I was told to ask this question here. I'm looking into the history of NCAA wrestling, and I can find lists and histories of winners and All-Americans all over the place. But what I'm looking for is a history of participating teams, themselves. I can't find anywhere a year by year list of what schools rostered a team. I know there are teams that are now defunct, teams that lost their programs and brought them back, etc. I don't know if there's a list or a database anywhere that has that info, but I was told that if anyone knew where that might be I'd find them here. Thanks in advance, enjoy the matches tonight!

The D1 schools that fielded a team? Or the D1 schools that participated in the NCAA tournament?

I ask because in the early years travel was an issue, so not a lot of teams went to the tourney. There were other years where it was an open event. And then there were the qualifier years.

I have assembled a number of data sets that I use for putting content on the intermat forum. One of them is my best estimate of all teams by year. DM me with specifics of what you are looking for.

Mendez did well yesterday, I think takeaways from that match is that he can get off bottom, can continue to push the pace, and wrestles the entire match. He will still be at the top.

Yep. While I did not see the match, I do not feel like a true freshman taking a 1 point lose to a ranked wrestler is any great cause for concern. Sanderson's record survives another year.

Alan Grammer from Evansville Reitz is perhaps worth a mention as well.   A DII national champ in '85 and '86 for SIU-Edwardsville, he also placed 3rd and 5th respectively in those two years in the DI tourney.

He lost to Jim Jordan from Wisconsin in the '85 semis and Jordan went on to win the title at 134 that year and also repeated in '86.  I heard he's involved in politics now.  🙂

Nice catch. I missed that they used to be D2. I will add that to my data.

Jesse almost beats gross… what make you think he can’t bang with fix and rby? Jesse is coming into his freshman college year more seasoned then French fries at a fair.

For me it is the combination of 1) being a freshman, and 2) being a Buckeye. Neither of those are known for getting off bottom. While his freestyle results against top guys are impressive, until I see how he gets off bottom, I will have my doubts about any true freshman.

BTW, RBY credits none other than Nick Lee for schooling him from top position when he first arrived at PSU. I think his quote was, "Dude just hammered me." Hopefully Mendez is getting that kind of intro to college folkstyle in the anOSU room.

Why did you change your name? To confuse us or are you in the times protection program ? 😀

    grest to have you here

I changed my name there, not here. I was on this message board first. I challenged my brother in law to figure out which username was mine and he got it on the first try. So when I found out about themat I decided to use a different username. He guessed that one right away too.

For completeness, both names are accurate. When I came on this board I was brand spanking new to the sport.

  7. A little late on this one, but I keep some stats on NCAA wrestling and I just updated my list of all-time leading individual scorers at the NCAA tourney.

Among Indiana greats, Nick Lee tops the list ranked 74th with 74 points (go figure). Next is Andrew Howe ranked 92nd with 71 points, and finally Angel Escobedo ranks 167th with 63.5 points.

All of these ranks/totals are using the current scoring rules. Though I do not think that impacts any of their totals.

How many people are surprised by the way these 2 wrestlers college careers ended up going? I am not surprised by Lee but I feel Chad never reach his potential. Was Nebraska the right choice as far as wrestling goes for him?

    Wrestling is hard.

B10 guys win 60% of the titles with less than 20% of the schools.

Assuming all roster sizes are equal, B10 kids have a 3.2% chance (1 in 30) at a title sometime in their career and all the rest have about a 0.5% chance (1 in 200).

There is B1G and then there is PSU.

Half of that 60% goes to one B1G school.
