You start looking at the daunting task of getting a wrestler noticed by Colleges (No matter division) and realize it is a monster task. Does anyone have any pointers on how to go about getting a wrestler (without one of the big names) noticed by College Coaches? There are tons of websites and pay services out there but do they really work? Can it be done without there help? It is very frustrating. Please podt if you have any experience, advice, or any information that may help. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that have had these same questions. If you can, please help!!

Many times you have to recruit yourself.  Send the colleges you are interested in videos and go to their websites and fill out their questionnaires for potential athletes.

One other thing to realize is that most colleges that do give out money have very little of it to hand out.  If you get offered money, that is great, but don't make your choice just based on who is going to give you the most money.  Look at getting academic scholarships as those are easier and more plenty.

It actually is not as difficult as it may seem. Most athletes will come up with an athletic resume which informs the coach about their athletic as well as academic success'. It also should include things such as birthday, height, weight, address, phone number, and email. Personally, I would trust the books that they have out more than those websites. Though I do recommend berecruited.com. It allows you to easily get information about the team and program. Fasweb.com is a great source for finding out about colleges themselves, as well as scholarships.Registration is lengthy but well worth it. Make sure the athlete registers with the NCAA Clearinghouse as soon as possible because it takes awhile to get approved. The easiest way of all to  get your name out though is by filling out prospective athlete questionaires on the teams website. Thy are short and will give the coach basic backround information. I hope this helped.

Here is a link to the NCAA web site that lists all D-1 schools that offer wrestling, they also have a list there for D-2 and D-3 schools, with links to each schools sports web site. Many of the schools have recruite me questionaires that you can fill out to get them some basic info. you should have in advance someo of the following items.

High School name address, phone number

High School counselor, and coach name and number

act score, sat score

registration to the clearing house and registration number

list of accomplishments

club coaches, and numbers

academic information, class rank, GPA

Number of siblings, age of siblings, name of siblings

Some of these sites ask some rather interesting questions, be prepared, and have all of the above info ready to go in a way that you can access it rather quickly.

Sounds like you should be looking at Division II, III or NAIA. These are all good 4year colleges. There are approx. 220 collegiate wrestling progams NCAA at all four levels (approx 100 D I) NON D I competition is a little less rigorious but by no means for the timid. As someone advised first start by looking at what you need academically. There really is no wrestling money per say, unless you are a national contender. Academic assistance is out there. We put a highlight DVD of my sons most exciting matches together with a three fold brochure listing all his athletic  and acedemic accomplishments as well as his personal interest and training philosophy. The non D I schools put more emphasis on acedemics and this is your real bread and butter. We focused on acedemics and my son is currentlly at a non D I school wrestling and getting a great education. GOOD LUCK. You are on the right track.

As for the videos you send out, don't send out a "highlight tape"...Send out a tape with 4-5 matches on it and if at all possible a match in which you lost to an opponet followed by the match you beat them.  This is great for college coaches and they really like seeing how a wrestler betters himself.
