  1. Here's the data you're looking for. I came up with 74 in tech but did that by roster and not by bracket, so perhaps 2 of the 74 ended up forfeiting...not sure. The 2023-24 wrestling sectional realignment swapped 4 teams from the former Arsenal Tech sectional (Mount Vernon Fortville, North Central, Lawrence North and Lawrence Central) with 4 teams from the former Southport sectional (Indianapolis George Washington, Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter, Indianapolis Crispus Attickus, Providence Crystol Rey). In evaluating these changes, it appears they may have been made in error or without critical information. The participation rate is polar opposite among the group of schools moved to Arsenal Tech vs those moved to Southport. If we put last year’s teams into the new Arsenal Tech sectional, there are 74 total wrestlers in the sectionals. This creates a scenario where: · 4 weight classes would have 4 or less wrestlers. This means 16 of the 56 advancing wrestlers, 29%, would advance to regionals without having to wrestle a single match. · 1 of those 16 spots would be a forfeit that advances instead of a wrestler. · As many as 17 additional wrestlers, another 30%, only have to wrestle one match to advance. ~60% of wrestlers either don’t have to wrestle or only wrestle once to advance. · If a forfeit moves on to Regional, a wrestler will qualify to semi state without having to wrestle at regionals. Also, if there are weight classes with 4, there are no alternates should a wrestler drop out. If we do the same thing with the Southport sectional: · There are now 120 wrestlers in this section. Almost double Arsenal Tech. · 80 of the 112 (71%) regional qualifiers from last year’s two sectionals are now in Southport. 56 wrestlers advance to regionals, so 24 of 80 of last year’s regional qualifiers would be eliminated at the Southport sectional. 24 more skilled wrestlers would lose a week of their season and the experience/accomplishment of advancing to and competing at regionals. Regional and semi state implications look negative. · For example, if we look at last year’s 220 weight class at the New Castle Semi State, 6 out of 8 “blood round” wrestlers from last year would now be in the same regional. This means that 2 wrestlers who completed in the “blood round” (one round away from making it to state) would have been eliminated at the regional level. We checked drivetime and the change in these sectionals creates longer drivetime for schools overall, with significant greater milage for schools moved to the new Southport sectional without saving the schools moved to Arsenal Tech significant mileage. The four schools added to Southport will literally drive by Arsenal Tech on their way to Southport. Our coaches, wrestlers and parents are uniformly unhappy and frustrated by these changes as they can’t see how they are good for our student athletes or Indiana wrestling. 2. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Z-kU1WnOoD4TRarfnqJHthTxV1cZ6edpm-ImSfZMyCM/edit?usp=sharing The good news is forfeits dropped from 1114 or 3.64 per team to 939 or 3.04 per team. 3. Obviously we can blame Covid for some, but this year's data is nasty. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tHx0uRTBMvLc638E0UYQckEJvYtfCaArgJqRCwBOZEk/edit?usp=sharing
  4. Adding super HWT would seem odd to me after just lowering the upper weights (220 to 215, 195 to 190, 182 to 175, 170 to 165 and 160 to 157). I'm sure forfeit data was used to make this change but seems like lowering weight classes will only encourage cutting weight.
  5. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1etZh6xp5Gbys7egM_59lOyMm4JNnYfVCreapm2QNO3M/edit?usp=sharing Here is the data from this year. One disclaimer that this was done AFTER sectional this year instead of before sectional. That means forfeits from kids missing weight, skin issues, etc were added in. In previous years it was done before sectional weigh-ins and lineup changes, so thus I would expect some increase in forfeits. 2017 Data https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1krfJOL8VwuS33WW30KkI6rtHlL-lhu2QhNUcp4Hw8AM/edit?usp=sharing 2016 Data https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Bt2uxpHPNLmdWOknWd_9So1K68Z6yYRbYCz69CcjhiU/edit?usp=sharing 2015 Data https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Nxe-jTfTxHGlr4Btu8kERBYGZ9FgoDThy-E0n9WClx8/edit?usp=sharing
  6. Here is the ever popular(really I hate saying that) report of forfeits at sectional. Past forfeits Year FF Schools Avg 2011 617 312 1.98 2012 681 312 2.18 2013 649 312 2.08 2015 740 308 2.40 2016 860 308 2.79 2017 845 310 2.73 https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1krfJOL8VwuS33WW30KkI6rtHlL-lhu2QhNUcp4Hw8AM/edit?usp=sharing It looks like for the first time in a while forfeits are down, hopefully this trend continues.
  7. You say something like this every time, but never suggest anything but maybe we class individual state. Again... more stats and no solutions. SMH How many small school kids win IHPO? Maybe we class it. It's a VERY important tournament. Nobody is saying that there isnt a problem. Nobody wants programs to fold. I clearly think that classing individual state will result in a bad product. It's just an opinion. But.. suggesting that people not supporting classing individual state is resulting is leading programs to fail and that those people dont care is not accurate. Classing is not up to me. I just realize that it is most likely not going to happen. AGAIN, less stats and more solutions. We HAVE to work with the current hand that we have been delt. @CFleshmanI dont think that its a work harder mentality for the kids (which is another argument that needs to die). But.. I do think it is a work harder mentality for us coaches. Meaning that we have to figure something out and create more opportunities and solutions. BTW.. the forfeit data this year was awesome (as we are dealing with Covid). Hopefully it continues to get better.
  8. This is usually pretty telling of the "state of wrestling" here in Indiana. So here it is! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Bt2uxpHPNLmdWOknWd_9So1K68Z6yYRbYCz69CcjhiU/edit?usp=sharing Couple interesting stats Only 10 1A teams have a full roster at sectional Out of the 102 3A teams, there are only 90 forfeits with 62 teams having a full team
  9. That information is posted for this year here. For past years the information is on this site some place. https://indianamat.com/index.php?/forums/topic/59700-forfeit-data-for-2021/
  10. Per the NFHS data we have lost 2000 wrestlers in Indiana. https://members.nfhs.org/participation_statistics or if you want to see forfeit data also https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Knl68lI1LvTmzACIn5kK3Uq3KCHTLEATGFHE_TdciEU/edit?usp=sharing What would you attribute the decline in participation in wrestling to? Obviously the decline in basketball was due to class basketball.
  11. I will say the south Dearborn data is skewed a little. It says they have 11 teams, the 11th team being Oldenburg academy who doesn't have a team therefore every weight class is listed as a forfeit that gives the section 14 additional forfeits. We're not sure why track had them entered they haven't had a team since 2018.
  12. Click on this search and a bunch of Y2's past posts will be included in the results: https://indianamat.com/index.php?/search/&q=forfeit data&quick=1&search_and_or=and
  13. Wait, but how do you have their forfeit data then if they're not entered in a sectional?

  15. This may not support anyone's theory of liking the new weight classes as we had an increase in 64 forfeits this year. 2011 2012 Weight FFs Perc Weight FFs Perc 103 - 85 27.24% 106 - 84 26.92% 112 - 68 21.79% 113 - 73 23.40% 119 - 57 18.27% 120 - 50 16.03% 125 - 43 13.78% 126 - 49 15.71% 130 - 46 14.74% 132 - 26 8.33% 135 - 35 11.22% 138 - 28 8.97% 140 - 35 11.22% 145 - 25 8.01% 145 - 32 10.26% 152 - 27 8.65% 152 - 33 10.58% 160 - 33 10.58% 160 - 32 10.26% 170 - 46 14.74% 171 - 32 10.26% 182 - 50 16.03% 189 - 33 10.58% 195 - 61 19.55% 215 - 47 15.06% 220- 64 20.51% 285 - 39 12.50% 285 - 65 20.83% Total- 617 14.13% Total- 681 15.59% Here is the link to the data from the past two years. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0At9kk8BWi5ZUdFVpd09mUU12S2ozTW1JSmRxYUMxa2c
  16. http://www.indianamat.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/forfeits.htm Note this is not including the Calumet sectional. 312 teams enter the state series this year 83 or 26.6% forfeit 103lbs 67 or 21.47% forfeit 112lbs Of all the forfeits 103lbs accounts for 13.79% and 112lbs accounts for 11.13%
  17. I did Ohio based on forfeits. Ohio has 583 schools with wrestling and MANY smaller rural schools. Here is the data. Here is the breakdown of forfeits by weight in Ohio this year. 106 233 113 211 120 205 132 140 138 131 145 127 152 120 160 133 170 162 182 185 195 192 220 215 285 204 Total 2258 Per Team 3.873 583 Teams The current proposal basically combines the current 182lbs and 195lbs weight into 189lbs. If a team has either a 182 or 195 they are counted as now having a 189lber and the teams with neither will now forfeit the new 189lbs. This would eliminate.... 270 forfeits. The average per team would still be 3.41. If we would attack 106lbs and lets say we combine 106 and 113 into a newly formed 110lbs weight class. Same as above in combining each weight and assuming all 113's that do not have a teammate at 106 could make 110, we would eliminate.... 311 forfeits. That means we would still have 3.34 forfeits per team. If we would go further and combine both scenarios we would only eliminate 581 forfeits. Thus again we would still have 2.87 forfeits per team. In conclusion, in Ohio we are basically in the same realm that we would eliminate almost 600 opportunities to make the forfeit statistics look better by only half a forfeit.
  18. It's time for Joe's statistical analysis.... This is under the assumption that the NFHS wants to eliminate a weight class based off of the forfeit issue. Here is the breakdown of forfeits by weight in Indiana this year. 106 110 113 103 120 94 132 59 138 52 145 41 152 50 160 49 170 51 182 69 195 73 220 75 285 63 Total 889 Per Team 2.877 309 Teams Data updated in this section The current proposal basically combines the current 182lbs and 195lbs weight into 189lbs. If a team has either a 182 or 195 they are counted as now having a 189lber and the teams with neither will now forfeit the new 189lbs. This would eliminate.... 107 forfeits. The average per team would still be 2.53. Based on the data we would need 34 195lbers to cut to the new 189lbs. If we would attack 106lbs and lets say we combine 106 and 113 into a newly formed 110lbs weight class. Same as above in combining each weight and assuming all 113's that do not have a teammate at 106 could make 110, we would eliminate.... 154 forfeits. That means we would still have 2.37 forfeits per team. Based on the data we would need 51 113lbers to cut to the new 110lbs. If we would go further and combine both scenarios we would only eliminate 261 forfeits. Thus again we would still have 2.032 forfeits per team. In conclusion, the elimination of ANY weight class will have very little affect on the number of forfeits. If every team in the state brings in two additional wrestlers we would do more for the forfeit issue than eliminating a weight class. At best we would eliminate 300 opportunities in order to save 154 forfeits. This is not worth it to cut that many opportunities to salvage a better looking forfeit statistic.
  19. Team State classification has been finalized after confirming forfeit data and classification-eligible schools following sectionals. There will be 35 schools in 4A (including the new Elkhart High School Lions), 60 in 3A, and 91 in each of 2A and 1A. See the attached pdf for full lists. Team State Classification 2020.pdf
  20. If any team in the state with an enrollment under 2000 students wishes to qualify for the 4A Team State finals rather than their assigned class FOR THE NEXT 2 QUALIFICATION YEARS, you must declare your intention by sometime this Thursday, January 30. Please email atroyer@swissmail.org to request your move to 4A. No one will be allowed to move classes later than this because the qualification process is a competition. Some have asked if teams will be able to make decisions when they know if they're good enough to qualify in 4A. The answer is "no." They must declare where they want to compete so the competition can proceed fairly with teams clearly assigned to their classes as the individual tournament progresses. If teams are on the fence about your ability to squeeze into the small field of 8 in 4A, I would just remind people that the new 3A division of 8 will be very, very strong. Current IndianaMat #9 Hobart, #10 Franklin, #11 Harrison WL, #14 Mishawaka, #15 Columbus East, #16 Roncalli are all going to be in 3A if they elect to stay. Floyd Central, Bloomington South, Northridge, Plainfield, Mt Vernon-Fortville, East Central, Columbia City (possibly 2A), among numerous others, are all having strong seasons as well. If you're not confident of qualifying in 4A and you want to be at Team State, see how 3A plays out this year and move up next year if you feel 4A is where you belong. See below for enrollment numbers we will be using (all forfeit data here is 2019...2020 won't be finalized until wrestling begins on Saturday). Again, 4A means 2000+ students. The 3A/2A break would have been at 1100+ students this past year with our new 4-class system. The 2A/1A break would have been 522+. Final classification for this year will depend on forfeit numbers of each team on Saturday (only teams with 7+ wrestlers are classified). 2019 Classification, Team State Duals.pdf
  21. Antknee is right. That's 2019 forfeit data, but it is the enrollment data the IHSAA and us are using for classification for this year. This season's forfeit data will be finalized after everyone steps on the mat this weekend.
  22. Linked here are the procedures for qualification for next year's Team State event. The only rule change is the increase in the number of wrestlers required per team for classification consideration. It is now 7 instead of 3. Classification will be finalized after forfeit data are finalized this weekend. IHSWCA Team State Duals Qualification Procedures 2019.pdf
  23. We have at least one completed version of all sectionals done, but we've got some cross-checking to do. As soon as we can cross-check 75% of sectionals with second versions that are coming in, we'll post something. Part of the issue, too, is that we have to be sure we've got all the forfeit data fully verified to ensure where all teams fall in their classes. Should be at least an unofficial scoreboard update posted later today (Tuesday). One tidbit is that it's looking like at least 35 of the 310 teams won't reach the 7+ wrestler threshold for classification, meaning we're headed toward only about 91 teams per class (compared to about 100 in the past when we only required 3+ wrestlers). About 7-10 teams that would have been 3A in the past system will be in 2A and 10-15 that would have been 2A will be in 1A. We'll post all of the classification data here as well once it's verified fully.
  24. Rules aren't changed from last year except for the one that was announced in all the IHSWCA minutes in the spring: teams have to have 7 guys to be counted toward classification. Classification won't be finalized until all the Forfeit data is finalized after this weekend, as always. No other rules have changed in the last 4 years. Sorry for the delay with Categories. We want them to be as accurate as possible, so we do the tabulations late in the year. We're all volunteers with full-time jobs, so if a key cog is consumed by his full-time life, we sadly get set back. I finally got the last pieces of what I needed at 2am, so we're pushing through to get it done this morning. Good luck today, everyone!
