Indiana Pride is taking 20+ athletes to the U.S. Open in Las Vegas, from youth to the Senior level athletes, looking to repeat on a pretty good showing we had last year.  Just because you don't hear us doesn't mean we arent making noise  Best wishes to all the Indiana wrestlers over the next few months.

No one deserves anything but you have to earn it.  Wrestling, just like with everything else, has evolved.  There are plenty examples of multi-sports athletes who do well in wrestling....but it's all relative.  Usually these are football players and heavier weights where there is less technique needed than at the lighter weights, but in measuring yourself against the top wrestlers in the country year-round training is essential.  I could delve even further into this yearly training about effectiveness versus efficiency, but that's another topic.
Either way, the top scholastic programs in the state and country wrestle year-round and on the surface academies typically help those from programs who do not have these opportunities.  There are pros and cons with almost anything we do, or not do, and it could be argued the same here.  Yes, year round training can be detrimental, but it largely depends on the training and programming they are receiving - from school or academy.  On the other hand if the programming is correct, year-round training or specialization is essential.
Men lie and women lie, but numbers don't. If you truly want to give your kid the best advantage in this sport, understand at some point they will have to specialize.  When depends on a variety of factors, but where they do means much more.  Hopefully their school has a great program but if not then there are a handful of academies around the state that can supply the demand. If you don't have an opportunity for either, your best bet is to participate at as many RTCs as possible.

    This is from coach Tonte:
I don’t have an account, but this is something I wanted to make sure I said something about.  I have many friends that run academies and don’t think any of them would consider guys like us as part time coaches.  We and countless other coaches running successful programs do not consider ourselves to be part timers.

Just playing Devil's Advocate here, but in a lot of instances, this is exactly the opposite of what is true.  The high school coach is with the athlete from November to February for his 4 years of high school.  The Academy coach has been with that athlete year-round since he was 6 or 7 years old.

Great points made in nearly all the above posts.  I would only add that strictly from a legality standpoint......private sessions are in fact legal. This came from Assistant Commisioner Robert Faulkens himself, in a response to an email our AD & I sent.  He paralleled privates (paid) to more of a clinic.  Obviously no other athletes from separate schools can be involved, the clinician can have no direct contract or be coaching at another in-state high school, and also that you can't have the individual instructing multiple kids at once.  He referred us to rule 15-1.4.  It states........
    a. Students may not attend a non-school sponsored clinic in a team sport, but may attend a non-school sponsored clinic in an individual sport (note: wrestling is considered an individual sport).

    b. If a clinic is conducted over more than 1 day, students will be limited to 3 hours of sports instruction or daily practice.

    c. a Clinic must be conducted during non-school time and no school practices or contests may be missed.

Apart from answering the "legal" aspect of your question.  Certain preferences come into play with various coaches.  In fact, I know of a couple coaches who prefer their kids train absolutely nowhere else!  And yes....that includes the off-season. While that wouldn't be the right fit for me personally.......I can tell you this.  Those guys resume's speak for themselves. They've produced (or helped produce) multiple State Champs.  I'd simply encourage you to hit all the angles with the current coach.  Allow him to thoroughly explain himself to you in person.  Not saying this is the case.....but I've found that in many cases the greatest problems between Coaches/Parents/Wrestlers come down to an overall lack of communication. Genuinely hope things work out positively for you & your son brother.

We are getting close and still have a few opening available for one of the toughest tournaments in the country in the 2017 Junior National Dual Championships.  The event will be held in Tulsa, OK on June 20-24 and feature GUARANTEED matches against the best of the best State Champions, All-Americans, National Champions and even World Team Members from over 40 states. Indiana is taking a Gold and Blue team with alternates at every weight intended to compete and develop.  Undefeated wrestlers earn a spot on the All-Junior Team, which counts towards your national ranking.  It is a great precursor to Fargo and there are over 100 college programs in attendance coaching and scouting.
Indiana's current team already has more seeding points than in the past decade as we are gearing up to make a statement, but because of two teams and alternates we still have a few openings @ 100, 113, 120, 126, 132, 152, 160, 182, 195.  First come first serve.  If you are interested please contact anyone on staff below.  The cost is $550 which is due at registration or no later than bus departure.

RTC season spans from February 27th and tapers off by July 7th, right before Kids Nationals and Fargo.  This year we are increasing our network of local and national clinicians, providing more support to individual sites, reintroducing Team Indiana RTCs on Sundays for men and women, are opening up attendance to Schoolboys now as well, and will be having a RTC Dual Tournament on April 22nd in Indianapolis which will also feature area youth freestyle/greco duals.

Best wishes the rest of the IHSAA season and we look forward to a great spring and summer for Indiana wrestling!

I was fortunate enough to make a trip to Iran with the US National Team in 2000. For a pure wrestling experience, this was the best trip I had been on. Passionate and knowledgeable fans, excellent food, VIP treatment, greeted at the airport by TV stations and the press, excellent competition. It was all about wrestling with very little else.

One of my best referee friends is Iranian. We used to joke about how closed minded our governments were. Today they proved it.

Political tit for tat and the Americans just got some "Tat".   Then the wrestlers get screwed.     Its a shame because more than any other sport,  wrestling has always been able to break down political barriers.  Maybe both leaders need to rethink this.

Wrestling was one of the best bonds the US and Iran had going.  Even through all the politics, I have constantly read how wrestling fans from both countries has been respectful and even at times supportive of wrestlers from the other nation.  This decision isn't helping to grow that comradery any.

We are taking a play our of some of the college programs playbook the past few year and The #19 Floyd Central Highlanders will be wrestling the #3(KY) St. Xavier Tigers on our auditorium stage on Dec 23rd. The Floyd Central vs St. X dual is always a fun and exciting dual and we have decided to amp it up a notch this year. Our middle school programs will start the program, then a few JV matches and varsity will be the main event.

I know that is is the date of the IHSWCA team state but if anyone is close to the Southern Indiana area this will be an amazing high school wrestling event to attend. We have a national recognized theater program that has agreed to work with us on sound and lighting as well.

Our Facebook page will have updates and reminders next week. We also plan on trying to run a Facebook Live feed from our Facebook page.

I feel your pain. My daughter finally won her first state championship last year and was eagerly waiting to see her name in the (2016 ISWA Book). When we got it she seen the results from 2 years ago when she first started. Needless to say she was a disappointed, as was I, but that's it. We've raised her to understand that life is not fair and sometimes things don't go your way. She said, that's ok dad, next year I'm going to be a triple crowner, it'll be hard to mess that up three times. I was wowed by the way she overlooked it and moved on so quickly. I felt very proud in knowing she's learned at a very young age not to worry about things we can't control, and work towards the things we can. To think the ISWA did this intentionally never crossed our minds. The ISWA is comprised of mostly volunteers and people who GENUINIENLY care about wrestling. I called to let them know about what had happened and they were very apologetic and said they are working on fixing it in the online publication.
