  1. I was there and can tell you that the call was pure BS. If it would have been my son, DQed I would have had to be escorted out by police. The kid yelled something because his shoulder popped causing great pain. It was an involuntary response. It was not audible from the stands. He did not direct the profanity at anyone. This kid has never shown poor sportsmanship in the 4 years I have watched him wrestle. He is truly a class act. He accepted this BS call with grace and dignity. I would have flipped out if the call was made on me. I would have shown that official what true misconduct really was, trust me. What makes matters worse, is that the official wasn't going to do anything about it until the opposing coach got in the official's ear. Make the call or don't! But for the love of GOD don't let the opposing coach make the call. I hate that crap. I don't normally bad mouth an official because it is one of the world's hardest jobs and mistakes are going to be made. However, this was a senseless mistake. The way it was handled was unethical at best. The punishment didn't fit the crime for sure. I have been around wrestling for 45 years and have heard profanities slip out of the mouths of hundreds of wrestlers and never was one DQed. I have seen wrestlers shove other wrestlers out of bounds and bark FU and nothing more than a warning was given. I certainly hope that this young official learned something from this. I agree that sportsmanship is an important lesson to teach our kids, but this was not a learning lesson, it was an overly aggressive application of a rule that isn't even close to being consistently called. If that kid would have been unable to wrestle sectionals, it would have been a travesty. I realize that being a 3 time state qualifier doesn't provide a young man with special considerations, but that is what was at stake when this opposing coach was allowed to make the call. Too much at stake to make a call like this.
  2. I like a good laugh at the Region's expense. But I gotta say, "Huh?" Your humor was lost on me! Sorry.
  3. The only real problem with looking at 106 as the toughest weight class is that it is usually good freshmen wrestling other good freshmen. Might make it the most entertaining, but not the highest quality of wrestling. 106 does seem very competitive when looking at the top eight wrestlers. After that, IMO it is probably not that strong. However, I would much rather watch 106 pounders wrestle than say 160 and up. Those little grapplers can really move. For the record, The Bailey kid from Cath. looks very tough. I haven't seen the Konrath or Cummings kids wrestle yet, but Bailey looked fantastic last weekend at Westfield as he took it to some pretty tough competition.
  4. Great point. To be honest, I was really just stirring the pot. I knew before it was pointed out, that the Merr. S.S. was projected to have more over all placers than the other S.S. Heck, I will even say that the 126 pound champ may not come from the Merr. S.S. After watching Lee wrestle Micic may have huge problems as well, and he is one of the three #1 ranked guys. You have to love this time of the wrestling season!
  5. I realize that many schools that feed into the Merrillville S.S. aren't really in "The Region", but I was really talking about the lack of love of the Merr. S.S. in general.
  6. As I look at the most recent rankings, I can't help but notice the lack of love for the Merrillville semi state. If the rankings hold out, Merrillville S.S. walks away with only 3 champs. I can't ever remember, at least in recent history, when Merr. S.S. had such few state champions. I am not bashing the rankings guys or the ranking system. They are fun and probably pretty accurate over all. All I am saying is that I won't believe it until I see it regarding only 3 state champs from "The Region."
  7. I am sorry but freestyle wrestling is the most spectator unfriendly sport I have ever watched. No wonder they wanted to axe wrestling from the Olympics due to lack of spectator interest. I love wrestling with all of my heart, but that match was crappy to watch. Freestyle of the 70s and 80s was much better. I have no clue how it transformed into this. JMO but I'll take folkstyle or collegiate wrestling any day.
  8. After watching the Lee-Davis match, I can say that I don't envision Micic ever beating this kid. Too sound on his feet, too technical, too quick, and unbelievably strong for a freshman. I think he has a true shot at being at a 4 timer. All I can say is WOW! I also agree that it gets harder to beat a guy every time you wrestle him. But I can tell you that Davis would never beat this kid or even come close. I think Micic would do a great job against Lee, and it would be a close match, but if I had a thousand dollars to wager, my money goes to Lee every time. I am not a MD fan and it pains me to say that I sure wish this kid was a region boy, but it is what it is.
  9. I am an overly competitive dude and can sometimes let the competitive juices cloud my vision of making good choices or maintaining appropriate language, but these Cath coaches are definitely wound a bit too tight. Great technical teachers and I am sure they are good guys but desire to be the best shouldn't come at the cost of being an embarrassing (bleep). I wasn't close enough to hear the statement, and don't even know if the comment was really made. However, telling any volunteer worker especially a child that they should be fired definitely puts you in a category of being a loser regardless of wins or losses. JMO.
  10. I like general admission seating, because I am serious enough of a fan to go through the bull crap needed to sit close to the action. Wrestling is not a sport to watch from a distance. However, I do think each wrestler should have 4 reserved seats in the lower section for parents and grandparents. Or maybe have a parent observation section always reserved for immediate family and must have credentials to enter. I hate the waiting game and ridiculous mad rush of insanity three times just to see a wrestling match too, but I would hate to be forced into the upper sections even more. I guess I will take the mad dash.
  11. Don't know scores sorry. But here are 3rd and 4th Place matches that I wrote down. 106- Bledsoe (Marion)over Garretson (Peru) 113- Hall (LCass) over Abbot (Jay C.) 120- Corcoran (Log) over Akais (Jay C) 126- Collins (Frank) over Ray (Jay C) 132- Widner (TL) over Alderman (Delphi) 138- Metcalf (TL) over Cox (L Cass) 145- Leonard (Car) over Feuerstein (Mar) 152- Braden (West) over Finnerty (Jac C) 160- Ragains (Frank) over Button (Win) 170- Garpow (Win) over Malone (SBRiley) 182- Wade (TL) over Campbell (Ren) 195- Langly (Ren) over Mc Dorman (West) 215- IDK 285-IDK
  12. You can compare the two sectionals if you want, and yes Jeff would dominate, but let's not forget that the Logan regional is one of the weakest across the state. Not sure you want to start claiming bragging rights between these two sectionals. IMO however, the best team comes from the Twin Lakes sectional. I don't think anyone from these 2 sectionals can beat TL head to head unless TL has key kids get hurt, quit, or come up academically ineligible. We will find out a lot this week because I think Twin Lakes wrestles Harrison.
  13. You are absolutely correct. The people that work on putting all of the wrestling information out there have to put a lot of their time into it, time I wouldn't want to commit to. I respect that. I'll be honest, I totally would have purchased the magazine if the rankings were not blocked to the public. It really is matter of principle for me. Heck I do not think 15 dollars is too much for one darn good wrestling publication. (I have seen the magazine already.) I realize that the preseason rankings are the selling point of the magazine, but I think there is enough other great information in the magazine that people still would have purchased it. I just thought that this web site was the source of wrestling information for the wrestling community. I think the preseason rankings should have been posted for public viewing. However, I truly am grateful and respect the people who dedicate their time to putting wrestling information out there. Without you guys, we who love the sport, would be in the dark.
  14. Not to be a jerk or anything, but the rankings are really nothing more than entertainment value at best. Certainly not worth 15 dollars, I don't care how much time someone puts into it. I will say the mag looks pretty neat, but still not worth seeing rankings based on spotty information at best. If paying money is the only way to see the rankings this year, I guess I'll have to pass and just watch the season unfold as it goes. Not a real problem for me because I don't have a horse in this race. Maybe if I did, I'd pay the 15 dollar ransom.
  15. That is a bold statement and a lot for a kid to have to live up to. This kid must be a phenom, at least he better be to hit the 4 time mark at any weight.
  16. Your probably right. I guess 45 years of wrestling, coaching, and spectating does indicate a lack of understanding of what it takes to get to state. However let me retort. First my predictions are just my thoughts and I am certainly prone to being full of crap at times when I make predictions. It's just that I have seen too many Merr semi states where wrestlers with nearly unblemished records from the Logan Regional get stomped by guys with 12-15 losses on the season. West Lafayette as well as most of the Hoosier Conference programs lack strength of schedule on a regular basis. Again, I would love it if the entire WL team made it to state because I am a west side resident. I love it when a kid like Doty gets through as well as any Logan reg. wrestler. As far as Duval is concerned, heck anything is possible at heavy weight. Most unpredictable weight. I agree with you that he is a tough kid. Still don't see him making it sorry. But come to think of it I probably should start buying lottery tickets. I'm just having fun man. I wish all the local kids the best of luck this season. Go Twin Lakes!
  17. Meyer is the Harrison kid I was saying would make it to state. I personally think the WL kid will need the same type of favorable draw at Merr that he got last year to get through. I guess it's possible. I'm sticking with 3 solids and a couple maybes. But if we are talking maybes I think TL has 2 more that could sneak through with really good SS draws.
  18. Sure would be nice but I don't see it. TL takes 2 Harrison 1. The only 3 to make it out of Merr. There is always a small chance maybe one of the others gets a real favorable draw and sneaks in. Just my thoughts.
  19. Not if he doesn't wrestle any better than he did on Friday night this year.
  20. The best you got is "nice fella bags?" That one made me laugh.
  21. I am exaggerating here but when Evansville Mater Dei was on top they'd bring a couple thousand screaming fans alone. I think I heard 2 people cheer when they were announced at the parade. All kidding aside, the dip in attendance may have something to do with the fact that the staff at Banker's Life are a bunch of power tripping nice fella bags and getting way worse every year! Next year I heard they were collecting DNA samples before they let you in. Seriously, empty your pockets and physical pat down at a wrestling meet. 10000 people pushing to find a seat and they are giving a 30 second pat down on everyone. Give me a break. I'm sure they hate the wrestling weekend, but they don't seem to mind our money.
  22. This has probably already been mentioned on other threads but man I am glad I wasn't the ref in the match between Molloy and Walker last night. It was a crappy dirty rotten shame that either boy had to lose that match. I replayed the last 5 seconds over and over in my head and dang it seemed too close to tell. I would love to see a video replay with the clock. From where I sat, that call could have gone either way. I don't have a horse in this race, but darn I felt bad for the Yorktown boy, who handled the situation with class and grace. His parents should be proud. Not sure I would have been so understanding if it were me. To go from thinking you just won a state title to sorry we changed our minds is a bitter pill to swallow. I know that using video replay in wrestling at the high school level would never be implemented and in my opinion should never be implemented on a regular basis. However, maybe in the state championships at the semi final and final rounds it could be used. I know the intent of high school sports is to build character and to teach sportsmanship and to respect the decision of the officials. But man, we want to get it right too. From an outsider's perspective I think the officials did a fantastic job. I just wouldn't have wanted to make that call. Try to be positive about the officials, but what do you guys think about that call. Did they get it right? Sorry in advance if I just repeated a thread that someone else has already started.
  23. Not saying that it won't happen, but how many freshman 103 or 105 pound state champs grow a bit and never repeat the task or only one more time. Quite a few that I can think of. The young man is quite impressive though.
  24. I don't doubt he had some great training, but my point was well taken from people far removed from the Culver Comm. family. And the traveling all over the place dedicating himself, is exactly what I was talking about. He more than likely didn't travel all over the state with 30 teammates and a coaching staff. So yes much of this fell on his shoulders.
