Junior Worlds - FS Day 1

57kg: Ahmad Javan beat Bazarbayev (2022 Asian Gold, 2022 Junior World Silver) in the first round and looked great, but then got pinned by a very good Azeri who himself got pinned by an American in the last 7 seconds in the SF... AJ is out. Maybe 4 points. Can we send Khateri to Worlds? Lol

65kg: Shakeri unexpectedly made the final vs USA. He looked good throughout the day (almost bottled it against the Russian in the SF but didn't). He has a good chance to win, Mendez is probably the weakest American finalist of the 3. (20/25 pts)

70kg: Rezaei (2023 Asian Gold) did well as I expected, defeating U20 Euro champ 9-6 in the first round and will wrestle for Gold in the final vs Shapiro (USA) tomorrow. He will unfortunately probably lose, Shapiro is fantastic. (20/25 pts)

79kg: Safi (2023 Asian Silver) lost 10-0 to Kadiev in the first round (who was so much better than him) but is pulled back into the repechage. Based on Asians he should have a chance for Bronze. (hopefully 10/15 pts)

97kg: Babaloo avenged his loss to 2023 Asian Gold Kurugliyev (KAZ) and convincingly beat him 6-1 then convincingly beat an American 5-1 and will wrestle for Gold vs Ukraine. (20/25 pts)

3 finalists from day 1 with 1 out (Ahmad Javan!) and 1 in repechage. A great day, but USA also has 3 finalists and their other 2 are in the Bronze medal matches, so they have a strong lead. We need to outperform them in day 1 medal matches + have a very strong showing in day 2. Our day 2 wrestlers are very strong on paper: Khorramdel at 61kg (2021 Cadet Gold), Aghaei at 74kg (2022 Junior Bronze), Alizadeh at 86kg (our weakest guy), Azimi at 92kg (2022 and 2023 Asian Junior Golds, remember the name) and of course Masoumi at 125kg (easy Gold). I expect 3-4 medals from day 2 group, and Azimi and Masoumi to win Gold.

Day 2 FS

61kg: Khorramdel techs Spain then beats 2023 Asian Jnr Bronze KGZ 15-5 in 1/8 (tough match until Khorramdel got the leg lace near the end), dominates Euro Jnr Silver from Armenia 6-1 and is into the SF

74kg: Aghaei defeated the European U20 champ 6-2 in the first round, then teched Russia 10-0 in the first period and beat GEO 7-1 in QF, he is into the SF

86kg: Alizadeh avenges his loss to the 2023 Asian Junior champ from India who beat him 3-0 in Asians a few months ago with a very tough 2-0 win in the first round, but loses the QF to Romania 4-3 somehow, was deep in a single leg with 20 seconds to go but couldn't convert... Out/repechage

92kg: Azimi techs 2023 Euro Jnr Bronze in 1/8 and Russia in QF, into the SF

125kg: Masoumi defeats Euro Jnr champ 9-1 and techs China and USA. Into the SF

4/5 in SF today, only Alizadeh lost (as expected). USA lost in 3 weight classes - Iran coming up clutch in day 2 again! All our guys in the SF look amazing

57kg: Ahmad Javan is out (0 pts)

65kg: Shakeri defeats Mendez (USA) 5-2 and wins Gold (25 pts)

70kg: Rezaei loses to Shapiro (USA) 11-6 (horrible, 4-0 up then gassed fast) and wins Silver (20 pts)

79kg: Safi gets teched by Tcokaev (AZE) in the Bronze match and is out (10 pts)

97kg: Babaloo defeats UKR 5-0 and wins Gold (25 pts)

80 points for Day 1 wrestlers. USA leads with 95 points.

61kg: Khorramdel lost the SF to Russia 10-9 and will wrestle for Bronze (10/15 pts)

74kg: Aghaei won his SF vs Russia 9-0 and will wrestle USA for Gold (20/25 pts)

86kg: Alizadeh is out (0-4 pts)

92kg: Azimi won his SF and will wrestle for Gold (20/25 pts)

125kg: Masoumi techs UKR in the SF and will wrestle Russia for Gold (20/25 pts)

70-94 points for Day 2 wrestlers. Iran's total will be 80+(70-94) = 150-174 points

Likely range for USA day 2 is 50-70 pts + 95 = 145-165 points total. Will be very close... I think if Khorramdel wins Bronze and Azimi and Masoumi win Gold, we will mathematically win the team title.

61kg: Khorramdel easily techs Georgia and wins Bronze. A great talent. He is still 19 and I would like to see him return to U20 Worlds next year, returning Bronze medalists tend to do very well. He only lost 9-10 to Russia and dominated everyone else. Hopefully he stops growing and can be our guy at 61kg to replace Atri. (15 pts)

74kg: Aghaei got teched 16-5 vs USA (much wider than his 7-9 loss last year) and wins Silver. Mesenbrink shot for the single leg about 20 times and was getting it every time in the first 90 seconds. Aghaei didn't shoot for a single TD until 2.5 mins in. Mesenbrink just too active and Aghaei too slow and couldn't adapt. (20 pts)

92kg: Azimi defeated a giant Kazakh 5-4 and wins Gold. Very good tournament. This guy is in contention for a place on the senior team at 92kg already. (25 pts)

125kg: Masoumi easily wins Gold, of course. A phenom. I would like to see him become 3x U20 World Champ, has that ever been done before? (25 pts)

Iran wins the U20 World Championships FS Team Title! 4 Golds, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze.

1. Iran (165 points)

2. USA (152 points)

Iran win team title. According to Wikipedia Masoumi is still only 18, and his height is 199cm.

I know it’s only u20 but he wrestled amazing. Added some lovely high crotches and knee taps to his game too, looks like he learned from his experience of trying to go upper body against some of these big guys like Munkhtur.

Likes winding wrestlers up as well, making them wanna hit him and give up points for it.

Ahmadi at 55kg is THAT GUY!!

He became cadet champion only last year, and he just defeated the 2022 U20 Silver and 2023 Euro U23 Gold in the 1/8 round! What a great comeback. He was losing 5-0 with around 10 seconds to go and he gets a TD then throws him for 4 more points, winning 7-5 (failed challenge by ROU)

He is only 18 years old, one to keep an eye on

55kg: Ahmadi lost the SF to AZE. I cursed him unfortunately. AZE caught him early a few times. A bit unlucky because in the same final action Ahmadi then turns AZE but challenge is lost. Can happen in greco. He is only 18. He will wrestle for Bronze.

63kg: Mohsennezhad defeats Japan 5-1 and will wrestle for Gold.

77kg: Abdevali defeats Georgia 3-1 and will wrestle for Gold.

87kg: Choubani defeats Nazaryan (returning 2022 U20 Champion) 1*-1 and will wrestle for Gold. Ironically in last year's final Nazaryan defeated Choubani 1*-1.

130kg: Hedeyati destroys Egypt 8-0 with 5 step outs, 1 caution for fleeing and a takedown and will wrestle for Gold.

4/5 day 1 GR wrestlers will wrestle for Gold tomorrow, and the other will wrestle for Bronze. Near flawless performance!

Most impressed with Hedayati, he’s such a beast.

We have so many elite heavyweights across the styles, Mirzazadeh (25), Yousefi (23), Hedayati (20) and a bunch of younger cadets.

He’s basically already champion touch wood he’s beaten the guy he’s facing in the finals 11-1 at Asian champs.

The Chinese has been on fire this tournament but I agree, Hedayati should be a lock for Gold.

Choubani will have a tough final match against an amazing Georgian. I think Mohsennezhad and Abdevali should win Gold and Ahmadi will win Bronze.

I'm so excited to see the day 2 group. Yadzi is the weakest of the five and will probably lose his first match, but Dehbozorgi, Piani and Akbari can all reach the final (and Miri can medal, IMO).

60kg: Dehbozorgi techs Turkey (U20 Euro Bronze) and beats China 6-0 and then easily techs Japan in the first period, he is into the semis

67kg: Piani beats Hungary 10-2 then beat the Russian who teched Dehbozorgi in Cadet Worlds 2018 6-5! He techs another Russian in the QF in the first period. He is good. He is into the semis

72kg: Miri teched UKR with great parterre attacks then defeated current Euro U20 Champ from AZE 1*-1 in 1/8, but then he got teched by Russia in the QF. He just gave up and stopped defending, really disappointing. Out but can be pulled into repechage

82kg: Yazdi didn't like what I said about him being the weakest of the group. He beats Russia 10-5 in the qualification round then avenged his U20 Asians 6-5 loss to KAZ by defeating him 11-8 (after being down 8-3 early) then easily techs Japan in the first period. He is into the semis

97kg: Akbari (U20 Asian Champ) defeats the U20 Euro Bronze 6-1 (GER) but then gets easily pinned by Russia in 1/8... Out but can be pulled back into repechage

Well that was a disaster.

55kg: Dehbozorgi got teched by a very bad Indian. He will wrestle for Bronze

67kg: Piani lost 9-4 to an Egyptian. He will wrestle for Bronze

72kg: Miri is pulled back into the repechage

82kg: Yazdi beats ARM 4-0 and will wrestle for Gold

97kg: Akbari is pulled back into the repechage

Only 1/5 makes the final, 2/5 will wrestle for Bronze and another 2/5 in the repechage. All can still medal but that was really disappointing from Dehbozorgi and Piani. Ironically the guy I said was the worst was the only one to make the final (Yazdi)

55kg: Ahmadi gets teched and is out. But he is only 18 and has a bright future. (10 pts)

63kg: Mohsennezhad wins by tech fall and wins Gold. (25 pts)

77kg: Abdevali beats the Euro U20 Champ 1*-1 and wins Gold. (25 pts)

87kg: Choubani lost 4-1 to Bolkzadze and wins Silver. He didn't deserve to win, he didn't even try to score in the parterre. (20 pts)

130kg: Hedayati easily beats China in 2 minutes and wins Gold. (25 pts)

4 medals (3 Gold and 1 Silver) and 105 points from the day 1 wrestlers. Incredible performance.

Hedayati and Mohsennezhad are serious talents. Weird moment after Hedayati's win when the ref ran towards him screaming that he couldn't pray on the Iranian flag on the mat lol

Hedayati goes 32-0 in terms of points, teaching everyone conceding none. He’s perfect. Next step is u23. Excited to see him at that level.

Annoyingly our best performers are always in weights where we are already strong

60kg: Dehbozorgi wins his Bronze match 9-0 in under a minute and wins Bronze (15 pts)

67kg: Piani loses 3-2 to the Euro U20 Champion and is out(10 pts)

72kg: Miri lost 5-1 against the 2022 Cadet World champion (GEO) for Bronze. He gave up with more than 20 seconds left, really pathetic. (10 pts)

82kg: Yazdi got teched 9-1 in the final vs TUR and wins Silver (20 pts)

97kg: Akbari got teched in the repechage match 13-3 and is out (4 pts?)

Horrible from the Day 2 GR wrestlers.

c. 59 points + 105 from day 1 = 164 pts

Iran wins the U20 GR Team Title, along with the U20 FS Team Title, the U17 FS Team Title and the U17 GR Team Title
