  1. Regarding your question as to why the wrestler is not credited with a loos in a forfeit: No wrestler is entered in the match officially when a weight class is forfeited, so there is no one to credit the loss to. It doesn't matte whose name was written in the score book originally. The official results apply only to whoever took the mat, in this case no one. If a team forfeits a weight in one match, but enters a wrestler in another match at that weight it is usually for either strategic or safety consideration. I've seen coaches hold out an inexperienced wrestler who is supposed to face a state caliber opponent because they want o avoid a potential injury. I've also seen them move wrestlers because they feel they have a chance of splitting the two matches where they would lose both of them if the leave the lineup intact. It usually comes down to what the coach feels is best for the wrestler or the team.
  2. Mr RankingsGuy - I noticed that jarred Brooks is listed as being from Warsaw. I believe I read on this site that he has transferred to a different school.
  3. Blane Culp was hired as the new Columbia City coach. Congratulations, Blane.
  4. Careful, picking Garrett could get you banned by Y2 so they can stay unnoticed.
  5. I know Bishop Dwenger uses the one from Preferred Educational Software and seems to like it. They have a mat-side scoring option. Ac uses a spreadsheet Coach Currie developed.
  6. I got an unconfirmed report that Kyler Kearby, Randy's son, will be the new head coach at Bluffton.
  7. Many of you who have been around Indiana wrestling for a number of years would remember Jim Bassett. He was the original scorekeeper for Adams Central and also worked several state finals as well as being inducted into the IHSWCA Hall of Fame as a contributor. I am sorry to say that Jim passed away Wednesday afternoon after battling Parkinson's for several decades. I spent a lot of hours next to Jim at scorer's tables and in the stands and lost a good friend.
  8. I'm not sure of the actual year, but it was in the late 70's/early 80's, I think. He only stayed a year or two and then returned to Bluffton.
  9. I've seen several situations where a wrestler is 1/10 over and the coach and/or referee tells him to "drop his drawers" to make weight. If I read this correctly they will no longer be able to do that.
  10. Craig broke his leg in that match. A bad way to end your senior season when you're a returning state qualifier. The matches aren't as intense now, mostly because AC has been able to challenge Bellmont in a few years. And the attendance has dropped from both schools. The best one was at Bellmont when they had to open the upstairs bleachers on both sides to make room for everyone. Over 3000 fans attended that one.
  11. Let's see, I've never wrestled a match in my life. Ac started wrestling 2 years after I graduated. My only coaching has been with the club when my sons were trying it, but neither stayed with it past fourth grade, so i guess I fall in the lovers of the sport category. My cousin wrestled and I started going to watch him. My freshman basketball coach was AD by that time, saw me there, and asked me to help with a tournament AC was hosting. That was 1975. My cousin lives in Chicago now, the AD retired, but I'm still there.
  12. To get back to the original question: When basketball had a final four for the state championship the losers of the semi-finals got medals even though they didn't play a consolation game. Not sure if they were third place or finalist medals like Razo mentioned, though.
  13. I have no problem with a referee calling a flagrant unsportsmanlike if he is trying to protect the wrestler, but to refuse to review the call or hear the opinion of others involved in the match is arrogant beyond belief. Here's a suggestion- IF the official involved is selected for state again next year have every coach there scratch him. Let him watch the finals from the mat side, but not be in charge. If you don't feel you can trust his judgment you shouldn't let him referee your match.
  14. Also, the rankings are the top 20 regardless of semi-state. Some semi-states had more than 4 ranked wrestlers in the same class, so one of those would be eliminated.
  15. I worked at FW SS so my only costs were for 1.5 gallons of gas for the 60 mile round trip. Gotta love those hybrids. But, I share 2 season tickets to the Colts with my Mom (2 seats for half the games instead of 1 seat for all of them). I try to take each of my 4 kids to 1 game a year for time with Dad. Compare even the Coliseum costs to: $148 for the two tickets per game $20 parking though you can park on the street for free if you get there 5 hours before the game $12 for lunch before the game (I normally don't buy anything at the game) $45 for gas for the 250 mile round trip That's over $200 for one day, but my oldest daughter went through a divorce she didn't want this fall and her first game ever (she used to let her ex go instead) was the Patriots game. My oldest son, now 21, spent the 2 hour drive asking me about things the plans for his future when he finishes college in 18 months. It was the first time I remember us talking "man-to-man" instead of "Dad-to-child". Sometimes the time spent is more important than the money spent or even the event attended.
  16. Talked to the tournament managers Tuesday and they said start time will remain at 9 AM.
  17. I think they will. There seems to be two situations, 1 2-day tournament and a team tournament that is delayed. Mr. Cox only referred to the delayed tournament when he said the semi-states do not qualify.
  18. I believe that in 1985 they knew by Thursday that the finals could not be held. The IHSAA made teh alternate arrangements and announced both the rescheduling and the new venue at the same time. In this case know one knew whether schools would be able to make it until Saturday morning, so there was no time to make other arrangements. Also, the state finals in 1985 was run by the state, even though there is a host school. My point was that Jay County wasn't responsible to make other arrangements, the IHSAA was. In this case they were either unable or unwilling to do that.
  19. Duck_and_Run, I can understand and share your frustrations. I'm sure Trent McCormick does, too. I don't know him other than what I've seen at wrestling tournaments, but he seems like a class guy. I'm sure he understands that having a visual position in the wrestling community makes him an easy target for frustrations people have about changes needed in wrestling. I've been involved with wrestling tournaments over 30 years, maybe before you were born and I've never seen a situation like this. I've seen kids eliminated on bad calls or by letting their own anger get the best of them. I even remember a coach having his wrestler take an injury default after a slam when he was losing and obviously able to continue. But at least in those situations the wrestler was allowed to participate. I keep wondering what I would do if it were my son or my school. Like a lot of things, I'll never know until it does affect someone I'm closer associated with. I hope the uproar that has resulted from these decisions will prevent the same thing from happening in the future. Keep supporting you teams and wrestlers. If they were cheated by the decision this week they'll need your encouragement and support even more.
  20. Matt is right. I like to watch how many regional winners don't make it to state. There are usually 8-10 at Fort Wayne. You still have to wrestle 2 good matches.
  21. Just took 90 minutes to drive 35 miles from Huntington to Monroe. Probably could have made it quicker but we we had two vehicles trying to keep together. I had a Ranger, but didn't slide. Roads aren't nice though. Worst problem is blowing that causes occasional whiteouts.
  22. TV weatherman in FW said this morning FW should only get 1-2 inches of snow and maybe 3 in Indy. He called radio reports of up to 7 inches irresponsible, but they can't afford their own meteorologist and probably rely on weather.com or similar wights for their forecasts. Any way it happens I never worry about forecasts. Too much can change in a day or two.

  24. I've also seen coaches who couldn't build a program at one school and then have success at another. Communities have a personality and sometimes it takes finding a coach whose personality matches the community. I think that's why you see a lot of coaches going "home" to build successful programs.
