  1. I'm a Region guy and I agree about 138. Should have been 2 and at least 2. Curious to know the explanation given for no points being issued.
  2. #wow! #didntseethatcoming My pick ems took a beating this morning, Garcia was just outside of a lock in my book. Love our state tournament Bc of this.
  3. Danny Williams, but not really a 4. Beat undefeated Justin Mora on Friday on a questionable call. That should have been title match had Williams not defaulted the previous week.
  4. Don't remember who beat Sinkovics, but he like Eric Keith was pinned. Keith was a junior, 50-0 and had beaten everyone in his path, I had him as my pick to win it, I think he was at 130 that year, his junior year. Got spladled and we all got to see what is in my opinion the greatest 4-1 upset. If it's any consolation, Keith won it the next year at 140 and did go undefeated. Not to bring up horrible wounds for Keith, but I think he lost as a #1 twice, could be wrong, but in my defense it was 17 years ago.
  5. 132 is the only one I might go with, but the rest I'm not so sure about. I know it happens a few times each year but because I'm sure 1's have historically won 90+% of the time it's always hard. Davison' s loss last year was a big shock to me, though the young man that beat him made a great run. I could probably start a thread, but what are some big 4-1 shockers you remember? For me, Sinkovics was a biggie and my all timer is 50-0ish Eric Keith, dude was awesome, that loss left my jaw wide open.
  6. According to the latest numbers from House Speaker, Sean Spicer, this year's total attendance has already been recorded as the largest in the history of the state finals.
  7. Except that Asa Garcia has losses on his resume', so that would eliminate him from the next Chad Red in my book. He's the only sophomore who has a chance at winning 4 if that's what you mean I'm good with that. I've already addressed the weight situation in an earlier post, but to answer the question, no I don't like a freshman Mendez vs. a senior Garcia, though I don't think he'd be overwhelmed in the match or that big to make it happen. He's more likely a 113 pound freshman in my opinion.
  8. Mendez won the high school division in Michigan earlier this year at a weight lower than 106. He has another year to grow and get stronger, he does do weight room work a few times a week with the LC coach, so I'd say in 2 years he's more than likely a 113 pounder. While a title is absolutely in reach at 113, I think its a bit more difficult than at 106 where he's likely to wrestle other freshman. Just looking at recent history, kids like Pebble, Cummings, and Garcia occupied 113 at sophomores or above, all of whom would give Mendez fits. I know Jesse well and can assure you, him reading this would do nothing to his ego. The kid is humble and well grounded, if it wasn't for his entire wardrobe being comprised of wrestling shirts, you wouldn't even know he wrestled because he never brings it up.
  9. The larger problem Karl is that most people on this board take hearsay as fact. Just because you hear they moved, doesn't mean it's fact. Also, with now lax the state has become with regard to residency, whatever a family does to get denied eligibility has to be egregious in the eyes of the IHSAA. The finger pointing needs to stop, the funny part is you don't hear anything negative from the family. The Moran's have handled this with class in my opinion, perhaps realizing the results of the case are solely on their shoulders. I though the kids said the right things when they were interviewed in the paper and seem resigned to just move forward and learn from the mistake.
  10. Perhaps the Demien family actually moved within the Penn school boundaries and into a year round residence, rendering the "Past Link" mute.
  11. Great breakdown! Question for someone in the know, how'd the first match between Lee and McIntosh go scoring wise? I have a hard time believing McIntosh scored any offensive points against Lee. My personal opinion is should that match happen, Lee wins by 5+ points at the very least. Oh and at 145 I wouldn't be one bit surprised to see Crary in the final, wrestled well the last few weeks.
  12. I would question what constitutes a slam in the rule book. I sat next to a licensed official and he said slamming was a point of emphasis this year. I thought Bautista returned him with force, but followed him to the mat, so it didn't appear that there was intent to cause injury. I can't speak to the extent of the injury to the Penn wrestler or whether he was trying to win an academy award, but he seemed able to wrestle after the first two stoppages. I thought the ref got too involved in the match (I'm aware there is an officials link, Fabio, no need to share it) and should have allowed 2 talented wrestlers to decide who was going to state on the mat. I know neither kid, but from my spacious seat, I felt the fans were robbed of a great match. Removing all the "slam" points, I believe that's a tied match with a minute and a half left in the 3rd, with a spot at state on the line, that's what it's all about.
  13. Mike, while it doesn't have the same intimate feeling as the finals did at Merrillville, I'll agree the folks at EC did a nice job. The sound system was atrocious, besides barely making out the wrestler's names in the finals, nothing else was audible. Schools obviously have more important things to pay for, so I don't see that problem being fixed anytime soon. On the flip side, Merrillville had a great sound system, but I always wished they didn't because that guy in the finals was awful to hear. Side note, it was great from a time situation to have 4 mats through the semis, my neck just hurts from trying to watch so many great matches going on at once! BTW, Delapena was a monster yesterday, totally dominated a returning state champ, the kid is peaking at the right time.
  14. My vote still goes to you. I never mentioned wrestling at all since we were discussing Brooks's mma fight. I mean I graduated high school at 135 pounds, so wrong again on the big guy (though I'm a tad north of 180 these days), and I cut weight but would call it a normal struggle every week, 5-10 pounds. Never missed weight and I didn't even have a team to help me make it and I didn't get paid.
  15. Haha. Ok speaking of Johnny Hendricks, he's missed weight 3 times, surely he realizes he gets paid to fight and has enough money to hire people to make sure he makes weight and yet 3 times he's not. Perhaps the sport you follow so closely and passionately has a problem with their weight cutting practices. Seems your argument has holes, you seem real smart, stop while I only think you're a fool, don't prove me right. Seems normal....http://www.mmafighting.com/2016/8/10/12431844/cris-cyborg-shown-crying-during-brutal-weight-cut-before-ufc-debut
  16. But I thought he had nutritionists and dieticians, plus losing weight is his job? Now you admit that 2 of his fights were weight related? Do you Ike to argue for the sake of arguing? You'd get along well with my wife!
  17. Ok, in the 8-4 win how many TD's did Manspeaker have? Today he had one that I clearly recall and perhaps a second and was in on several others that he didn't finish. Saying both were 4 point decisions doesn't tell the whole story. Black took him down more today than he had in the previous matches combined, he just looked off.
  18. Taking nothing away from Black, who wrestled out of his mind today, but was Rumph ill today? I've seen him wrestle 10 or so times and he didn't look like himself today. He struggled through his ticket round match with the Penn kid and then looked like a shell of himself against Black. Not looking for anyone to make excuses for him, he just didn't look right. Congratulations to Black, looked great today and made a big statement in that win. Sometimes a loss is a good thing to get you refocused, especially when it's prior to the 4th weekend of the post season.
  19. I am in fact old enough to remember that happening. Most of the fighters do not have the means to afford nutritionist or dieticians, but the top guys most certainly do. Though even the top guys miss weight far too often in my opinion. We can agree to disagree, my point in posting was to ponder the number of fights that are cancelled simply because fighters did not properly cut weight. I think we can both agree trying to lose 20+ pounds in a week is insanity. Some of the literature I've read denotes this as a regular occurrence. Use the google machine if you have free time. I'm over this, it would have been cool to see Brooks tonight, hopefully he gets another opportunity.
  20. I'd disagree that most have dieticians or nutritionist. I can also assure you nothing I did ever caused my kidneys to fail, blood to appear in my urine, bouts of fainting, or my losing the ability to control my bowels, all things I've read and seen. If this was a normal part of your weight cutting, then more power to you. The way a large majority of these guys do it is dangerous.
  21. I'd love to know how many of the "illnesses" or "injuries" are directly related to the idiotic ways those guys attempt to make weight. With a few of the things I've read and viewed, it shocks me that more don't die doing what they are doing to make weight. The long term health issues they will suffer also concerns me.
  22. Not trying to bring up old wounds, but your son has been on both sides of that. I would have taken it to the bank, no pun intended that he would have placed at state, unfortunately he ran into a very game Dembowski. He was something like 40-0 going into that match and Dembowski had close to 10 losses, but that's why we wrestle.
  23. I'm an amateur crowd estimator (much like our President), but it didn't seem like the EC Semi-State was anywhere near that figure last year. If I had to venture a guess I'd say the number was between 3000-3500. There was plenty of space to sit and actually if I recall correctly, one side of the upper level bleachers were not pulled out. I'm not sure of total capacity of the gym, but even with one section closed, there was plenty of seating available, so perhaps even my estimate of 3000-3500 is high, though alternative facts have been reported at a total attendance of 1 million.
  24. Hey now, you're bringing back some memories. My first car was a Cutty. White with beautiful burgundy interior.
  25. That's Bc you guys typically leave so early, stick around a few more hours this week, we'll grow on you
