title contender this year.

  2. Hungus:Maybe we're talking semantics, but isn't the IHSAA "involved" in the uneven application of their own rules, simply because they set up the system of reporting of violations...ie. The schools contesting portion of the process. Obviously they know the end result will be some people getting investigated and some not, for the exact same violations.

I suppose in the same way the judicial system is involved trying to keep you from breaking the speed limit.

Unless law enforcement contests that you were breaking the speed limit, you can break the law as often and as severely as you want.

Yet I can get ticketed and fined for the exact same violation.  I guess I would not blame the judicial system for my ticket.

Can the system be gamed? sure.  But the IHSAA can't investigate each and every one of the thousands of transfers that occur each year.

  3. So the trick is not to get the IHSAA involved then. The lesson here is not to piss off the departing school admin, then the IHSAA transfer rules really don't apply.   I don't think we need to be "privy to all the details", we just need to understand how the system really works.

    That is the system.

  4. Correct, we don't know the details but the perception looks bad.    Maybe there should be some transparency by the IHSAA.    I'm also  not  aware   any  situations or details where a kid transferred to a new school during the wrestling season after being kicked off   the   previous   team for disciplinary reasons.    Im glad nothing like that happened, because that would look very irregular and hypocritical.

If both schools sign off, the IHSAA does not get involved.  If they are not involved then they are not being irregular nor hypocritical.

  5. Karl Hungus: You're probably right, but that "signing off" part, seems to be a major flaw in the system.  Why should the Morans be punished, because their prior school contests, whereas Goehrings and Demiens in another part of the state remain eligible, because their respective schools don't, when the rule violated is exactly the same?  Why doesn't the IHSAA determine each case on its own merits, and not leave it up to the schools discretion?  Justice should be fair by definition, and meted out equally.  As long as individual schools have a say in it, it can't be equal treatment to each athlete, because schools will differ in their approach.  The IHSAA should objectively look at each situation and rule independently. Shouldn't they?  Am I missing something?  If so, please set me straight!

It really sickens me to know Jonathon Moran lost something he can never get back, his senior season, through no fault of his own.  As coaches, parents and fans we get so tired of seeing kids quit sports late in their careers, for whatever reason, because we know from experience, what a special time of life high school is.  We try hard to keep kids involved...and yet here is a passionate, hard-working kid who was denied the opportunity to continue to pursue his passion.  If he wasn't as passionate and hard-working, he probably would not have achieved as much success, so...his school would have been much less likely to contest the transfer.  Which is yet another reason it shouldn't be left to the school's discretion.  Wouldn't we find it farcical to do the same thing with regard to a high academic achiever?  Example: A very gifted science student wishes to transfer to a neighboring school, because it has a better Science Department and a well respected Engineering Club.  Would anybody try to stop that academic transfer?

I thought the IHSAA did review the Moran case on its own merits in the appeal process?  Twice.

The IHSAA is a governing body run by the schools.  If two member schools sign off, the IHSAA will not get involved, if one does not sign off, then they become involved.

Trying to compare the Moran's case to other transfer situations puts you on a slippery slope because we laymen and laywomen are not privy to all the details.  On the surface, I agree it looks unfair for some kids to be able to wrestle and other not.  But I honestly don't think the IHSAA is sticking to some kids on purpose and giving others a free pass.

  6. NO OTHER WAY I WOULD LIKE IT TO BE..... I was just teasing him.... Don't take it to heart KarlHungus! As ontherise219 does a FANTASTIC JOB and I appreciate everything he does for the love of the sport of wrestling. Keep up the good work and THANK YOU!

Just trying to get my karma back for underestimating the lil bombers last week

  7. If the host state can't even put together all their best on one team, then why would other states waste the effort and travel here with their own best?  We are left with an average regional tournament instead of the premier event it used to be. (Even when it was in Delaware with their screen door factories)

Is that what Michigan, Pennsylvania, Iowa, etc are saying?  Then the answer is to only allow 2 schools per state and magically all the states will come.  Problem solved.  Kick the boogie man out.

Limit the Event to one to two teams per state if thats what you want....Thats what Cadet and Junior Duals does. However this isn't that event...it's a regional level all star dual where you field a team and go there is no need for there to be state affiliation nor do the kids on your team have to even live in your state.

Nor be in high school, it appears Ohio had some 8th graders

  8. Mattyb - quite a few of us had the opportunity to experience Kingsport and Heartland this month. I'd not say Kingsport was suffering. The interesting thing about the two were that there were few groups that overlapped other than PA, IL & IN. The geographical and affiliation differences are probably more at play than anything else.

The odd thing about about this discussion is no one is voicing what seems to be the clear issue regarding choice and value other than Joe C. Is it possible to inquire what the kids' and parents' decision points were? This is probably only the case if offered/earned a spot on Gold/Silver but took the dark horse option...  Kids like the swag now. The elementary kids and parents were really pleased with JMILL & Lauren's gear for Heartland esp for the rate charged. So, the value and coolness factors played a role in customer satisfaction.

Has anyone engaged a chamber of commerce/tourism office to help the event like visitkingsport.com or the group from Council Bluffs. That type of partnership can't hurt either....

Good point with the chamber of commerce but they need to  get better  teams first.

  9. I guess my only question would be how important is this event?  I always thought it was a big time, big deal event.  If that is the case, then winning absolutely matters, and we should want our top teams out there.  If the event isn't all that important then I guess it really wouldn't matter.  I honestly don't know the answer to this, could someone fill me in on the status of this event in terms of importance?

This event has devolved to become a decent regional dual.  Absolutely not a big time, big deal event.  I think some folks believe it is still a big event but it clearly isn't.  Joe posted that only 6 states are represented. That much alone should tell you what you need to know.
