  1. The crazy part of it is they all lost to DCC's backups. (At least according to the lineup on TW) DCC's starters are: Derek Gilcher (145 - 1st at Brecksville, Flo #18) Cameron Amine (152/160 - 1st at Brecksville, Flo #2 at 160) Kevon Davenport (152/160 - 2nd at Brecksville to Donnell Washington, Flo #7 at 152). That's some serious depth! Indianapolis Cathedral vs. Detroit Central Catholic 1/12/19
  2. I actually get what you were asking and didn't take it as a shot at Baumann or IndianaMat. But I don't pay too much attention to posting patterns so I don't question Y2's response (call me Switzerland?). It is very odd that a JV wrestler gets so much credit, but Baumann has earned it. He performed in Michigan and despite going 1-3 last weekend, showed his future is bright. I mean how many guys get the privilege of stepping up and facing the #s 1,2, and 3 ranked guys in the state in a matter of hours in the same day? Perhaps the question could have been asked differently? I know Doug Annakin would have done so!
  3. That's impressive! Coupla questions..... 1. Was Dundee's only win at 106 Casey Swiderski? If not, where was their only win? 2. Do you know if Stoney Buell wrestled 152 or 160 and what was the result of his match? Curious if he wrestled Rodgers or Slivka. Thanks
  4. Correct.... To clarify (in case you want to use any of this in your rankings key wins/losses) Mater Dei Holiday Classic - 1st Place Win vs. 14-4 Robert Major - Downers Grove South - Illinois 3A (large school) #6 at 145 Win vs. 11-4 Dalton Russelburg - Union Co. - Kentucky #8 at 152 Grappler Gold - 4th Place Loss vs. 3-2 James Whitaker - St. John's - Michigan D2 #2 (at the time), National #8 at 152 (now) & D2 State Champion Win vs. 6-3 Quenten Hall - DeWitt - Michigan D2 #4 & 2x State Placer (6th) Win vs. 8-4 Stoney Buell - Dundee - Michigan 3A #1 & D3 State Champion Loss 6-4 vs. Caleb Fish - Eaton Rapids - Michigan D2 #1 & State Runner Up
  5. Another interesting match with an indirect connection to Mason Parris. Penn State's Anthony Cassar faced Northwestern's Conan Jennings tonight. Jennings is 6'7 and all of 285, one big dude! Jennings beat Mason at The Midlands 6-4. Cassar handled Jennings easily tonight winning 12-2, scoring 5 takedowns. Cassar is REALLY strong. He had Jennings' feet off the ground on at least 3 of the takedowns, including the first when off a blast double, he was able to lift him completely off the ground and up on his shoulder like a sack of potatoes, before returning him to the mat. Cassar and Mason are similar in size and quickness. But Cassar is a 5th year guy with big-time strength. He'll provide a real test for the young Mr. Parris. Parris' real test this season will be a 4 match stretch beginning Jan. 25. Jan 25 @ Ohio State vs. #18 Chase Singletary - Singletary is responsible for one of Mason's 3 losses and this will be a good opportunity to see him rebound and how he has adjusted with more experience. Feb. 1 @ Penn State vs. #4 Cassar Feb. 10 Northwestern vs. #19 Jennings Feb. 15 @ Maryland vs. #6 Youssif Hemida Note: Michigan does not face Minnesota during the regular season so a match up with Gable Steveson will have to wait until the B1G or NCAA Tournaments.
  6. Penn State's Nick Lee with a 16-6 Major decision over Alec McKenna of Northwestern. IU fell to Ohio State in a dual 43-3. 7. I wondered if it was the same Brett Johnson. But the Track Profile said he was from Arizona and didn't have any HS results other than the post-season Perry Meridian Open. I also saw Steven Lawrence with just one match, but wasn't sure it was Bam or not. Can't remember which school. I'm sure there are others I missed, but it makes it harder if Track Profiles have changed or are non-existent. Other than my reasonably decent memory, Track profiles are an easy way to check. Of course, guys with common names don't help either. Ha ha
  8. Mosconi beats Warren 6-1 (?) and Rodgers takes out Fair 9-5 (?). There were some stalling points, so I may be a point or so off on those. I do recall Rodgers jumped out to a 4-0 lead and Fair got a reversal and 3 back points to take a 5-4 lead heading into the 3rd period. Rodgers escaped and got a TD I believe, then 1 or 2 stalling points. Mosconi - Warren was tight and went into OT tied at 1. Mosconi got 2 back points in the first OT, then got an escape in the 2nd OT, followed by a late TD on a desperation throw attempt by Warren to seal the deal. Cathedral ran away with the meet. Not sure of the final score but it wasn't close.
  9. LOTS of results.... Did the best I could, but I am sure I missed a few guys. I included season records, where I could find them via Track or the school web site. 10. I have good ideas once or twice a month! On a separate note: I am updating the thread on the NWCA Multi-Divisional Duals in Louisville last weekend. There were A LOT of results, so I will keep them to that thread for that event. I also included season records for as many guys as I could find. I'm sure I missed some guys and the records may not be perfect. It includes results from SEVERAL programs that include Hoosiers from D2, D3 and NAIA.
  11. I am much better at finding results and reporting them than prognosticating. I'd tend to agree with Maligned and go with 3 or 4. NOTE: I started a new thread for the 2nd half of the season. Please post results and updates going forward there.
  12. I'll start a new thread here to help segment the results rather than having one long thread. Post results or updates here beginning January 9th, 2019. I'll likely create a new thread as we get closer to the post-season so we can discuss conference and national tournaments apart from season results.... Here is a basic recap on the last few posts in the 1st Half thread..... Mason Parris is now wrestling shirtless (red, that is) and defeated #1 ranked Dhesi of Oregon State last Friday night. Dhesi is a 2x NCAA Placer (3rd, 5th) and 3x Qualifier. He took the fall semester off so he could compete for Canada at the UWW World Championships. Mason also won again at Arizona State on Sunday. His unattached results now count and he is 19-3 on the year. He entered the national rankings after losing his redshirt and came in at #7 (Flo) and #8 (Intermat). Michigan wrestles at home Saturday against Illinois. Stevan Micic has been battling an injury, but came back this weekend and won by tech fall in both matches. He is now 5-0 on the season and is ranked #2 (Flo) and #3 (Intermat). Penn State and Nick Lee are back in action Friday and Sunday this weekend, battling Northwestern and Wisconsin. Lee is ranked #4 by both services and undefeated on the year. He has a potential battle (rematch) with Chad Red coming up when PSU hosts Nebraska on Sunday Jan 20. Red has a challenge this weekend facing Northern Iowa and 8th ranked Josh Alber.
  13. Yeah, that's where rankings can get tough. I was expecting 10+. We'll see shortly. He'll have 3 matches to get his Big Ten feet wet in the next 8 days, against unranked opponents from Illinois (1/12), Michigan St (1/18) and Purdue (1/20). Then it gets interesting as Michigan visits Ohio State (1/25) and a rematch with #18 Chase Singletary looms , followed by a trip to Penn State and #4 Anthony Cassar (2/1), and at home against Northwestern (2/10) in a rematch against #19 Conan Jennings. There should also be a battle against #6 Youssif Hemida of Maryland (2/15). He'll definitely be tested before heading into the Big Ten and NCAA's! Note: Intermat's rankings came out late last night and Mason came in at #8 there.
  14. Chad Red won by Major 10-1 over Northwestern's Yahya Thomas getting himself back into the rankings at #20 on both Flo and Intermat. Potential match with Nick Lee looming on Sunday January 20. Nick Lee and Penn State is back in action Friday 1/11 against Northwestern. Nebraska is back at it Saturday 1/12 against Northern Iowa where Red will face Josh Alber ranked #8 by Intermat.
  15. Things didn't go Mater Dei's way this weekend, but I don't think it's fair to be disappointed and they have holes that were known about going in. In the WC match, they had two big swings.... The first was when they inserted Fitts at 152 and bumped Dickens up to 160. The DQ by Fitts gave WC 6 pts (1 later deducted) and cost MD the 3 team points gained from Matt Lee's match. That's an 8 pt swing and could have been an 11 pt swing had Fitts come back to win. He was only down 2-0 and had ridden Coleman the whole 2nd period. Not only was that a huge swing, but it seemed to take the wind out of their sails somewhat. The other was the Baumann - Pierson match. They were locked in a tight battle tied at 2 and Baumann was holding his own and attacking more. Pierson caught him and flipped him to his back when they were tied up, giving WC a 6 pt win. Pierson did the same to Cole Ross last year at State on Friday night. Kudos to him for great moves. But I wouldn't bet on it happening to either guy again. So in a match MD had a solid chance at winning or at the least losing a decision, it turned into a -6. I get it. You have to wrestle all three periods and that's why we wrestle the actual matches because these things happen. But those were two momentum swings that could have easily gone MD's way and the whole outcome could have changed. MD's biggest issue is with their upper weights. They are simply outmanned from 195-285 and at times at 182 as well. From 182-220, all of these guMys could qualify to wrestle at least one class down. I believed their 220 in Michigan weighed in at 192. They just aren't able to hold up to the pounding from the bigger guys even when they are able to put up a good fight. I believe their experience level is very low as well. Not an excuse, but it is what it is, and you know that going in. Personally, I felt like their #2 ranking was a bit high due to just that. But they have some studs and are deep. Alec Freeman went 4-0 on the day beating 2 ranked wrestlers #s 4 & 9 Brody Baumann, their JV (albeit he's very good) got indoctrinated facing the #s 1, 2 & 3 ranked wrestlers. Not sure on the health of Cole Ross and when he is expected back. Blake Boarman goes 4-0 The Egli brothers went a combined 3-5, losing all 5 to ranked wrestlers. Blaine Mayer won 3 of 4, losing only a 5-3 decision in a match he had to have a fall for his team to win. Matt Lee goes 4-0 beating #s 3 & 5 Eli Dickens goes 4-0 and beats #1 Rodgers Macartney Parkinson went 4-0 with 3 falls and a win over higher ranked Logan Hart. There was a lot of good for the Wildcats this weekend. Just not enough to overcome the swings against WC to get to the final.
  16. I definitely agree that muting the mics would be a bad thing. Overall, none of the issues were major, though it did get annoying when adults were there and talking off topic. It was distracting. The only way to help make it better is to give feedback, which TrackGopher asked for. A fix is probably putting a sign at the table, reminding volunteers before they sit down (do you have a quick meeting with all volunteers before the event starts?) the mics are there, or periodically visiting tables and listening to see if a whispered reminder is necessary. It won't be perfect, but it can be better with some subtle tweaks, but those don't come without feedback. As for the cursing, it's annoying. It has nothing to do with what kids hear daily, it is more that if you are paying to watch an event, it just comes off as amateurish if mics are picking up cursing from volunteers at the table. I have a terrible potty mouth at times and its not that I am offended by it, it's just not what you want to hear when you are trying to pay attention. The whole argument going on about parenting kids is just dumb, IMO. People have different opinions, and that really has nothing to do with it. Adult or kid, if your paying for a service, that's not what you want to hear. I'd call it unprofessional, but I think that word would be taken too literally and everyone would remind me these are volunteers.
  17. Mason enters the Flo rankings at #7 today. Intermat rankings should come out soon.
  18. Mason entered the Flo rankings today at #7. Higher than I expected, but he is certainly gathering respect quickly.
  19. The biggest issue I had, was just that there was a ton of idle chatter, not related to wrestling as if those at the table didn't know it was mic'd. I did hear a few curse words, but it could have been from people behind the table in some instances too. And the guy, during the Carmel (?) vs. Mater Dei match that was complaining that David Ross didn't win Mr. Football and blamed all of the small schools for ganging up to vote for Jack Kiser from Pioneer like it was an unfair conspiracy or something. I get you like David Bell. But your whining does not belong on the wrestling feed.... Also, there was a good bit of cheering for wrestlers coming from girls at the table during the WC - MD match. It wasn't too bad, but all things being equal, I'd prefer not to hear "Let's go XXX, get one" (meaning takedown) 30x a match. Still a minor issue in the grand scheme. Lastly, not sure if everyone else had issues, but the feed was good for the most part all day long with little lagging and freezing. Until the final match on Mat 6 (MD - Cathedral). Had to refresh probably 10-15x during those matches, far more than I had to the rest of the day combined.
  20. Mason Parris back in action tonight at Arizona State. Parris wins with a fall at 5:56. He was leading at least 11-3 at the time (I looked away for a few seconds) with more than 2 minutes of riding time. The win puts Mason at 19-3 on the year. Looking forward to see where he enters the rankings this week.
  21. Eli Dickens going 4-0 on the day, including a Major (bumped to 160), Tech Fall, Fall and a 4-3 decision over #1 ranked Elliott Rodgers. Zeke Seltzer 4-0 on the day, with two Tech Falls and two Falls. I'm sure there are more, but those stood out in addition to what you already mentioned.
  22. As shown, it was 2-0 Coleman with TD in the first period. Fitts rode Coleman the whole 2nd period. Just a few seconds into the 3rd period, Fitts was down. He was reached back and under and grabbed Coleman's foot. As he did so, the referee blew the whistle and ran in to stop it calling potentially dangerous. As that was happening, Fitts pulled up on the ankle, which put a ton of torque on Coleman's knee. If it was after the whistle, it was tenths of a second after, but he did pull up on it pretty hard. Coleman laid on his back in pain and the referee pretty much immediately called flagrant misconduct. The video is available on Track if you paid for the event. Check it out and start it at 7:15 mark. I'm not sure if it was just seen as illegal in pulling up on the leg, or if it was judged to be after the whistle. To me, the whistle was blowing as he started pulling up, so I'd be hard pressed to buy that part of it. The sound isn't great. I'm not saying it was a right or wrong call here, just trying to describe it as I see it, after going back and watching the video several times. Interested in others opinions.
  23. Eli Dickens, MD 4-3 dec over Eliot Rodgers, Cathedral - Nice win for Eli.
