  1. What about RONCALLI? They return a solid team.

I am from a 2A school, so I'm not sure I know enough about these schools to comment, but I would think of the vote in options schools Roncalli should be a lock and we are discussing the last one in.  I agree Harrison is young (only losing 1 senior), but there performance at ECSS really makes me wonder how they would stack up in duals against Da Region teams on the list (or Hobart for that matter).

  2. As far as no wrestle-backs, it certainly makes for some exciting rounds but does not ensure proper placement of all wrestlers. I am OK with it as is, but wouldn't argue against wrestle-backs either.

This is my issue of 'proper placement'.  I think the analogies to games like basketball and football where one little mistake, one big play, one player having an off night etc.... do not end a game are not really a legitimate comparison to wrestling. Also, we do not then say we placed all of those other teams (other than in the polls).

I'll use Reitz as an example @ the State Tournament.  He got upset in the 1/4 finals, fair enough Luigs earned the win.  But the fact that now Reitz can only do at best 5th is not an accurate placement (or at least we don't know if it is b/c of the format).  I could certainly cite examples like Cummings (out in the first round- to the  new state champ, is Cummings not even a top 8 placer?) and Van Horn (same question).

Dtaylor- I agree this makes it exciting for the fans (especially if you have no vested interest in the kid who got 'upset').  I hear 'Russian Roulette' is exciting too. But I don't know how exciting it is for a kid who put in hours and years of hard work.

  3. Come on now

I'm just kidding. But after reading all of the conversations in the 3A post.... It just cracks me up.  I think you guys try to create a fair system and be as transparent as possible.  No system is perfect, but your effort to do the best possible job at picking the teams seems to be underappreciated.

The reality is the top 5 or so teams picked in 3A, 2A and 1A are the top contenders.  As you drop much below there you will always have debates.  It's like that weird basketball tournament the NCAA holds in March, or the NCAA football playoffs.  Wherever you draw a line, there will be teams close to it on either side.  On one side they're happy and on the other side they're not.

  4. You obviously haven't been to team state where 1A fans are definitely the loudest and probably the biggest crowd.

That's because our team hasn't gotten in because you have rated our sectional tournament incorrectly based on the depth and number of teams.  If you subtract the two worst GENIUS ratings and use a double factorial multiplyer we would always get in.

    Just kidding.

  5. If I can ever get ahold of the guy in charge of doing that stuff we would like to host something at Fairfield one night a week.

This might be close enough that I could bring some guys from the Culver area.  Depends on the day and time, but please post if you decide to go ahead with it.

  6. I don't know how accurate this list is but it's what I pulled up.... Supposedly there is one at Culver academies on Monday nights

Yeah, I did check that listing.  It says it will be 'updated' by the end of the month.  I assume the CMA one will start, but have not heard anything solid on times etc.....  I was also looking for a Thursday night too.  Thanks for the feedback.

  7. Does anyone have an updated listing of dates and times for RTC's or other training opportunities?  (I am especially interested in Northern IN).  We live in Culver which is not super close to anything  .  I am taking some guys to Jimtown next Tuesday, but looking for some other nights as well.

  8. We could have a battle for the ages JMILL Vs Joe.....

I dunno who I would go for in that battle JMILL is a Brownsburg guy so #paintrian in a posibility but Joe is a roughneck and you never know when that mixer will pop up

    lets get bets going

*THIS POST IS PAID FOR AND BROUGHT TO YOU BY #THECOUNTYTMZ, PRESIDENT: TEAM GARCIA, MattyB-Tresurer

I'm slightly disturbed by what happened when I hit the 'show' button.  Perhaps there should be a warning on those.  Plus I'm still waiting for the Fabio Jr. v. Bobo Brazil match up!  Do we have photos of them in singlets too?

So happy I opened this post :)

  9. Each of the four schools have something to offer the duals.  It is going to be a very difficult decision.

I would agree with that. That is why I am wondering HOW the "Committee of Power" obtains the 'resume' so to speak for each school.  I'm not 'in the know enough' to even know where to send the cupcakes. JK

  10. Apparently it is much more of a 'hot topic' on the 3A post, but it looks like the "Committee of Power" votes for the remaining 2 slots to fill.  If my understanding is correct, in 2A they are choosing between Lawrenceburg, Western, Jimtown, and Culver Academies.

I am not a fan of lobbying via webpost, but is there a mechanism by which the "Committee of Power" collects any information from the schools?  Or is this vote purely by what the "Committee of Power" already knows from this year, gut feelings, historical data...? Just curious.  Also wondering when this vote takes place and schools are notified. Thanks.

  11. Curious since you have first hand experience - among your small division Colorado schools, what was the quality and participation level?  Is Colorado sending a load of high school wrestlers from the smaller division schools to college wrestling programs or would you say the small school participation and quality (and 3-sport participation) is similar to current status in Indiana?

Those are all good questions, but I don't have the stats on those.  Unfortunately that was over 10 years ago now, so I am not sure it is worth more than my impression.  I can tell you that the quality varied more by weight class than by purely school size.  By that I mean the weights where there was significant depth, the quality was good all through the classes.  I had a State Champ @ 220 one year who I would have killed to see wrestle against the 5A State Champ those 2 were clearly the best 2 kids in the state (we were a 3A School; classes were 1A/2A combined, 3A, 4A, 5A and I believe a school was classified as the same for all sports). So we were on the smaller end of things, but not tiny.

  12. I coached in Colorado for 10 years before coming to IN and we had a classed system (4 classes).  I do think kids got more exposure by being State Qualifiers or State Placers (kids that would have only made it to SS here); plus we had full wrestlebacks.  I had a kid lose first round to a returning State Champ and get back for 3rd.  It is a joke that we say we place even the top 8 kids the way we run the individual State Tournament right now.  We pick the best kid (on that weekend).  I know we are talking about classing here, but in the topic of EXPOSURE, 1 class coupled with our lack of wrestlebacks definitely hurts our exposure.

Personally, I'd opt for 2 classes AND wrestlebacks.  I'd leave the option for any school in the smaller class to 'bump-up' if they wished.  Also, for the "true champion" crowd, I'd run a finale where the classed State Champs squared off.  It would be an interesting test to see IF the large schools do or do not have a 'quality' advantage at the top end....

Of course other than on a message board nobody is really asking my opinion :)

  13. Whether it's PR like you want to say, it still works.

I promise you a college coach would be more interested if you are a state qualifier in a classed system than a semi-state qualifier in a one class system.

    http://indianamat.com/stuff/statebreakdown.html

This is not updated for a while, but this is a general look at who has class and who doesn't.  Hint...almost everyone has class.

I agree PR helps.  I mean that's what marketing is.  So I think from an EXPOSURE standpoint your argument is valid.  I know my son wrestles up in MI in the off season and is competitive with or beats 'state placers' but is only a SSQ here. I'm just saying that you have to back it up to actually make it @ the college level.

  14. Those interested in this topic might also find the following data interesting.  This is from 2016 and has NCAA D1 qualifiers by STATE (inf you scroll down a bit) http://www.flowrestling.org/article/40254-by-the-numbers-2016-ncaa-s#.WKxzM_LGpG0 and here is one from 2014 http://news.theopenmat.com/college-wrestling-news/2014-ncaa-division-i-qualifiers-by-home-state/36062.  I am not motivated enough to cross reference this data with whether or not a state has a class system or single class....  But, based on the number of posts on these topics maybe someone will :)

  15. Kids will have added state qualification and placement added to their resumes earlier. Our kids are competing with others in neighboring states that are achieving those credentials earlier. It is not easy to market yourself compared to those other state's kids.

This might be a more reasonable argument about the class system than its potential to boost numbers.  But in the end it is just PR to say you are a State Champ etc...  Your skills have to back it up.  I was wondering how many classes different states have and found this article on InterMat form 2014.  Those interested in this topic might find it interesting. http://intermatwrestle.com/articles/13237 . Also brings up the issue of "How many classes?"
