SIACfan I took it to means compares to the average chance of advancing wrestlers to state from the starting field at Semi-State. He was saying by getting 5 though that would be 67% better than the odds would say should happen for a team in general. Not the actual % of the 12 on the MD team that advanced. I didn't crunch the numbers to verify, but that's what I took his variables to be.

Not that there is many in general, but Daniels is one of the better Judo locations you will find around. Kenney would have got some solid Judo training/competition (throws and some submission) when he was training there.

I know of a decent size gym at a relatively accessible southern location that could probably host a qualifier. We'll just go ahead and take a Regional too so that the mats can be set up for it.

We really wont be getting full wrestle-backs. The IHSAA thinks it takes to long and the pay out isn't great considering only a few alternates ever get called up to the next round. Giving the alternate to the highest sectional placer at least provides a wrestler who has beaten a couple competitors so far in the state series, plus it doesn't take up any additional time. Seems like the simplest fix, but the IHSAA is content with the current set up since it still puts the same number of butts in the seats for the next round. I guess the good news is at least we have alternates so someone has a chance to wrestle another week and get some experience.

The simple fix based on final Sectional placement is talked about in a different thread. But until the IHSAA agrees it more useful to the tournament there is no fix.

Sucks for those out. I'm glad some kids are getting another chance, but I'm just not a fan of the way alternates are determined. Most alternates end up winning only 1 actual wrestled match in Sectionals and none and Regional. While several other wrestlers finished with a few more Sectional wins and a higher sectional place. It then again the IHSAA just wants a set of butts in the seat they don't care too much which one it is. Hopefully the alternate that did get in can put up a great fight and show they are capable of wrestling at that level. Great experience for most of them who will continue next season.

Until the bracket changes or is announced by one of the effected coaches I'm not sure it's worth putting names out yet. Those effected that are supposed informed have likely been told and the rest will know by Saturday. As far as where the replacement goes, the alternate moves into the #4 spot and the rest of that regional shifts up until the spot is filled.

Well if they ended up at the same weight that other Lee kid from #TheCounty is no slouch. I'd say that would at least be a challenge that probably wouldn't end in a techfall. How about we just say Joe would likely see more gains from what the competition he would have through the Nittany Lion WC than by competing in-state.

From what I know that family has always had a pretty clear path of what is best for them, so I'm sure whatever decision is made is what they feel is best for Joe as a person, student, and athlete. Good Luck to Joe and Matt tomorrow, as well as, wherever the journey takes Joe next season.

Maybe not if the entire state entry fee is paid at the qualifier level by all competitors. Having qualifiers could draw in more competitors due to: The initial shorter drive and less initial travel investment. The more reasonable competition level with a shot to get a state seed rather than risk a random draw. A the qualifier allows more prestige from being a state qualifier. If there is enough draw at the qualifiers at the full state entry fee then their should be the same money coming in as before to state, as well as, the funding for the qualifier locations too. It may not inscrease the final bottom line any but they maybe happy with the same final take-in win a far shorter and more organized day at state for everyone.

For the Qualifier it is a 4 pound allowance but that includes weighing in wearing your singlet and shoes.

With Evansville being stuck in the corner of the state, it seems like there maybe enough viewership to make this economically useful (depending on price-point), if the equipment was available to film the mats. I know they have to make ends meet to help pay for the Ford Center, so a paid video link through Trackwrestling seems like it could help increase some of the money coming in. Although, the IHSAA maybe the sticking point here if they would want a big chunk of the video revenue too.

That is true, but they have a large number of players to sub-in and out of the game at all time to ensure that one player having a couple errors doesn't eliminate the entire team from the competition. Same for about any team sport. Most individual sports multiple people to move on based on best scores (gymnastics), times (swimming/track/cross-country), or round (golf). Wrestling only issues is we are not able to compete against all other opponents at once, so wrestle-backs are the closest option to competing against the field that we have. Really most are only asking for wrestle-back to help ensure the random draw doesn't interfere with determining who is actual the best 4 to compete that day.

I'm gald the MattM alternate plan proposed in circa 2000 is finally starting gaining steam. Although I've mention in the event of a tie it should go to the person who came from the regional winners sections. Logic being they would have came from the slightly tougher sectional. But your plan also has some logic too it unlike the current one of just filling spot with someone who may have only even won 1 match in the entire sectional. But the IHSAA isn't as concerned with finding the best alternate since it is a low number group every year. This version is a quick way to find a good alternate option without having a wrestle-back to figure it out.

Spelling is correct. Nice Job. The Crossface Cradle did result in most of his career pins. His brother has a great one too. However, Curt ended up beating his opening round state match against Elkins using a hammerlock/arm-bar turn to pin. He may have got a cradle in during his placement match though. It wasn't a great pick to choose down when you had period choice. I'd throw in the the Richey brothers from Brown County for having some nasty cradles. Especially, Mitchell who was the the older but smaller of the two.
