  1. Funny you should ask. The IHSAA governing body & Bobby Cox, always the progressive organization, and following their cancelling the Team State, exhaustively researched and prepared a training program and video for IHSAA officials. It will debut this weekend. Following this, they are going to get around to addressing rules like 'blood time' vs. 'crap your singlet' time for wrestlers that accidently poop their singlet at Semi-State, run out of 'crap time', with the one caviat that Bobby Cox can magically come out of the stands and reverse the call.
  2. Exactly - he looked pretty good at the Midlands, losing a close match to the returning NCAA champ, and then dropped two matches in the wrestle back placement rounds. If he wrestles 141 next year, I think he will be in the hunt for a title and be ranked in the Top 5 to start the year.
  3. Your right the stalemate was pretty bad. Looks like Jason was saying something about the guy scratching him. Jason looks great for only being cleared to wrestle 6 weeks ago and having surgery in the spring summer on the shoulder. That guy he wrestled is no slouch; he was NHSCA senior Nationals and New Jersey St. Champ this year. Every time I see Jason, he gets more and more impressive. Younger wrestlers should watch is body position, hip and head pressure, and how he immediately goes on the offense after he stops his opponent's attack. Doubt he will be pulled off a Red-Shirt. I would not be surprised if he came out next year at 141. While I think Alex was more explosive and high flying, Jason's workmanlike style is better suitef for today's college era. His defense and his ability to counter-attack will take him far, especially late in matched when guys get worn down.
  4. A school that many liked to hate when they were on top is Delta. The 1980-81 Team was pretty good with 4 state champs, and three young pups who became state champs. Campbell and Ginther did pretty well in NCAA's as well, as did Palmer 126 Chris Campbell, Delta 30-0 pin Richard Shepherd, Western 29-2-1 Fall 1:57 (Indiana State AA in NCAA) 132 Don Heintzelman, Delta 16-2 Tim Walsworth, Chesterton 29-3 Fall 4:50 155 Greg Gadbury, Delta 32-0 dec Benedict Puntillo, Highland 28-4 1-0 167 David Palmer, Delta 29-0 dec Roger Reisz, Evansville Reitz 33-2 MD 13-4 (high school Dream team) 4th Place Chris Ruble Young pups on that team included: David Locke, Delta future 145 lb champ in 1983-1984 John Ginther, Delta future 177lb state champ 1983-1984 & 1985 (and 3x NCAA AA) Ron Riggin, Delta future 185 champ in 1983-1984
  5. Wow just wow. 6 pins and a Forfeit? Quin Murphy is a 4 time NY state champ and get's pinned. Penn State is loaded. 6 guys ranked in Top 4 in their weight. 1COMPLETE RESULTS #1 Penn State 52, Indiana 0 125 lbs. - #2 Nico Megaludis (PSU) pins Joe Duca (IU), 4:36; Team Score: 0-6 133 lbs. - Jordan Conaway (PSU) pins Quin Murphy (IU), 4:42; TS: 0-12 141 lbs. - #23 Bryan Pearsall (PSU) pins Eric Roach (IU), 4:32; TS: 0-18 149 lbs. - #4 Andrew Alton (PSU) pins Geno Capezio (IU), 0:52; TS: 0-24 157 lbs. - #3 Dylan Alton (PSU) dec. #23 Taylor Walsh (IU), 11-6; TS: 0-27 165 lbs. - #2 David Taylor (PSU) maj. dec. #18 Ryan LeBlanc (IU), 8-0; TS: 0-31 174 lbs. - #6 Matt Brown (PSU) pins Cheney Dale (IU), 6:40; TS: 0-37 184 lbs. - #1 Ed Ruth (PSU) pins Luke Sheridan (IU), 1:24; TS: 0-43 197 lbs. - #3 Quentin Wright (PSU) wins by forfeit; TS: 0-49 285 lbs. - Jon Gingrich (PSU) dec. #7 Adam Chalfant (IU), 6-5; TS: 0-52
  6. Update on a few former Indiana wrestlers at Wisconsin Open who were wrestling unattached: Jason Tsirtsis - Northwestern (141) - cleared 3 weeks ago to wrestle. Went 5-0 at 141 with 3 pins, a technical fall, and a 9-2 win in final against a DIII Senior All-American from North Central, Nathan Fitzenreider. Will wrestle in Midlands. Kyle Ayersman - Purdue - 133 - Failed to make weight at 125, bumped up and wrestled 133. Went 4-1 and finished 2nd. In Semi-finals, in match of high school 3x's, beat Northwestern's Garrison White (North Cadolina 3x Champ - Fargo 2x placer) by a score 6-5. Lost in final to Minnesota St's Alphonso Vruno, who was 138lb state champ in Illinois last year and 3x finalist....huge guy. Alex Griffin - Purdue - 157 - bumped up to wrestle 157 - Went 4-1 to make finals, but injury defaulted to Davison of UW-Parkside who was Michigan High school state champ last year. Looked pretty good, especially on top. Tyler Kral - Purdue - HW - Went 4-1 to finish 2nd at Heavyweight. He was DQ'd in final for head-butt his opponent...rules have not been changed on that one. Dustin Shultz - Purdue - 157 former Kankakee Valley went 4-2 placing 4th at 157. Lost close semifinal to champ. Layten Binion (UN) (North Central) - 141 - For obvious reasons, was surpised to see him. He Went 1-2 at 141. Got pinned in first round by guy Tsirstis pinned.
  7. http://www.citadelsports.com/sports/wrest/2012-13/files/2012_Citadel_Open_Final_Brackets.pdf Jackson went 7-1 to place third. He had 7 pins! His loss was in OT.
  8. 133: Cash? Quiroga (Redshirt-Jr - 2x NCAA Q and AA) 18-5 Major decision over Danny Sabatello (Redshirt-Freshman) 141: Brandon Nelsen defeats Nick Lawrence 1-0
  9. Redshirt-Junior Camden Eppert (2x NCAA Qualifier) vs. True Freshman Kyle Ayersman Not takedown in first period. Both wrestlers accidently head-butt in 2nd, Ayersman takes some blood time. Both wrestlers exchange escapes and regular match finishes 1-1 after the 3rd period to send the match into overtime. Late in 1st overtime period, Eppert secures a takedown near edge of the mat to win 3-1 in OT. Good match...
  10. Looking forward to some good matches, especially 125 Looking forward to seeing Frankie Porras step up. Interesting Tidbit on the current Boilermaker Roster - four current wrestlers have IHSAA State title belts in the 119lb weight class: 2008 119 Christopher Quiroga, Lawrence North 2009 119 Camden Eppert, Anderson Highland 2010 119 Brandon Nelsen, Lawrence North 2011 119 Kyle Ayersman, Lake Central
  11. Yes, I would say this is a decent Vision Quest - http://bit.ly/gpeWH8
  12. I heard Minnesota as well, but not sure of the Football Scholarship rules apply to wrestling as well, where you can't receive a scholarship if you transfer to other Big Ten university. It is is UM, hope the best for him.

  14. Did Indiana not reoffer him after he went JUCO? Most will usually honor this agreement. Looks like former Purdue All-American Patascil is doing some good recruiting there if he helped bring in Wright and Mullins. He made himself visible at the Semi-states and State tourney's...nice job.
  15. Not arguing the standards for turns and in control takedowns are clear as you indicate. I am talking about the aspect of attacking, countering, and great scrambles like in a match likeMalloy / Brill, but then easy points are given out for push outs and half-ass determination of control on edge of the mat when wrestlers are legitimately defending primary shots or counters, with hip movement, etc.. I get, that those are the rules, and perhaps it is just my complaint, but sometimes I think it fails to reward great athletic wrestling in favor of tacticle or simple scoring as a result of the location on the mat when that move was scored, while many times the more agressive wrestler in the situation is the reason two guys were near the edge of the mat in the first place... I am still torn if I like the 'period scoring system' in the last 10+ years; the sport wants initiation of scoring and agressiveness, yet there were many matches where early scoring would have ended the match or where now under this system vs. the old system it can take away primary agressor momentum. (that was not the case in this match). Sucks to see a guy lose when he outscored the total match score by several points. Just a matter of personal taste I guess. (Not that it mattered, but thought Malloy could have been awared points in the first, when he launched Brill over his head - looked like some exposure was possible there)
  16. Watched the Bryce Brill vs. Neal Malloy match; Neal wrestled him pretty well except getting caught in that leg-lace in 3rd period. With the scoring in freestyle being so funky now (push outs, etc.) it is tough to gauge how close the matches are sometimes. This would be a pretty gook folkstyle match-up.
  17. Have to agree, could be a lot of late bloomers, but the cadate results are impressive and you do have 2 or 3 of those horses. Statistically after their Sophomore year, this years 2012 class had about 20 state placers, while this years group of Sophomore class had about or 14 (6 in the 106 lb weight class), so this years Sophomore class is pretty solid, but the rivalries (other than Boston - Micic) are not there yet as the depth has not taken shape. However, I also think their collective strength is more conducive to Freestyle than to collegiate/folkstyle. IMO, > Boston - tough, but can he grow and come back to answer the bell and dominate or is he a 106 lb legend (ala Greg Freije or Scott Ellis) > Micic - tough, tough, tough. Where does he end up at weight wise? Does he become the same guy at the 119 -132 lb weight? I think he does. > Kelly quitely impressed me and has a lot of upside. > Le Count - I think he has the most upside and will grow. As I noted before, he looks very comfortable working his offense inside, and left or right. Most of the coaches and elders here can tell you how you really can't teach kids this, if ever, as that comes from wrestling a long time. > Gelen Robinson - just think what you could do with a kid that athletic if you had him year round, full time. > Branden James - not in this class, but he gave Brooks fans a it of a nail biter for a while in a hard fought semi.
  18. Lol, I could have swore when the video started the other kid looked just like John Smith at that age. Joe Smith looks and wrestles more like Smith's older brother LeRoy; you would rarely see John Smith go up top like that....but tough kid. Any of these Indiana Cadets wrestling Jr as well?
  19. Some big tourney's for the guys to become High School Juniors with long term implications. Does Smith's kid have a low single ?
  20. What a scrapper. His Semi-final against Willis was one of the top 5 matches at State this year. Prepared, Poised, Patient, and didn't Panic.
  21. Wow, Mappes has had an amazing year. Comes out of nowhere, never a state qualifier, beats the sentimental favorite and prototypical wrestler-athlete in Willis at State, wins State Title undefeated, and is on the cusp of a Junior AA Status. He should be the standard for kids to look up to, that if you have to keep banging each practice, each match, and each year, you will reach that point where everything can start clicking for you. I forgot, was he even pre-season ranked last year? And for Miracle to get beat by another cadet is a huge upset. That girl from HI must be a bruiser if she hung with Miracle.
  22. Just the 103 lb Weight Class from 2008-2009 Will leave that void. 23. Well said; you and Y2 are spot on. Laboratory experimental proof to support your point can be found by looking at the success of 'da Region' wrestlers in the last 10 years at Indiana State finals. An underpinning element to the success of those wrestlers is due to Illinois; more specifically to proximity to the Overtime Wrestling School of Wrestling. If you peruse their website and look at the list of dedicated Indiana wrestlers who trek an hour, 2-3 times per week in the off-season from 'da Region' to Naperville to lock horns with the best from Illinois & the Midwest it is pretty telling. But the story is not just the Indiana guys on the list, but just look around to the names Illinois guys in the room they train with all the time. As to the big picture support of Indiana wrestling at large, this is perhaps in my mind the primary reason I would support class wrestling; on one hand there is unique pride in the one-class system because in the end, we know the top guys are battle tested and have earned their badge of honor. But I have come to believe we need to incentivize success for the sport to grow, and create depth through success, which will keep more kids hungry in the sport knowing they have a shot. It's a tough balance, but as long as it does not become 'handing out soccer trophies to all', it can grow and stay meaningful in preparation for life's future lessons. (Side-note: Indiana basketball made a boneheaded decision because they miscalculated the value of history and how their consumer valued of their product. Indiana class basketball was a way of life, a special Friday night, and belief that each TOWN was chasing a holy grail. Just to be fan, or to make the team for most meant they became part of the lore, passion, and prestige of Indiana basketball, which drove the hunger of kids wanting to play. Heck I bet even basketball Sectional Champions got champ ring and a POA. ) As to the Indiana, Illinois wrestling argument on IL's depth, population and youth organization are the difference. Indiana has come a long way in improving the kids programs (thanks to many of the high school coaches), but having coached middle school in Illinois in the 1990's, I was blown away with the size and intensity of the machine that is the IKWF. It was on par or superior to the Indiana High School operation, and kept K-8 kids wrestling all the way into March. Regardless of the coaching quality, just having the organization in place is half the battle. Thus to improve Indiana wrestling, in addition to the coaches who help keep Indiana High school wrestling going (despite pathetic IHSAA support), I think class wrestling is the best for the future of the sport in Indiana for all. As well the IHSAA coaches need strengthen and find away to more people with wrestling experience voted to the various IHSAA boards, but not just coaches, they need to find former wrestlers who are now professionals out in the work force who may not be seen as to one-issue people and be threatening to the IHSAA machine. At the same time, continuing to cementing & grow the structure of the K-8 and those great volunteers who selflessly put on freestyle tournaments, and continue to grow K-8 programs, it's good to hopefully see the private training programs like the CIA's, Region Wrestling Academies, etc' succeed, as they have become important in filling a void. Y2, on top of what you guys have done with Indiana Mat, I really like what you guys have been doing with promoting the RTC's, and various camps and clinics, while trying to build a foundation at places like Garrett, keep it up the great work. http://overtimewrestling.com/students.html INDIANA HIGH SCHOOL STATE CHAMPIONS form OVERTIME WRESTLING Angel Escobedo - 2002 (IN) Mike Escobedo - 2002 (IN) Alex Tsirtsis - 2002 (IN) Alex Tsirtsis - 2004 (IN) Eric Galka - 2005 (IN) Eric McGill - 2006 (IN) Andrew Howe - 2006 (IN) Eric Galka - 2007 (IN) Eric McGill - 2007 (IN) Andrew Howe - 2007 (IN) Andrew Howe - 2008 (IN) Kyle Ayersman ? 2010 (IN) Kyle Ayersman - 2011 (IN) Kyle Ayersman - 2012 (IN) Jose Escobedo - 2002 (2nd, IN) Josh Garza - 2002 (4th, IN) ose Escobedo - 2002 (2nd, IN) Josh Garza - 2002 (4th, IN) Andrew Howe - 2005 (2nd, IN) Eric Howe - 2005 (3rd, IN) Brennan Cosgrove - 2006 (2nd, IN) Eric Galka - 2008 (2nd, IN)
  24. I have to agree, although I would not be surprised to see LeCount on a growth spurt that takes him to higher than 138. I really like the style of both these wrestlers; Molloy, Lecount, and a gutsy Blanton would make for some great match-ups at State. Molloy is more 'initiating aggressive' directing his offense, and when he is directing the action, is really impressive when he starts pounding doubles and singles in barrages - wow, look out. However, it appeared he had a few defensive lapses at Al Smith, and the State meet when the match pace slowed. IMO his work this summer should be all defensive. Quite frankly, IMO, he would be better served wrestling at his natural weight. To beat LeCount, he has to use his speed and defend counters better. LeCount's offense is more predicated on him initiating a set-up to get the reaction and position he wants. His high-inside crotch and ability to immediately turn the corner and switch to a double is impressive technique; not many kids get the nuance of that move - they hesitate and end up in bad position with a single leg & their head stuck on the outside, which allows their opponent to turn the corner and counter. LeCount also works inside ties very well for a young guy, and appears comfortable in working his offense in an underhook or outside-bicep situation. On top he is an underrated pinner with his arm bar & chicken wing series, and can effectively use the legs. Early in the season, I would expect him to be adjusting to wrestling the bigger guys. If he learns to better combine his Hi-C attack and work it back & forth with his outside single attack to the opposite side, he would be tough to beat.
