  1.

I just don't think it is broken. Again, we have an excellent tournament. I am NOT concerned that only 16 kids call themselves SQs....it is an elite group. Not to mention, the lessons learned in wrestling are learned regardless of your finish (Sectional Qualifier or State Champion).

Let's ask Oak Hill who had 10 semi-state qualifiers if they want class wrestling ( seriously, I have no idea if they would like it or not). I would guess their school is buzzing with support for their 10 qualifiers (essentially these kids are viewed as champions by their coaches and classmates whether ANY of them qualify for state or not).

    Just my opinion.

  2. Everything considered I think the worst trick of fate for this years ticket round:

    Merrillville 160: #3 Schurg (CP) v  #5 Sopko (Hobart)

Both have wrestled at the field house 2x, both previous state placers (Shurg 2x including finalist last year), state ranked ranked 3rd and 5th, both only have 2 losses on season.

Both are seniors that have had stellar high school careers, which for me, is what really separates this ticket round from others.

I would have to agree with you.

At New Castle, Chastain vs. McKinney is another brutal matchup.

These four wrestlers definitely belong at Bankers Life next weekend.

  3. The more I look at the bracket, Mater Dei got some rough draws. Luigs on the same side as Konrath, Egli on the same side as Hudkins, Johnson on the same side as Molloy, Bassemier with his one loss in the ticket round...

    Conspiracy? Bracket-gate 2015?

Could "WrestleMan" have tampered with the brackets? Lol

Seriously though, there are going to be some great matches Saturday.

    Good luck to all combatants!

  4. It's definitely not perfect BUT I respect and appreciate the people who put in hours and hours of hard work to give us a great tournament.

I think (and hope) it is on track to become a very popular and profitable event that will interest the IHSAA again. This will allow us to have extra weigh-ins and ideal tourney date (after individual state) and officially recognize class team state champions.

My only complaint with the current system is that it puts senior-laden teams at a disadvantage. It also affects successful programs (Perry's, EMDs, Mishawakas, Yorktowns, etc.) who have state quality caliber kids wrestling JV. I understand the two "at large" teams voted in help mitigate this discrepancy. But again, it is a good alternative that lots of people have dedicated time and energy to promote when IHSAA yanked the team tourney from us.

  5. ^ Random draw I believe. There should be 4 Regional champs; two on each side of the bracket. Hudkins and Egli just randomly selected to share one side.

    Same as State.

It would be nice to seed semi-state and state tournaments. Many state championship matches (between the best 2 wrestlers) have happened in the state semi-finals. Once saw it happen in semi-state in the the round to go (Rosbottom vs Jankowski).

  6. Warren central looks to be peaking right about now (e.g.

Murphy, McKinney, Pruitt, Herrick, et al).

Not surprising given the depth and talent on the coaching staff.

Add Goddard to the list as Regional champ.

Another great match with Diep and Murphy.

Pruitt avenged Marion County loss with a major decision.

  7. Did Beech Grove turnout drop due to Super Bowl Sunday?

I think it was down significantly from last year.

Given the number of kids this year, is there any chance Whiteland would move the tourney to the High School next year? Or at least a gym that has actual bleachers and can accommodate more than 3 mats.

  8. I see the Ferguson situation playing out exactly as you've described it. At 120, I'd definitely want to take a 1 seed up to state, though.

I understand wanting a #1 placement vs a #4 at state tourney under normal circumstances...however, as you mentioned, these are not normal circumstances.

I have to believe a guy like Ferguson is not worried about facing anyone on Friday night at state (or Saturday for that matter).

To paraphrase another Indianamat poster...he just has to qualify for the tourney and then "go for broke".

You gotta love this time of the year.

  9. First season as a head coach at a 2a school...

    Started with 12 kids

    -2 torn ACL's from Football

    -1 high grade strained MCL

    -1 Fractured back (football hit)

-1 broken arm (fell off roof)

-1 kid dropped out of school

-1 kid ran away from home

-3 kids quit because they "lost the passion" for wrestling...

Entered sectionals with 2 kids left

    Hang in there, Coach!

Lots of extenuating circumstances beyond your control. I am sure your commitment to the sport/team was not lost on your two remaining guys.

I see you got one of them through to Regional. Keep up the good work and good luck this weekend.

  10. If it was a big enough issue to take him to the doctor it was a big enough issue to have the form filled out

Not necessarily true...and no need to add insult to injury.

It could have been a small lesion, as he suggested. He thought he had done his due diligence by going above and beyond to get a doctor's release.

Again, I hope the young man was not a senior and lives to fight another year.

  11. Curious, how a wrestler can have a signed form from a Doctor stating this small red bump on his upper arm is not ringworm states it is "erythematous and is not contagious" and the head Ref for New Haven Sectionals won't let him wrestle because "he thinks it's ringworm".  How can a ref overrule a Doctor?  Especially at Sectionals, the event they train all season for and he was ranked in top 4 for.  Being it was not ringworm the official ISWA form was not filled out (didn't need to be).  Ref commented "IF, it had been on that form he MIGHT have considered it but he still thinks it's ringworm".  This spot was examined on Wednesday, January 28, 72 hours prior to this event.  How can a ref with no medical training override a Doctor? Just looking for comments or advice

That is a tough break. Sorry to hear that. Hope he isn't a Senior.
