    I agree. What we teach em when they lose, especially when life is unfair and they feel robbed is more important than actually winning.

    How many 106 guys have a record of 78-5? If that continued for 2 more years she would finish 156-10. How many wrestlers can have a career like that? I don't care who you are. 156 wins in 4 years in high school is good, very good. Bottom line. She out wrestled all but 15 guys in the State. How many of the 15 others left will she out wrestle will be decided this weekend. Lastly, women can be Special Forces against the guys. Why can't they wrestle against them?

    I don't think there is a single wrestler who has reacted well to losing EVERY single time. Dan Gable pouted for a week after losing his final NCAA match (until his mom got in his ___). Metcalf never handles losing well. Sanshiro Abe never showed up to the awards after finishing 2nd at the Big 10 Championships. Best reaction I've seen after losing under the lights was last year when Brooks was trying to give Todd knucks and hug him. Bottom line is these are wrestlers, young wrestlers. You don't get to that level without being a fiery young man (or woman). If they were robotic in the way they control emotion and wrestling, it just wouldn't be exciting to watch. If these kids were without displays of emotion (that may get the better of them sometimes) this sport wouldn't survive. Fans wouldn't feel for the kid whose dreams get crushed on a last second takedown. We wouldn't scream wildly at the huge upsets. We wouldn't be cheering for the kids who have been through ____ for the past year. We wouldn't give standing ovations for 4 timers. We wouldn't appreciate the kids who have already learned class and are trying to impart that to those around them who are still coming to grips with success and failure... Without emotion, under control or otherwise....we'd all be watching mathletes at state.

    They were a fun group to watch. That team took 5 guys to state my last year out there. Those 5 placed 1st, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th. Coach there has a good approach to wrestling...Good luck to Kayla. Looking forward to seeing her mess up some of the guys in the next few weeks.

    I saw one. Older sister of a guy I coached in WA. Camie Yeik. She finished 6th against the guys. Shortly after, WIAA created a women's tournament category. Sidenote. Her brother won the 130 lbs state title that year. Then added another state title his senior year (finished 2nd his junior year). His little brother has a runner-up finish and a title. Their school district still has an out of date rule on the books that prevents freshmen from starting varsity sports. If Cody Yeik reaches the finals again this year, neither brother will have ever finished out of the top 2 at State. It is a class system, but fairly decent showing for an entire family. It's a bit hard to appreciate when you get to see Alex and Jason never finish out of 1st place in a one class system....but...when will we seriously get to see that again?

    Wall Sprints- 2 min of sprinting wall to wall, 30 sec of push ups, 2 more minutes of sprints, 30 sec of pull ups, 2 more minutes of sprints, 30 sec of squat jumps, then overtime. close second would be grind matches. Never did them in high school when the room was warm. But All Navy coach Rob Hermann had us doing them in that wide open gym in Pensacola. February in Florida is freakin cold. You never quite warm up. The mat feels like an ice cube. You scramble like a mad man trying to avoid letting skin touch the mat for any length of time.

    Not sure how much has changed since 96, but we managed to have the same results in 95 ( Md #1, New castle T2) with individual scoring as we did the following year with Team state. Didn't they keep score at Individual state all this time? How does it match up with the results of Team state? I understand both sides. I have to say, I loved wrestling at team state during that first edition. Especially in the finals. Great experience...

    What happened in Sliga's semi-final match last year? He wrestled kinda shell-shocked after that first period. Those last periods didn't look like the guy I watched video of.

    They push the same thing the Navy has been stressing for years. Brilliance on the Basics. Drilling the fundamentals for so many years that it becomes as common as breathing. Ever watched a top tier wrestler try to demonstrate a bad habit or the wrong way to do something on the mat? The basics are so ingrained that they have a difficult time screwing it up.

    Coach Hull's Arlington guys have awesome attitudes. Worked with them a few times last year until the job and a destroyed neck took me away. They are all amazing. Wrestling is an easy thing when you're bred to do nothing else. But for these kids, with all that they have to put up with in their personal and scholastic lives each day, having the determination to show up each day...take a beating at practice...get back up...go back into a rough world...then get up and do it all again.... they are absolutely amazing. I've met and deal with professional soldiers, sailors and marines that have less drive. They may not be flashy, they may not even win, but every single day they get up and carry on...they are succeeding.

    Ok... So does that mean that high school football players need to stop going to see games...and basketball players... You can guarantee that if I had the chance to see Iowa wrestle live when I was a high schooler, I was there... Went to see Purdue, Northwestern, Indiana... No contact with anyone from the schools... just sat...ate my popcorn and watched... Nothing beats seeing these guys for real...What about high school coaches getting the team together for trips to watch the NCAA Tournament? Seems ridiculous that we have some of the best NCAA Wrestling in the country and we can't even take wrestlers to go see it? At some point these guys have to realize that not everyone's family can afford to take them to see stuff like this... I'd wager that a large majority of wrestling families in Indiana have very little expendable income and struggle just to get their kids to tournaments on the weekends.. Something like this comes along and we tell them no? Really? Why? Because the other 100 NCAA wrestling teams will complain that they didn't have a fair shot at recruiting a certain kid? Two things...one...It's called a pipeline state for a reason... (look at how beserk Iowans went when 4 timers Jay Borschel and Dan LeClere left Iowa for Va Tech), two... Just because a spectacular wrestler watches a certain team and grows up in a given area doesn't mean the whole pipeline state thing is a lock...For example Derek Garcia....4 timer from Washington's Sedro Wooley HS... Grew up with Boise St and Oregon St in his backyard...They loved this kid in the Pacnorwest...until he did the unthinkable and announced "Hey...I'm gonna be a Buckeye" Bottom line is Indiana wrestlers have the opportunity to see top notch wrestling and we say no?

    You know what... It could have settings.. Like the NCAAF games.. There's a family mode that only uses a couple buttons... Have the basic skills on the buttons... use the joysticks and triggers to make it more complex... Seriously... Check out how complex they made the UFC games... It's like all the combo moves from the old mortal kombat games on crack... You may want to patent that last one though.... "Gotta have faith, no matter the odds" Great Quote. We could always convince some company to release it when the next COD or Halo game drops....That way they cover the losses...just in case... but hey...200,000 copies at 40 bucks per....or say 50 bucks and donate the extra 10 bucks to a wrestling charity like the "Living the Dream" fund...
