Jay County Regional All Star Matchup:

Who wins the Champ v Champ showdown?

    106 v 113 - Johns v Rowles

    120 v 126 - Ruble v Wood

    132 v 138 - Bertsch v Litchfield

    145 v 152 - Abbott v Currie

    160 v 170 - Myers v Johnson

    182 v 195 - Page v Ingenito

    220 v 285 - Heyerly v Orr

I think in this 7 match duel the "lighter weights" have a good shot to win the majority of the matches.  Thoughts?

Rowles with size and experience.  10-6

Ruble with length and experience.  14-6

    Litchfield.  Speed/power/quickness 9-8

    Currie all day.  Speed/power/technique 12-6

Myers in a tough one.  Both have to be about the same age.  Duke is a more complete and cerebral wrestler.  5-4

I want to say Page, as he impressed me.  Igenito did as well.  Another great match I'd pay for.  Ingenito because of size 7-4

Heyerly all day.  If not by pin by Major at least.  He's on another level.

Great hypothetical post.  Love thinking about those matchups.

  2. What a crazy Regional.  I heard from the ticket sales table it was the 5 largest crowd on hand since Jay County started hosting Regionals.  Packed gym.

My predictions.....47 out of 56 placers... but 13 out of the 14 Champions (I had 195 flip flopped in the finals).

My brief 2¢ on a few of them, and a few others:

106 Johns majored Bollinger, which I think most expected.  But...Johns looked much bigger.  Bollinger will be a force next year.  I think Bellmont's Smedley could have finished 2nd had he not been injured.

120 Ruble vs Overby in the Semi's....Overby came out aggressive and looked to slam Ruble...but appeared to hit heads and Overby took the brunt of it.  I think Ruble pinned him soon after in the 1st but it looked to be a fun match before the slam.  The Overby/Curtis match for 3rd was a battle too.

132 Bertsch vs Ulman.  Man....I really though Uhlman would have something for Bertsch this time.  I think last week was Bertsch doing just enough to win...when I thought Uhlman closed the gap.  Wrong.  Bertsch then went full throttle and Tech'd him with ease at Regional.

138 I REALLY wanted to see Gerencser vs Litchfield in the finals.  The much improved Clark took him out in the Semi's in a great match.  Litchfield went on to win again.  Gerencser then went on to have a great match vs Tuttle for 3rd and won.  Tuttle has a very winnable match vs Eberhart 1st round at SS.  We all knew 138 was loaded this year at Sectional and Regional.  Loshe came out aggressive and got a takedown on Gerencser, which only lasted seconds until he got out of position and pinned.  Some kids with great records went out fast, although I often question some of these loaded records by who they've wrestled.

152 Currie over Dull yet again.  The biggest match here was 1st round Evan Watt vs Drew Barr.  I'm not sure if there were words or prior history between the 2 but....Barr took it too far.  I didn't even get to watch McAfee who was wrestling 1 mat over because I was watching the cheap shots from Barr.  Absolutely awful.  The ref did a great job of awarding penalty points to Watt twice before the final crossface from Barr got him DQ'd.  Kudos to that ref.  The Yorktown staff handled it professionally.  Watt Injury Forfeited the rest of his matches.  It's on Berne Witness if you'd like to check it out.  Mat 3 a little over and hour into the broadcast.  The 2nd penalty point is hard to see but they both go out of bounds.  Barr pushes straight down on Watts face getting up.  Terrible way to act and go out.

160 Duke vs Jones was great.  Both had great defense.  Duke seemed a little quicker on his feet to spin around and get a couple takedowns for the win.  I hope both do well at SS.

182 Hunter Page looked GOOD.  I didn't want to see Currie on that side of the bracket, but he came back to 3rd.  Very surprised Friedt didn't do more but he looked like a small 182 for how physically fit he is.

220 I think Martin at this point is sick of wrestling Heyerly.  Martin will be a tough out at SS and his next 2 years.  He wrestles like a 160 pounder.  Heyerly on his way to placing again, probably a bit higher this year.

HWT Cruz got pinned fast by Orr but I'm very impress by the Sophmore.  He'll be tough too the next couple of years.

Ike Ruble vs Jared Brooks for the third time at semi-state. Wrestled in the finals twice and now will mostly likely see each other in the ticket round. Tough draw for the 2x placer Brooks.

Ike hasn't, to me, looked himself this year.  I don't know if sloppy is the word but....he needs to find his leg attacks like he's had the previous 2 years.

With that said, Ruble by a Major.

  4. My Sectional predictions were top notch.  13 out of 14 Champions and had almost every finals correct.

    106 Johns-Bollinger-Cline-Keen

    113 Rowles-Smithley-Keith-Stuffel

    120 Ruble-Mosier-Curtis-Overby

    126 Wood-Cook-Jett-Brooks

    132 Bertsch-Uhlman-Reiley-Bollenbacher

    138 Litchfield-Gerencer-Tuttle-Clark

    145 Abbott-Kinnick-McAfee-Lewis

    152 Currie-Dull-Manley-Barr

    160 Myers-Jones-Abbott-Funk

    170 Johnson-Summersett-Russell-Gourley

    182 Page-Friedt-Currie-Wenk

    195 Kukelhan-Ingenito-Bluhm-Jones

    220 Heyerly-Kennedy-Waters-Martin

    285 Orr-Cruz-Hiatt-Robinson

  5. I do know SA has a few kids coming up, a couple Loshe's and a Patterson.  They might be able to compete in a year or two with the big programs of the county.  I need to find their Middle School schedule and check them out.

  6. Bellmont would have smashed AC in team score at Sectional if they weren't missing 2 high ranked starters and the Faurote match ended like it should.  Not sure why their HWT doesn't attack the legs.  He's a very athletic kid but uses his upper body strength instead of going legs.  He should have won it Saturday too.

With that said, they're very Senior loaded this year.  They might have a down year or two coming at them but they have some great JV kids.  I watched their middle school vs us a week or two ago.  Bellmont won by a few points but overall I think our kids looked a lot better.  Bellmont has 2 or 3 decent 8th graders but they're mid-weights.  I think Jay County owns next years Sectional as they're squad is young, we'll give them a run but we have some stud Seniors graduating too.  It's all about building the youth programs, and I think Currie does an amazing job attracting great numbers out of a small community.

  7. It won't happen, ego's and bravado but......I'd love for the ref to come out with a full explanation in the Decatur Democrat (if Dane could get an interview) of what exactly he saw.  Did he just call 2 reversal early thinking Uhlman was scooting around...and it just didn't happen and his pride kept him from taking the 2 away?  Did he see something everyone (including the camera) missed?

There was another terrible call (IMO, I could be very wrong), I think in the Currie/Dull match where Dull was out of bounds and Currie had the ankles and got rewarded 2.  For control, doesn't the wrestler have to control at least 1 knee with an ankle?  I didn't understand that either.

That ref should never ref another match again, absolutely robbed the poor kid. Should’ve been in the finals, instead he’s going home.

Awful call.  It was the first thing I pulled up on Berne Witness when I got home.  No reversal in any sense of wrestling that I've ever experienced. And to see that ref LAUGHING about it after he sat down made it worse.  He had 1 other terrible non-call in Luginbill's match I believe the next round when the opponent was just laying flat.  I hardly ever complain about ref's, as I used to do a lot of umpiring little league baseball games.  This ref however, downright pitiful.

I told y'all AC would push Bellmont, and nearly pulled it off.  After Bellmont won the 195 weight class it was over.   Dull and Currie did not disappoint again.  I'll have to review my predictions and see how I did.  The Hernandez 138 impressed me.  Beat Loshe for 3/4.  Going to be a tough Regional for those guys.  138 is stacked.

AC and Jay County don’t have the horsepower. I say Bellmont comes away with 5 champs and 7 in the finals with another 5 getting through.

Going with my predictions in the other thread I agree with 5 champs from Bellmont.  I think they'll push more through to the finals though.

Definitely a sectional people might be  looked over…

126 Has wood and Cook who will battle it out in the finals.. With walker and Daniels who are now slouches battling too!

132 is stacked with three State qualifiers and then to add Calvin Faurote who has beat two of them(Ulhman, and pinned Reiley).

138 is tough having two qualifiers and a stud in Loshe, not to over look Hernandez who had a close match with Clark!

I feel for Gavin Davis and Austin Lewis(state qualifier) who both won’t be wrestling Saturday at 145. Both would be contenders to be a State qualifier.

152 has three state ranked guys in the weight class with Currie, Dull, and Manley..

Belmont has to be the clear favorite team wise but AC and Jay co could contend.

With the 106 and 145 for Bellmont potentially out tomorrow I think AC or Jay County could steal the team win.  If Bellmont's studs all win in the finals it'll be hard to beat them though.

    126 @ Delta has

#5 in FWSS Justin Boone (Yorktown)

    #6 in FWSS Jayden Jett(cowan)

    #7 in FWSS Kaeb Stebbins(delta)

and add in a tough semi-state qualifier in Dawson Brooks from Daleville who beat Jett and Boone last year. All these kids are young tough wrestlers which could make this weight really interesting.

Can't wait to see you guys in Regional next week.  Loaded brackets top to bottom.

  12. Y'all need to lay out your predictions or go to another thread and talk about boring CP vs BB or EMD or Cathedral or..........

After I pretty much nailed every single weight class in my ACAC predictions (with a few minor slips).....2 sips of ol Grand Dad has me knowing this for our Sectional at Jaytucky......

106  Levi over Moore (I heard Smedley is hurt, or else he would be 2nd)

    113  Rowels over Smithley

    120  Ruble over Curtis

126  Wood over Cook in another battle

132  Bertsch over Faurote (although I hope Uhlman's conditioning is better and beats Faurote this time)

138  Litchfield over Clark (LOADED bracket...Loshe probably won't make it out of Regional...2x blood round kid at SS)

145  McAfee over who knows...Gage again?  With Davis potentially being out this bracket is weird.  Wish Carter Thomas was still available...

152  Currie over MANLEY (Manley over Dull in Semi's...take it to the pay window now)

160  Duke over AJ in a tough match

    170  Eli over Summersett

182  Friedt over Wenk (yes, you read that right...Friedt beats Currie again)

195  Kukelhan over Bluhm (Bluhm will get revenge on Bravo!)

    220  Heyerly over...probably Martin

    285  Cruz over Robinson again

    My edit:

145 McAfee over Lewis of Bluffton

  13. That's terrible.  I was hoping when it happened it was just a stinger or a joint separation.  This brings up Aiden Miller as the backup?  How does that change brackets?

I'll have my (heavily Bellmont favored) predictions tomorrow.  Should be fun to see others as well.  Albeit it's just Sectional and most will be fairly easy to pick the champs.

Did the sips block out the Bellmont part of your memory...

Correction: I was reading some of the sectional commentary and forgot this was an ACAC post...thought we were talking about sectional...and I

haven't even had any sips yet.

Oh don't worry, the Sectional predictions will be loaded with Bellmont names.

  15. I can see AC making a good push against Jay County, but I think Jay takes it easily.

Reiley, man, that's tough.  I'm guessing he's too big for 120 and can't beat Wood out at 126.  Faurote man handled him at Team State at 132.  That's 2 years in a row Reiley has been in a tough spot come Sectional/Regional.

Predictions after a few sips of ol' Grand Dad.....

    106 Levi doesn't break a sweat...probably won't until Regional or SS

    113 Rowles with ease

    120 Taye Curtis

126 Wood over Cook in a good one

    132 Berstch over Uhlman

138 Loshe over Clark (this could go either way and will be a preview of the next few weeks in a loaded class)

145 McAfee over Gage (I think he gets Wanner this time)

152 Currie over Dull...rinse repeat through Regional

160 Funk over Myers (although Apps is a solid bodied kid and could be in the finals)

170 Kahn over Summersett...over flip this

    182 Currie over Wenk

    195 Bluhm over Farmer

    220 Heyerly doesn't break a sweat

285 Cruz has impressed me for only being a sophmore.  Athletic big man.

Moving up in an age group should be allowed during High School season with 14U wrestlers.  I understand the idea behind it but disagree with it during HS season.  16u wrestlers are in 8th grade. 14u are mostly middle school if not all in Middle School.  Elementary Duals can have a 6th Grader wrestle a 2nd grader which is also an ISWA event.  I would love to see ISWA change the rule during HS wrestling season.  Some middle school programs do not even start wrestling until the end of January, and finding matches can be hard.  My son doesn't go to many tournaments but the 2 we have been to have only had a handful of kids in the 16u division.  He doesn't have a great birthday for wrestling I guess.  I would just like to know others thoughts on this.  Maybe I am just looking at from a Dads perspective.

I feel you.  One of my grandsons turned 14 early his freshman year.  For years at the smaller local tournaments he had to wrestle up to at least have a few matches.

  17. I want to see how AC stacks up with the southern schools.  We're getting healthier and the football kids are now in wrestling shape.  With that said, Tell City in the 2nd is tough.  I think PH wins it though, easily.

2A Bellmont smashes the field.  I'm guessing JayCo gets revenge on Delta and puts on a good show against Bellmont.  JayCo's lightweights will score a lot of points against Bellmont's, sans Ruble.  Once they get to 132 or 138 Bellmont walks away with it.

I have a hard time characterizing it as "inherited" given his level of involvement in the program and the development of those seniors before becoming the head coach.

I understand you don't see it that way as an entire body of work.  In terms of the title of "Head Coach" and the stats that come with it, it's inherited by definition.  That's all I meant.  Everyone in the area knows what he's done from the DWC and the Elementary program.  Nothing but love for it, and a bit of envy.
