  1. Hamilton County I only found two 2x state champs... Mitch Sliga - Fishers (3rd/3rd/1st/1st) + 5x Fargo National Champ and Kurt Geib - Carmel (1970's 1st/1st) Carmel has had several 1x state champs. No other school in the county has had a champ.
  2. Here's an update from the good folks running this event series... IHSGW Girls State Update
  3. Oh boy, I get a chance to rant about something You make it sound like getting results to the media (I'm gonna focus on newspapers) as such an easy process. When I was a head coach up until 2 years ago, I hated the newspapers. My AD required the coaches to send our results, and if we didn't we would hear about it. [side Note: Posting on IndianaMat was not required.] A new publication that I had never heard of sent my AD an email to badmouth me about how all of their readers (~50) were "demanding" wrestling results. That was a fun meeting with my AD. I understand that newspapers are struggling in this digital age. But if I didn't basically write the article for them, then no details would be published. One paper that I had sent multiple very detailed results to never printed a word of any of them. So I stopped sending them info, but then my AD was contacted that I didn't send results for a tournament. Another fun meeting with my AD. Wrestling coaches want to get their wrestlers recognized. Newspapers need information to publish. Somewhere in between there is something missing that is frustrating for coaches and shows the downfall of print media.
  4. Or the coach could plan ahead and not use up all her weigh in points. Then no waiver is needed.
  5. From the information I've seen, the girls have to be part of an IHSAA high school team and it would count as 2 weigh-in points. So I wouldn't think it would need a waiver as it would be considered part of their high school schedule. Here are a couple of links with more information: http://ihsgw.com/ IHSWCA Page
  6. The club rep listed on the website doesn't have to be the one who attends the meeting. Even before the IHPO started, usually less than half of the clubs had a rep at the annual meeting. An annual meeting is a formality that all organizations are required to have.
  7. It has been very good. Realistically, only club reps and board members have to choose which one to attend. It doesn't affect most people. warsawwrestling made it seem that it was a conspiracy by the ISWA to try to hurt your tournament.
  8. I just caught you lying (but it's just a technicality) Honestly, if I had to choose which to attend, I would choose the IHPO. However, I won't get the chance for many years.
  9. Hard to believe that the state's governing body isn't willing to change its bylaws for a tournament that isn't even sanctioned through them. The only way to change bylaws is by a vote at the annual meeting (isn't that ironic). Is next year's IHPO date set yet? They would need to that in order to vote to change their bylaws a year in advance. Joe - I know you have solid reasons for the date you choose for the tournament that have nothing to do with the ISWA. But the conflict is not the ISWA's fault, and they shouldn't be blamed for it.
  10. Is that sarcasm? This was discussed here last year. The date of the ISWA Annual Meeting is set by its bylaws. It has been that weekend for many years. The question should be "Why would the IHPO decide to set their tournament on the same date as the meeting?" Some of your stabs at the ISWA are justified. This one is not.
  11. Would officials be more likely to call stalling if there were no "free" points involved? What if every stalling call gave the opponent choice of position. They could choose bottom and earn the escape point. If they're behind a lot at the end of the match, they could choose top to try to get a pinning combo.
  12. Scott Schaefer was runner up in '96 Kevin Head was runner up in '94 Both placed ahead of me those years.
  13. Rugby and Lacrosse are going through this process right now. They developed well organized state associations for school club teams that sponsor state tournaments. After several years of development, they are getting closer to the 50% requirement. Some schools are starting to recognize them as "varsity" sports, even though they aren't IHSAA sanctioned yet. When either or both hit that 50% mark, then the IHSAA has to sanction them. The IHSAA will probably want to balance boys/girls sports, and if women's wrestling was at or near the gymnastics number, they might have a chance. Unfortunately, there's a whole lot of work to do to get to that point.
  14. Trey Bates moved back to Tennessee. And he would have been an 8th grader next year.
  15. sites.google.com weebly.com Both of these are free to set up the website (and easy enough for my 7th grade students to use) All you'd have to purchase is a domain. indianasportszone.com is available for about $12 for a year.
  16. The NCAA limits wrestling programs at 9.9 athletic scholarships. With 10 weight classes, that means no schools can possibly give their whole roster full rides. International corruption played a bigger role in wrestling almost getting dropped from the Olympics rather than my paranoid/isolationist view that people who know wrestling should make decisions about wrestling. I have no involvement with football. I'm not going to go to Gridiron Digest and tell them how they should try to get Sectionals seeded and fix the success multiplier. They would call me an idiot and tell me that they are working on it. But thank you, LongBlackLine and casualwrestlingfan. You have managed to bring together some members here who were disagreeing about other topics.
  17. Joe, The traffic you get on here is great. There's no need to increase it just for the sake of increasing it. The site is easy enough to find for those who are interested in finding it. Your members are knowledgeable and passionate about wrestling. I don't think most of us want football fans coming here trying to solve all our problems like we are clueless about our own sport.
  18. Since you are new here... The IHSAA is already aware of our team state duals. They organized and ran the event from 1996-2012 as you have proposed (all in, current year results). After 2012, the IHSAA decided to drop it. Our coaches association asked to run the event and were given their blessing, but we did not receive any help/accommodations that were requested (i.e., weigh in exemption). The current format of our team state duals is the best we can do with the restrictions put on us by the IHSAA. They know what we want but are not willing to provide anything that they don't do for other sports. Feel free to contact them, but you are not going to like any response they give.
  19. Kudos on all your accomplishments. And thank you for your service to our country. (Please don't take those as sarcasm, they aren't.) My point is that Nick is the one person who is doing what you want... providing information and communication. Hating on him isn't going to make other board members want to come seeking your personal opinions. You have the right to your own opinion about the ISWA. Based on your personal experiences with them, I can see why you have these views. I just disagree with you about their transparency and business model. All the information you want is available - website, meeting minutes, annual report, club reps, section reps, and a white book that gets mailed to every member. And no company lets customers make their business decisions - the leadership makes decisions based on what is best for its stakeholders (customers and shareholders). Sometimes those decisions don't work as expected and require more changes. I trust that the ISWA will listen and recognize the adjustments that need to be made.
  20. Yes, I'm in favor of class wrestling. I've stated that in other threads that are about class wrestling. The point would be to challenge themselves to win or place at state. If Chad Red and/or Nick Lee register for state, is everyone else going to stay home because they aren't going to win a spot on the team? Last year was their first attempt at this new process. These kind of experiments usually struggle at first. I tried something similar with the Cadet Duals several years ago. The first year was a disaster. The second year was much better after learning from mistakes. Eventually it adjusted to the what the procedures are now for the Cadet Duals. Nick learned last year that he needs to start the process sooner. That's why he posted about this a few months ago.
  21. Joe, I see your point and it's very valid. But I'd say that most (if not all) of them have been involved in the ISWA for many years and have paid their dues both with hard work and money spent over their careers. I agree that this system isn't 100% fair, but it is what the other top states are doing. We can't compete with them when we try to take a fair team and they hand pick their studs. I'm sure there can be adjustments made to the team selection process that could improve it, though.
  22. You're right. This should have been publicized sooner. Wait. It was! Coach Hull posted about this months ago where it was discussed. There was some resistance as you thought there'd be. Don't tell him to get his crap together when he is trying to represent the ISWA, provide information, communicate with some back-and-forth discussion, and make Indiana wrestling better.
  23. Update: These were voted down. Not much of a surprise.
  24. Here's (yet another) possible solution... First, extend Freestyle/Greco season a few weeks. Move up Folkstyle state 2 weeks and push back Freestyle/Greco state 1 week. 3 ways to qualify for state: A- On an ISWA team. Make a list of which teams auto qualify its members. These wrestlers all train seriously and will train for Freestyle specifically for state. B- Place top 3 at one local tournament. Set criteria for what a qualifying tournament must be. C- Participate at 3 local events (2 if season isn't extended). Wrestlers who can't qualify with A or B could use the extra experience and preparation before state. Medical waivers are up for debate. For very rare circumstances, they can help. But they also open the door for abuse of the system. Feel free to rip this idea apart or add to it.
  25. Thanks for your ideas. I'm not an ISWA board member anymore, but I was on the board for 12 years. A lot of these have been considered and discussed. I'm not trying to simply dismiss your ideas, but just want to point out some challenges with some of them... 1 - I like and support this idea. Schoolboys already have a state tournament at middle school state (with some Novice and Cadets mixed in). Cadets and Juniors have high school state, though ISWA Folkstyle State is a great opportunity for the better JV kids if it is moved up to the week after high school state. 2 - I have no problem with keeping the qualifying rule for the little ones and not for the bigger kids. However, your pricing model, while great in theory, would be an absolute nightmare to implement at state. That's a different price for each individual wrestler. The only possible way to even try it would be to require every qualifying tournament to use track wrestling and get track wrestling to create a pricing formula specific to each age division. I just don't think it is possible. Waivers for ISWA national team members during freestyle season and documented medical/injuries could be managed and help the wrestlers in tough situations. Discounts for accomplishments like placing at state starts to get into IHSAA violations as monetary awards. This was explored for national team pricing once and was dismissed when it was learned that it could impact eligibility. The ISWA already meets every month - some driving from as far as Jeffersonville and South Bend. For a couple of years, meetings were sometimes held up north or down south, but very few clubs/reps came to these meetings, so they stopped. The Section Directors are available to contact with any issues to take to the board - That's one of their main responsibilities. ISWA volunteers have helped new clubs set up and run tournaments their first year. The development is there if it's requested. I'm not sure what "clear team indiana criteria" you're talking about. Juniors are experimenting with a team selection procedure that is similar to some of the top states in the country. Everyone else has very standard criteria for earning a spot on Team Indiana.
