  1. Yes a lot of top officials look at everything not just shots but it is the inexperienced officials that rationalize their stalling call with just shot counting and verbally express that to the coaches. The coaches then use that same rationale to try and get a stall call. Same as a wrestler not coming off the hips. While this can be stalling it does not define it. There are several moves where the wrestler on top can turn his/her opponent without coming of the hips. Backing up, Not taking shots, staying on the hips are all good indicators for stalling but are not absolutes.
  2. I heard some refs talk about a clinic a few years back talking about counting shots. I think inexperienced refs rely on this thought process too much. What are the wrestlers doing in neutral? Avoiding the 10 ft circle? Blocking the other wrestler? Simply defending the other wrestlers offense without countering with offense (ie snap down/go behind)? Thats what the refs should be looking for. Some kids are not good at shots and that is not their offense. Have you ever heard a coach say "Stalling on Red!!! He hasnt attempted 1 throw!" So why do we hear "Red hasnt taken any shots"
  3. Stalling is and will continue to be the contraversial call in wrestling. I have heard Coach A yell at the refs to call stalling when the opponent is riding the hips then yell at the Ref during the same match for calling stalling on his kid for riding the hips. That being said, if a kid is pushing the action for 5 mins and gets the lead and in the last min the other wrestler starts to push the action I have to wonder if there shouldnt have been a stalling call on the kid losing during the first 5 mins of the match.
  4. Ludicrous sounds like a strong word. And what are we teaching our kids if we argue a wrong call against our wrestler but sit idly by when a wrong call favors the same kid. Doesn't make much sense does it.
  5. I got to thinking about some of my favorite state finals matches and realized that a lot of the state finalize matches are 2 great wrestlers that don't want to make a mistake and the score ends up being 3-2 or 5-3. Obviously there have been some high scoring matches but those are usually when a more dominate wrestler just scores a lot of points. And I can't remember a finals match when both wrestlers really went after it and a lot of points scored. Anybody have any come to mind?
  6. I think it is hilarious that there was a pretty long thread about how refs dont call stalling enough and now all the posts about stalling being called too much. I once heard a coach yell at a ref to "Be Consistent" and the ref quickly replied "Be Objective". Maybe it is only stalling when the other wrestler doesnt wrestle.
  7. It takes passing an open book test, attending a rules interpertation meeting which is offered online, attending a certification clinic every other year and officiating 5 varsity matches to officiate the state tournament series. You can get 5 dual meets in 1 saturday. So I wouldnt say having a full time job is a very good reason for not officiating. Im pretty sure almost every official out there has a full time job. Bottom line if your bashing officials on this board you must think you can do a better job so get your license and help solve the problem.
  8. I think you are right... I would have thought Will Hill would have qualified before his senior year but 171 was loaded his sophmore and junior year at New Castle. Dan Pleak Cath, Deon Brimmage Pike, kid from Greenfield Central (cant remember his name) and a couple others.
  9. Tsirtis vs Malloy i think would be a lot closer than most people think. I still think Tsirtis wins but by very very close. Malloy was dominate this past weekend and and Tsirtis needed overtime last year to win a state championship.
  10. Sliga and Stevenson will meet in the semis.
  11. Im not sure what taking the IHSAA to court would do. The rule book says that corrections can be made prior to the next match starting. So the IHSAA has a process in place to correct errors. If such process were not followed I do not see how the IHSAA would be liable. Plus that would be a lot of re-wrestling!!!
  12. I agree. Duncan wrestled great against a a very very good wrestler in Lovejoy.
  13. I would like to see the college rule about out of bounds in HS but that won't happen because of mat and gym sizes in HS but my post said nothing about changing a rule just what we teach our wrestlers. I've seen kids only take shots on the edge of the mat only to be called out of bounds when if that same attempt would be in the middle of the mat it would have been a takedown. Essentially eliminating the refs "horrible" out of bounds call.
  14. Seems like a lot of people have complained about this so how about teaching the wrestlers to wrestle in the middle of the mat rather than on the edge. This takes a refs out of bounds call out of the equation.
  15. How pigtail matches are at a sectional like Hamilton heights? I know there would be 4 per weight class if every team had all 14 wts but how many teams are full?
  16. FYI... it can take as little as 7 years to do the state tournament as you need 3 sectionals before a regional (you can do 3rd sectional and 1st regional in same year), 3 regionals before 1st semi states (3rd regional and 1st semi state in sameyear), 3 semi states before 1st state (3rd semi state and 1st state in same year). If an official does the tournament series and gets to a certain level then gets out for a couple of years then that official can move back up to that level moving up 1 level each year back.
  17. Craig Peters from Pike was jv in 1993 and was a SQ at 140 in 1994. Pretty impressive considering he wasn't in a big program behind state caliber wrestlers as a jv.
  18. Your proposal is a good idea but it would also depend on how each site runs the rounds. Sometimes two mats are removed after the 2nd round which makes the tournament run longer. If 4 mats were used until the finals/3rd4th place matches then I think it could work. Also, I wonder what coaches think if semis and consolations are run at same time or if the new ticket round was run on 4 mats. A team could have several wrestlers competing at the same time for a chance to go to state. Rd 1 56 matches on 4 mats (basically a dual meet on each mat approx 1 1/2 hours) Rd 2 56 matches on 4 mats (approx 1 1/2 hours) Rd 3 56 mathces on 4 mats (approx 1 1/2 hours) Rd 4 28 matches on 4 mats (approx 45 mins) Rd 5 28 matches on 2 mats (who cares its the finals!!!) or Rd 1 56 matches on 4 mats (basically a dual meet on each mat approx 1 1/2 hours) Rd 2 56 matches on 4 mats (approx 1 1/2 hours) Rd 3 28 matches on 2 mats (approx 1 1/2 hours) (semis winners bracket) Rd 4 28 matches on 2 mats (approx 1 1/2 hours) (consols) Rd 5 28 matches on 2 mats (approx 1 1/2 hours) (consols) Rd 6 28 matches on 2 mats (who cares its the finals!!!!) You could combine Rd 3 and 4 on 4 mats but would probably need to wait for each wt class to be done before starting the next so coaches dont have multiple wrestlers and officials can rotate. This would add atleast 30-45 mins. This might not add matches but could add 2+ hours to the day depending on how it was run. That being said I like the idea.
  19. Nick Hardwick all pro center for the chargers was in the finals and never played HS football. Jeff Saturday also was a very good HS wrestler in Georgia (I think).
  20. Best Cinderella: kid from north posey in the mid 90s. He was the first state champ in the history of the school in any sport Best Offense: Cashe was always moving forward. Ryan Pribble had great offense too. Best Defense: Williams from Evansville Central. That kid could scramble.
  21. Imagine this Team A is beating Team B 36-30 in a dual meet. It is the last match and wrestler B is putting it to Wrestler A when coach A calls the ref to the bench arguing that wrestler B should have gotten NF points for that last move. And coach b argues that wrestler A was never in criteria. Obvisiouly coach A wanted a tech fall and coach B wanted a pin but I had never seen a coach argue for points for the othe team. Lol
  22. Absolutely awsome post! I love the saying "doing the right thing is often very simple but rarely easy".
  23. There does need to be a lot more information but some arguements are based on the HS kids taking responsibility for there actions and respecting the authority's (admin in this case) decision. Isn't it the same for the MS kids. Shouldn't they take responsiblity for their actions (not running when told to do so) and respecting the authority of the varsity wrestler? Some may say that a varsity wrestler does not have authority over a MS kid but it is the same principle. However you look at it it's very unfortunate for everyone involved.
  24. I believe the bylaws state that you cannot wrestle below your minimum wt during the state tournament season. There is no rule to prevent a wrestler from wrestling below their minimum wt during the year. Also there is a physician appeal and parental approval to go below minimum body fat %. During weighins whatever weight class a wrestler makes he/she is eligible to wrestle that weight class plus the one above. During the state tournament season the wrestler must meet the weight reduction requirements to wrestle their wt class.
