I watched it again as well and basically what he said was "this interview is ridiculous." Certainly not the most egregious thing I have seen a hc do in the heat of the moment, I will grant you that.
I took what he was saying is that it was ridiculous that he should even have to answer any questions in this interview. I certainly agree that most hcs in any sport despise giving interviews at this point and hurry off to be with their team. They have a job to do, and they want to do it. We also have all seen reporters ask stupid questions and an incredulous coach do all he can to answer with out slugging a reporter.
Saying that...I still think a head coach has a responsibility to carry himself better in dealing with the media and the fans. He must have agreed to answer questions at that point. If he did not want to do it send an assistant coach. MLB and the NHL (if they ever play again) has interviews right during the game or during the inning or period break and they seem overall to handle it ok.
I still think part of this issue is the fact is that it is great for wrestling fans that the Big ten network runs Big ten wrestling duals, the midlands, and the NCAA. When can you watch this level of wrestling competition on TV except for the Olympics every 4 years, and then NBC wont run the wrestling matches, because they have to show beach volleyball? Because of this when I see a premier coach like Brands say it is ridiculous that he has to give an interview for the fans, it sort of seems to be counter productive. I mean what the hell, most high school coaches are happy when the local media covers their sport and gives some publicity for their athletes and this great sport. I don't know much about Tom Brands as a coach and a person, so i take KarlHungus at his word that he is a net positive. I have also seen net positives like Bobby Knight, Woody Hayes, and Joe Paterno self destruct because of their own egos and sense that they were untouchable.
