If you include private schools (like St. Vincent's), you get a few more because of the Lutheran schools. However, if we are discussing public schools, the only middle school program for Fort Wayne Community Schools is Blackhawk. That program was only started because Mike Ester was passionate about the product he was helping produce at Snider. Say what you will about Ester, but wherever he goes, teams tend to win (Snider, Trine, Indiana Tech). Since his departure from Snider, the school and the conference have been on a decline.

Personally, I don't think the SAC is going to invite Carroll and Homestead any time soon for wrestling. This year, Carroll would have placed wayyy out front with Homestead a distant second, followed by Dwenger in 3rd (based on tournament results i.e. Concordia Invite, New Haven Invite, Mooresville Holiday Classic, IHSAA Regional).

As a head coach, I have learned that this sport takes a lot of time, energy and commitment. I know that most sports do but I think wrestling is unique because we have a smaller number of families, individuals and leaders to draw upon to help organize things. As a result, the few leaders in the area may get burned out and invest the minimum time necessary to run a successful PROGRAM but don't have the extra time and energy to help develop a COUNTY.

Potential solution: The head coaches in the area form meaningful relationships, put aside our egos and use our resources collectively so that all wrestlers in the area can rise together. Believe me, I am just as much to blame as the next guy. I want Homestead to win championships so most of my time and energy is devoted there. However, I love this sport and how it helps develop young men and it would mean a lot to me to see Fort Wayne wrestling back on the map.

Unfortunate that Carroll (Fort Wayne) is effectively going to be stealing a spot from a more deserving team for no other reason than geography.  They wouldn't even be in consideration for a wild card spot if the top 10 automatically qualified, as they are more than 15 points from the 10th team on the list.

How far off am I on this map?  I couldn't spend a ton of time on this.  As far as land goes I see disproportions here and it isn't up North.

As a footnote and answer to the question the last 5 state champs from Fort Wayne city schools were

1998 Talamantes dwenger and Lapsley from snider

    2001 Greg Wagner snider

2002 graylan early north side and Jason Woodson snider

Obviously winning a state title is the ultimate pinnacle and only one guy wins each year per weight. But looking back at the history(thanks y2 for all the data at our fingertips) of the 3 teams mentioned homestead, Carroll and Leo (2 of those are 6a schools by the way) . There were a total of 4 state champs between the 3 of them and 2 of those were 30 years ago. So I will take a reach here and say #makenortheastindianawretlinggreatagain....or better yet #makeallencountywrestlinggreatagain

I will take the Ft. Wayne comment a step further. If you factor out the schools that are on the periphery of the semi state, Ft. Wayne area wrestling had a very poor showing this past weekend. I see the core of the Ft. Wayne area as Allen, Dekalb, Steuben, Lagrange, Noble, Whitley, Adams, Jay, Wells, Huntington, and Wabash counties. From those counties there were 6 placers total: 3-8th, 2-7th, 1-5th. Three of those were from Adams County. Allen county had zero placers. Let me repeat, the third largest county in the state had zero placers. Joe mentioned this area has a lot of small schools, but it is the big schools in the area that are not keeping pace with the big schools in the rest of the state. Just look at the team state results since the new format. The Ft. Wayne area represents very well in AA and A.

I'm not trying to call out any individuals, teams, etc., but the first step to fixing a problem is to recognize that there is a problem. Years ago FWCS dropped middle school wrestling. Is that the biggest factor? Do other parts of the state conduct their off season differently? I don't know. I am merely a fan. I don't know what can be done to improve wrestling in the greater Ft. Wayne area, but I am sure there are people on this board who could probably come up with some great suggestions or ideas.

Fort Wayne by far has the most small schools and least amount of total students compared to the other semi-states.

I would question what constitutes a slam in the rule book. I sat next to a licensed official and he said slamming was a point of emphasis this year. I thought Bautista returned him with force, but followed him to the mat, so it didn't appear that there was intent to cause injury. I can't speak to the extent of the injury to the Penn wrestler or whether he was trying to win an academy award, but he seemed able to wrestle after the first two stoppages. I thought the ref got too involved in the match (I'm aware there is an officials link, Fabio, no need to share it) and should have allowed 2 talented wrestlers to decide who was going to state on the mat. I know neither kid, but from my spacious seat, I felt the fans were robbed of a great match. Removing all the "slam" points, I believe that's a tied match with a minute and a half left in the 3rd, with a spot at state on the line, that's what it's all about.

I agree that there doesn't need to be a topic posted every time a ref gets a call wrong, but where has this idea that "if you don't like the calls, become a ref" come from? If you get a poorly cooked meal, do you have to become a chef before you can criticize it? If somebody does a half-assed job fixing your car, do you have to shrug it off if you aren't a mechanic yourself? Nobody is perfect, everyone makes mistakes, but we don't have to baby the refs every time somebody complains about their call. On the flip side though, we don't have to make threads on a message board about them.

Yep, you're a perfect guy I'm sure Nick. I used to watch you wrestle. You "whined"a few times. Preach to all of us. Message boards are for sharing people's passionate thoughts. You've spouted plenty of your opinions on here. Nobody on here has named the official or demeaned him. The conversation is primarily about a coaches ethics of lack thereof, depending on your perspective. The message board allows people to vent. Thank goodness. Wrestling coaches and families need it sometimes. Thanks Y2!

As a parent of a senior wrestling tomorrow. It will be an emotional day. Win or lose tomorrow I am nothing but proud of him and his past 4 years. He has learned so much on that mat, the highs from the wins and the lows of his losses have taught him life lessons I alone could not have taught him. He has made friends from surrounding schools he would have never met had it not have been for wrestling. He has pushed himself further than I could have ever pushed him. His coaches and his team mates have formed him into an incredible young man who has a bright future. Again, nothing but pure pride and joy for him.
I will miss sitting in those bleachers cheering him and his team mates on.
Lets go boys. One more weekend. You got this. I am nothing but blessed to be along for the ride,

I think you can make excuses for each one of those situations or you can look at it from the perspective of "did they meet their individual goals?"

Poynter was wrestling like a medalist with a win over Triana and a runner-up finish at semi-state and he'd beaten Mejia previously and failed to get a medal.  Cornejo was wrestling like a medalist being the only one all year to not be pinned by Hughes and his runner-up finish at semi-state and he failed to get a medal.  Murillo was facing a guy he had beaten earlier in the year on Friday night and failed to get a medal.  Bam was looking like the champ all year, coming off a runner-up finish at state and didn't get the job done.  Torres was coming off a runner-up finish in the state the year before and looking for a title and didn't get it done.

Rumph had a nice win Friday over Molloy in a match he wasn't favored in.  I'd say he overperformed.
McIntosh had a nice win in the semis over Vaughn to get into the title match.  I'd say he overperformed.

I'd say 2 of 7 left Bankers Life happy.  That's an under-performance in my book and far from "dialed in".
