  1. Agree with your bell curve logic but this proposal only impacts the heavier tail. Staying at 14 with this, there is no impact to small wrestler tail (106 - 138 unchanged), benefit to middle of curve, and leaves less room for a spot for the big guys. And I don’t just mean HWT. Agree we should NOT want less weight classes. Agree you have to consider bell curve. Just stinks for the bigger wrestlers above 165 that they are the only tail impacted. Just not sure why they couldn’t trim a few pounds on both tails. Sadly average weight in the world is increasing and not decreasing (which will impact Bell) so this offers less opportunity for football converts, etc.
  2. Indy Nationals acts as a 3rd but yes, I agree. Maybe a Central site on the same weekend as North and South and then Indy Nats could be the 4th and act as a second chance for anyone who couldn’t attend first weekend. At any rate, great that we do this. Looking forward to some good wrestling for these up and comers in two weeks. Evansville event was well run too.
  3. Agree. I foolishly looked away to another mat for a few seconds and heard the rumble from the crowd. It’s never over until it’s over. I had to utter those words to my family “uhh, what happened”!? Congrats. Two tough kids and what a finish.
  4. Excellent article. Now if only my dumb brain could remember how to get back to this article each year for reference when I describe our tourney to out of town friends and family.
  5. Is there also a 3A/4A individual state tourney? Can’t find anything on Track.
  6. I didn’t see this particular call and am not clear on the rule. So I’m not trying to be argumentative. Honest question - do there HAVE to be swipes? Can a ref not count off two seconds in their head as they are trying to get down on the mat in position and call the fall if they feel two seconds were achieved? Seems if we wait for a ref to get down and start swiping some of the older, slower refs may never call a fall in certain instances when one was deserved.
  7. I interpreted it the same way. I didn’t mean exclude as in not let them wrestle. I meant exclude them from seeding consideration. Let me state that I’m not giving an opinion on whether or not Tulsa placement should be a seeding factor. What I am saying, however, is that if 12U kids also go to middle school (some 6th graders) and this is a middle school tourney, those Tulsa winners should get the same treatment as their fellow 7th and 8th grade Tulsa winners. If you guys are saying a 6th grade Tulsa winner should not be above an 8th grade qualifier placer then you are by default introducing a new consideration - that grade level matters. That ignores the fact that they are all in middle school. So should we further separate them all with grade criteria? No, of course not. If a middle school kid goes out to Tulsa and wins and they happen to be a 6th grader I feel we have to consistently give them credit if we are doing it for the 7th and 8th. And for the record I don’t even have a Tulsa kid. Just my two cents. Thanks for the other perspectives on this.
  8. Curious - why call it a 15U tourney? 6th grade is middle school and there are 12U 6th graders, right? If technically 12U could be in middle school why not include those winners if you are going to include 15U Tulsa winners. On the flip side there are 15U kids who are in high school. I guess my point is if you’re going to give consideration to Tulsa winners (and I’m not saying that is right or wrong) then include 12U too.
  9. Not saying you’re wrong but curious where you got that seeding info from? The recently released flyer uses a term “Regionals” which I imagine refers to the 4 Qualifiers, but correct me if I’m wrong. It then states: PLACEMENTS FROM EACH QUALIFIER WILL BE SEEDED ACCORDINGLY: -TULSA PLACE WINNERS -REGIONAL CHAMPS -REGIONAL RUNNER UPS -3rd & 4th PLACE AT REGIONAL SITES -TULSA COMPETITOR The flyer is silent on qualifier 5-8 placers so not sure why you lump them in with Tulsa DNP in your comments. They seem to clearly list Tulsa Competitor in seeding considerations but not 5-8 so doesn’t seem they lump them together. I also interpreted that list as being “in order”. In other words seed priority is Tulsa placers > Qualifier Champs > Qualifier Runner Ups > 3/4 at Qualifiers > Tulsa DNP. And then assuming no language on Qualifier 5-8 means Tulsa DNP > Qualifier 5-8. This would make sense in the context of another poster wishing they knew they could go back and tell their wrestlers 5-8 didn’t matter except to get you in to the event. What am I misunderstanding?
  10. Awesome to hear about that experience at Columbus North. We attended the Carmel qualifier. Well run and no complaints, so we are grateful to Carmel and all their volunteers. It was really crowded since they ran it simultaneously with their “Open” tourney so the gym was really packed. No bleachers so there were “chair camps” everywhere you had to weave through (often with water or drinks spilled on the ground). But I wouldn’t say that is a complaint as it is like that pretty much at most youth tourneys. Again, Carmel ran an on-time and great event so hats off. Suggestion for improvement would only be to learn more about what Columbus did and possibly run the Open in either the main gym or field house and the qualifier in the other. Main gym was open but of course there could be a dozen reasons they couldn’t use the gym so might not even be an option. But would help with the crowd and that gym is top notch and would be like a mini-New Castle HS set up with their cool layout. Great day though. Thanks again Carmel.
  11. I don’t know why, but I needed a Johnny 5 reference in my life this morning! Well done.
  12. With all due respect, you may be misinterpreting the original post. Don’t want to speak for that poster but I imagine they meant to say “crowned just” instead of “just crowned”. In other words, they were saying instead of only crowning a champion there should be wrestle backs to determine other placements (places other than 1st) to smooth out possible seedings that are off. I don’t think the poster meant someone just gets crowned without a heck of a lot of work. That’s how I interpreted the wrestle back comment. I could be wrong though - just ask my wife, I often am. And for the record I’m not saying I agree there should be wrestlebacks. Just saying I don’t think anyone in their right mind would argue any of the champion teams were just given a crown.
  13. Relatively new poster here so hope everyone is okay with a little humor during the post IHSAA season message board slow down. What would you do if you looked out in your front yard and saw an impromptu wrestling match involving Anthony Kiedis? For all you RHCP fans out there skip to the 4:00 (4 minute) mark and enjoy. Technique needs a lot of improvement but I appreciate the effort! Link / 4:00 -
  14. If they are lightweights you may even be able to cut one in half and turn it in to two bands!
  15. Go back to general admission. Charge us all $2 more per ticket. Take those extra thousands in profit and hire extra ushers and security for the first hour of each session to enforce no seat saving rules. If a team shows up with a horde of parents and youth wrestlers to watch good for them. They get a whole section if they wait and get seats. Extra security and ushers take care of the solo seat hoarders. Best $2 any of us would ever spend. We get GA but with no saved seats. It’s always been an enforcement issue. Ticket presale and sitting apart is a bummer.
  16. Thanks as always for this write up. Always fun. You guys rock!
  17. I like where you are going with this with a modification: 1st Stalling - warning 2nd Stalling - 1 point 3rd Stalling - 2 points 4th - DQ You’re not ever going to take stalling out of the officials hands. Too subjective. But for that very reason I like retaining one warning. With ref to ref variability you get warned once and know where things stand with that official and hope they stay consistent. Agree though it shouldn’t take 5 for a DQ. 4 seems reasonable but of course that’s just one man’s opinion.
  18. I think this would be fine and possibly favorable when considering college wrestling and the elite HS wrestlers who are basically training and competing year round anyway. However, this may really hurt our sport with the high school base we sadly still struggle to grow. Consider the varsity wrestler who enjoys the sport, does reasonably well, but also enjoys being a 3 sport athlete. They may never make the podium at state but they are happy enough with the winter season and then running track, playing baseball, rugby or something else in the spring. With this change they will now have to choose between wrestling and what they normally do in the spring. Some may choose wrestling, but many will not. To many winter in Indiana is a great time to spend indoors enjoying this sport but spring means outdoor sports. Again, I fully realize our top wrestlers (and many of those with ambitions of being on top) already wrestle in the spring. But I imagine most rosters, aside from the Brownsburgs, Mater Deis, etc, are comprised of over 50% of kids who have other spring plans.
  19. Only just “rival” the MIC in football? I think that’s an understatement. Besides Center Grove, HCC has been owning the MIC in football as of late. Times change and that trend could change too so not claiming anything is set in stone. But the Westfields, HSEs, and Brownsburgs of football have been roughing up Pike, LC, NC, Ben Davis, etc for years now. Westfield barely lost to CG in the title game and Westfield needed the last play of the game to beat HSE in football sectionals this year. The HCC will be a handful now if this goes through and that’s just football. Baseball? Forget about it! Lots of other sports too. I’m not saying this conference alignment is a good thing or a bad one. I’m just saying let’s not act like the HCC was terrible and all of a sudden a player because Carmel and CG are going there. Obviously lots of wrestling power spread out throughout the state elsewhere but this sure makes for an interesting HCC Conference Tourney too if Carmel and CG are involved.
