wrestlinggods got a reaction from Coach G in Jared Williams
Jared,
I want to say Congratulations on a GREAT HEAD COACHING Career Avon, LN, & Zionsville!! You coached numerous State Placers, State Champs, HS All Americans, HS National Champions, NCAA Div. 1,2,&3 wrestlers, Nationals Qualifiers and All Americans. You were the only Head Coach during the IHSAA Dual Team State era to take 2 different Schools to the IHSAA State Championship match (Avon, LN) both finishing 2nd....Never could win the big one (Ha Ha)!! There are many more accomplishments you have achieved in your career, but those are the ones that counted the most & that I remember!
I wouldn't be the Wrestling Coach, Husband, Friend, or Father I am today without having you as a friend & mentor! The true greats in any sport are the ones who give back, and leave it better than when they got it. You have done a tremendous job promoting our sport, growing it at every level, at every school you were a HC. I have truly enjoyed every second coaching with you at LN (memories I will never forget) and the battles coaching against you (even though our wives hated those matches) HA HA!!!! You always bring the best out of not only the athletes you coach, but the opponents you coach against. I am going to miss not seeing you on Saturdays, it will not be the same!!!! Enjoy the 1-0 record against me, you will have it forever!!!
I can't wait to see you in the Hall of Fame, with all the other great coaches who have given countless of hours away from their families, to do good for others in this sport. Enjoy the extra time with your little ones!!!! I know you will keep giving back, see you on the Pee Wee circuit!!

wrestlinggods reacted to bsisson in Live vs Drilling
Live drilling is a little different than what we consider sparring. Sparring we go about 75% and always move through positions. Live Drilling is something I picked up when Reggie Wright was one of my coaches at IU. I thought they were miserable and would always prefer wrestling live, hence why we now incorporate them.
You should be finishing at match speed but instead of simply cutting your opponent the guy getting takedown has to roll over and stand up. Same guy does takedowns the entire time. We usually go :30, 1:00, 1:30, 2:00, 1:30, 1:00, :30. The intensity is often dictated by how quickly the guy getting takedown gets up.
Once one guy goes it is the other guys turn. We will do it where 1 guy does the entire pyramid then the other guy or where we alternate and each guy does the time.
I hope this helps. It gives the feeling and conditioning of match speed but is also way lower risk of injury.

Many local clubs have been decimated because most of their kids are at academies instead of the local club. Then they shut their doors and there is no where for the beginners to start unless they want to get a baptism by fire at a local academy.
The academies are great for your top level kids, but the beginners and others that aren't that level don't benefit as much. Kids that can't afford the academies are also hurt when they don't have a local club to attend either.
Sometimes we tend to forget about the kids that aren't the top ones in our room.

wrestlinggods got a reaction from Coach Coop in All State Honors??
I think you are looking into this a little to much. If your top 8, you get an IHSAA State Place winner medal, which means you are an "All-state" athlete in wrestling.
The IHSWCA has a banquet the day after Individual state and all the "State Champions" in each weight class are invited to be recognized as well as the Hall of Fame inductees, and the top 3 teams who placed in the IHSWCA team competition, which is gone now.
There is also Academic All-state which is given out by the IHSWCA, by grade level, I don't know the requirements for that.
Hope this helps.

The Principal at Daleville HS is Eric Douglas, a 2-time IHSAA State Runner-up in wrestling at Valpo, an All American at Purdue, and was a Assistant Wrestling Coach at Lawrence North 06-11. The Assistant Principal is Hank Carley, former Assistant Wrestling Coach at Warren Central 06-14. I know Hank set that up for the girls to sing and I was blown away by their performance!!! Daleville also had their 1st ever State Placer in any sport this year, Corbin Maddox 7th at 195. Great weekend for the Bronchos. Both are Great friends of mine and I made sure to let them know to tell those Girls what and awesome job they did this weekend!!

Come on with the "Transfer for athletic reasons" chatter, just plain stupid! If Jimmy takes a new job and is going to relocate his family there, well Tristan is going to move along with his mom and little brothers. That is what families do. Congrats Tonte!
