AAU officials were given the correct information on Center Grove's enrollment. It was their choice to place Center Grove in Division 2. You would have to ask them what their reasoning is. We assumed it was because we were a first year team and lacking experience at the national level. We also felt that they were trying to balance the teams between Division 1 and Division 2 since there weren't as many this year as in year's past.

Congratulations Lowell. It can only get better from here.

Where should the ISWA find officials if not in the clubs? Are there officials out there that no one knows about?

Alonzon Shepherd from Jeffersonville won all three styles at Cadet 105. He had 13 in his bracket for Freestyle, 7 in his bracket for Greco and 7 in his bracket for Folkstyle.

Mishawaka did a great job putting on their first tournament in twenty years. Everything ran smooth and any minor issues were taken care of with a smile. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your tournament.

I was watching Jason wrestle in the semi-finals. He was far more technical than his opponent. It was as if Jason had a plan and he was on autopilot. What a phenom!!

Your are only hearing 1/2 the story. College coaches are at both places. Great competition can be found at either place as stated above. While I was in Iowa, I saw many college coaches that I recognize from Fargo from working on the pairings platform. College coaches are only looking at Juniors and Seniors and a few underclass phenoms. As MacDaddy said, just get out and wrestle.

The year my son went out to Virginia Beach to wrestle, he had to miss one or two days of school. If your school has incentives for perfect attendance (skip a final, etc) this hurts your son's opportunities for these incentives. Virginia Beach wrestles the under classman during the week and reserves the weekend wrestling for the Seniors. Of course, this is by design for the college coaches. This year in Iowa, the Cadets and Juniors had to miss at least one day of school since they wrestled on Friday - maybe 1 1/2 days if you consider travel time. I believe both tournaments are two day tournaments, it's just that Virginia Beach starts in the middle of the week and Iowa starts close to the weekend.

Perry Meridian Wrestling Club is hosting a vertical paring clinic in preparation for their upcoming ISWA Greco/Freestyle Tournament. The clinic will be led by an Associate pairer from the ISWA. I understand that Mooresville, New Pal, and Center Grove may be sending some representatives to attend this clinic. If you were unable to attend the ISWA beginner's clinic the night before PeeWee through Novice Folkstyle State, this would be a great opportunity for you and your club.

We were discussing this same question tonight while finishing up a day of wrestling in Iowa. The competition is comparable. We find more midwest and western states wrestling in Iowa (Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, North Dakota, etc) and it looked like in Virginia Beach there were more wrestlers from the east coast. College Coach are at both venues as well. We decided the only difference is the weather.

This cuts both ways. I think Boom444 put it best. There is a place for both. I believe it starts with focus on what is in the best interest of each one of the individuals involved and the quality of the team will follow. This is not easily done. Sometimes individuals are sacrificed to benifit the team and with that I have problem. The individual hard work of a wrestler can be squandered by a few lazy a's who won't put out for either team or individual success. On an individual level you get out what you put in without having to carry the slackers. You work hard, you win, you earned it!! If you look at Nationals Team these are all guys who work hard individually and come together as a team. They are also the guys who advance to the next level. This scenario is the best of both worlds. Like I said before it starts with motivated individuals. Sorry Y2, my son got better by going to Camps , clinics, national tournaments and wrestling school (ie--Overtime in Ill). They were classmates not teammates. No offense intended here but most high school kids do not see the big picture, therefore it is difficult to depend on them in wrestling as a team concept. Hope this all makes sense. If not zing away. I agree. To some, wrestling is something they want to do for 3 months a year and for others it's a 12 months a year. How many HS teams had their whole team competing at ISWA Folkstyle state a couple weeks ago? I bet there were none. How many kids were the lone representative of their HS team at ISWA Folkstyle state? I bet quite a few. If this is truly a team sport shouldn't they have all been there working to get better for next year? I understand that Mater Dei had their team at ISWA Folkstyle State except of course the seniors. If I remember correctly, there were 83 wrestlers that registered at the Evansville Regional Weigh-ins site and 40-42 were Mater Dei wrestlers.

Thanks for the clarification. Now I understand the reasoning behind the pushout rule. My son continued to wrestle freestyle and greco until he graduated and in his college wrestling you will find him using some of the freestyle moves to get himself into a position of scoring for folkstyle competition.

I agree, when the rules changed the numbers started to drop off drastically. I think that coupled with more folkstyle opportunities have contributed to the Olympic styles drop-off. My son really enjoyed greco and freestyle until the pushout rule was introduced. He said the focus was one who could push who out of the boundaries. It wasn't about skill anymore. He continued wrestling those styles, but he wasn't as exited about it like he was before.

Tell it, brother!!! As a teacher, it is painfully obvious which students get support from home and which students have parents who either don't care or don't know how to support them. I agree. It's not just about what you do on the mat. It's mainly about what you do in the classroom. A college isn't even going to look at you if you don't have the grades or the SAT scores. My son made it to state one time and placed third. He was a Cadet All-American and a Junior All-American at Fargo. His sophomore year he lost to Cashe Quiroga in the round to go and his senior year he lost to Camden Eppert in the round to go otherwise things may have been different. He is now wrestling at the University of Chicago. Yes, this is a DIII school, but it's all about academics and my son is wrestling in college. DIII is no bunny walk either. You have wrestlers there that have decided to put education first and wrestling second. It is a competitive division. My son is getting 85% of his college tuition paid for by grants and aid from the school because of his grades. Don't bank on being a three time state champ or state placer. You never know what kind of draw you will end up with each year. Work hard on your grades and character. It's a win-win situation no matter what happens with your wrestling. It is a work ethic that will be with you for life.

This weekend at State since they are wrestling two age divisions on Saturday and two age divisions on Sunday, only one gym will be used and staging will be easier since everyone will be in one gym.

There are 89 Teams in D III competing in 9 regionals. There may be some independent teams but I am not sure. I believe there are a few more wrestling progams at D III schools which are not listed in these 89. At 7 Reionals only the Champion recieves an automatic berth to the NCAA Nationals and some wild cards are awarded according to the strength of your regional. These wild card spots are decided by a committee of the Head Coaches from that regional after the regional tournament has conluded. The two toughest Regionals Iowa and Great Lakes each recieve automatic berths for champion and runner-up with Iowa(The Toughest Regional) recieving a total of 33 and Great Lakes a total of 26. Since there are ten wt classes Iowa recieves 13 wild cards and Great Lakes 6 wild cards.Furthermore you must wrestle for true 2nd from the wrestleback bracket When it is all done you will have 11 auotmatic berths per wt class plus wild cards . This means you will have at least 1 wild card per wt class but you could have 9 or more if a wt class where that strong. Just to be an NCAA Qualifier at this level is no small feat. For example at 125 in the Great Lakes Regional Nationally Ranked #1 #4 and #11 were there and as you can imagine they finished in that order at the regional #11 (if I have read this right) Did not get a wildcard bid. You must remember rankings are arbitrary he was on the bubble and got bumped. Now that is exclusive. You are going to have to really work hard if you want to be an All American at this level! Jimmy placed 6th which we felt was exceptioal as a freshman but he knows he has a long way to go if he is to reach his goals.
