  1. That's are really fair question. Placers/ Champs are the only time you see a statistically significant difference in what you would expect. There are a couple of explanations for that though.

    1. Would be that there is an advantage at that level to being at a big school, this may be the case.

    2. I am sure there is a socioeconomic component to kids getting to this level as well. Many of the big schools that do well are located where successful people have clustered to raise their kids, so if that is a factor, which I belive it is, it might be seen explain the drop.

    3. The group we are discussing is so small that the level of athlete that has the ability to place/ be a champion are simply not found with-in the population of some of the small schools. I would need a more in depth knowledge of statistics, but if we take natural ability into account at all, I would be willing to bet that could explain at least some of the dip in numbers.

If there is truly no advantage for the larger schools, as you believe, then your 11% would follow through all levels, including placers and champs.  It does not, and never has.

  2. It's crazy that those numbers almost mirror the total population of each class. Which is BTW what you would staistically expect, which shows that things in terms of qualifiers is realitivily fair.

The total population of the schools is BY FAR the biggest advantage big schools have, yet when it comes down to looking at the numbers we should ignore that fact and just say that each team enters 14 kids at sectionals?

You have to take the total population into account. That was the original group that big schools have to choose from. The problem with doing this of course is that the facts show a slight disadvantage to 1A and 3A schools and a slight advantage to being from a 2A school, which doesn't fit the class fans narritive, so you guys choose to ignore that fact.

The numbers are similar every year, and every year the numbers mirror the total populations. Which again is staistically what you would expect.

Why aren't 11% of the placers from 1a?

  3. It explains why Jay County gets more qualifiers in general. Add to that JC had 5 4th place finishers which tells me draws made a HUGE impact on their qualifier numbers. The three other regionals only had 3, 4th place finishers.

This "formula" has been the same for the past 7 years.

Fair enough, 8 is still a large margin to write off as having good draws, was my point.

  4. Moving the number to seven and even five is still an all in event, as all schools have the opportunity to work the halls to move from three kids to seven kids. I don't think the IHSWCA is saying any particular school is not eligible, but to be eligible you have to have this many wrestlers. Kinda like saying you have to have this many points to eligible to be considered as an wild card to the team state event as all schools have the opportunity to score enough points, just has the have the opportunity to works the halls.

Great point.  Good luck getting that across to the committee.

  5. That's not really my decision.  That line was already drawn, and the people in charge voted not to change it.

The ideal event would be IHSAA sponsored, classed, all-in duals from start to finish (not just sectional champs), and separate from the individual post season.

Bracket tournament of duals on a Saturday, one weeknight dual on Wednesday, then team state the next Saturday.  It would take lots of organizing to make it happen, so the IHSAA would have to be in charge of it and give it the ultimate creditbility.

"Do you think we should," not "what did someone else decide."

  6. Joe, I'll ask again - How does excluding teams help their programs grow?

Why can't a team with 5 or 6 solid young wrestlers see how they compare?  A coach could use that as motivation to say "See how we did with just a few guys - let's get more guys so we can do even better."

If you're concerned with the data managers wasting their time calculating scores for teams with no chance, don't you think they would have complained if it was really a problem?  I've done it for them.  With the spreadsheets they've created, it's not too difficult to do.

Who is saying their scores can't be calculated?  They just wouldn't be figured into the division of the three classes.

  7. Woops.  Joe will post the updated version shortly with Madison-Grant and Blue River Valley into 1A and Perry Central and N. Central-Farmersburg out.

I knew the number of schools we had and I was meticulous going through 3A and 2A to be sure I had the breaking points right, then I rushed through the rest of the list of all IHSAA schools and made 2 errors in paring down to the 102 we needed for 1A.  I had someone double-check by doing his own list and he had the same class breaking points, so he missed the fact that I had 2 wrong schools in and 2 left out when I prepped the final doc

You need a better double-checker, it would seem.

Great day for the Braves.  I always look forward to the annual 74smack Jay County Sectional picks.  Really nice work.

  9. Take it however you want, I guess. The article I shared was from a newspaper in Pennsylvania, so it's credible. It was to show that if a state with Pennsylvania's strong heritage and connection to wrestling is suffering with the number of forfeits and they are classed, that it could be something else Not the lack of class wrestling here in Indiana.

Where did you get your data? Did you compile it? Did you research each state's teams? I find it hard to believe you were able to retrieve it all so quickly!

Probably made it up right?  That would make the most sense.

  10. Well ya, that would have been the 1/2 the size that I was referring to! 1850/2=925...this is worse than 850.

Here is their class breakdown by school size

    Division Enrollment Schools

    I 351 and more 164

    II 194-350 166

    III 193 and less 167

    Total Teams 497

    Ohio Data per school

      Forfeits Schools Average

    D1   2130    179   2.10

    D2   2280    203   2.77

    D3   1912    201   4.49

The size is boys only so DI is 702+, DII is 388-700, and DIII is 386-.

Here are Indiana's numbers if you split by those sizes

    Size For  #Schools Avg

    D1     202   152   1.33

    D2    372   106   3.51

    D3   286     50   5.72

As you can tell Ohio has 100 more small schools than we do.

From this data I can make a pretty strong argument that Ohio's small schools are in better shape than in Indiana.

Seems like you ignored Y2's latest post?

  11. Congrats Brownsburg on a job well done. Your kids wrestled hard and they earned the state title. P.S. It was nothing personal, I'm just a fan of another team, much respect for your program. It isn't a huge shock as you guys have been making waves in middle school and at Disney for quite sometime now.

    What a joke.
