  1. Arsenal Tech Nick Hull 3a Yes
  2. Arsenal Tech will be at Cathedral this weekend and looking forward to it...not sure who's place we took but we just got on this year. Thanks, Mr. Fox! Warren, Avon, Cathedral, etc. Should make for a good afternoon....
  3. Duncan is a kid that has never got his shot because of his homelife and one could literally film a movie about. I wont go into details but it's pretty bad. He bounced around from couch to couch in his earlier years, found his home with us, just started last year and wrestled all summer. Got in over 100+ matches and wreslted for team Indaina at various meets. Check his trackwrestling pofile if it's still up. Beat a few Fargo All-Americans along the way. Still scratching the surface but all-in-all is pretty tough. To Chandler's defense, I believe everyone at Yorktown wrestled up because it was their first dual of the season, as we bumped up Diondre to wrestle Bevans. It's only one match and it's a long season. Good win for him but no where near our ultimate goal, individually and/or as a program.
  4. Thanks coaches, wrestlers and fans! It would not have been possible without the Tech administration, the kids, Mike Morgan, Mark Durham, and most importantly your representation! All-in-all, it was a pretty good tournament for a great man and we look forward to making it even better and bigger next year! Best wishes the rest of the season! 106 Results Guaranteed Places 1st Place - Jack Chastain of Hamilton Southeastern 2nd Place - Christian Mazza of Southport 3rd Place - Ben Cauffman of Fort Wayne Carroll 4th Place - Dylan Robertson of Bedford North Lawrence 5th Place - Lay Do May of Northwest 6th Place - Jacob Miller of Greenfield Central 7th Place - Dempler Caylee of Madison Consolidated 8th Place - Austin Gunckel of Muncie Southside 9th Place - Forfeit Forfeit of Unattached 10th Place - FF 106 Manual of Manual 10th Place - FF 106 Arsenal Tech of Arsenal Tech 1st Place Match Jack Chastain (Hamilton Southeastern) 5-0, Fr. over Christian Mazza (Southport) 4-1, . 5. I just got wind of this and Josh Holden is one of the best coaches around! If someone wants to hate on anyone, bring this animosity and criticism my way. We were down some teams for the John Hurrle because there were a handful of schools that backed out, for a variety of reasons, and so I contacted him AT THE LAST MINUTE to see if he would be interested in getting in. He was in a current contract and so he went OUT OF HIS WAY to send his JV team at MY REQUEST, just so we could have enough quality squads there. Holden does not deserve a lick of criticism from this. I have known him for almost 20 years and I consider him a brother. He is a great guy, and a great coach, so much so that the JV team beat some quality competition and and added value to the the tournament. Again Greenfield-Centrals JV team came at MY REQUEST because there were some oher schools that backed out. Do not let this be a topic of discussion and take away from a great event honoring a great man. Josh, I am sorry for this. In hindsight I see I should have informed the other coaches, but I did not know people were going to make this big of a deal about it. I consider the storm that has been created by this is a testament to your success. If you don't have any haters, that means you're not doing something right. Thank you again, Coach, and to your staff, the wrestlers that came out and competed, Greenfield-Central, Mr. Horrigan, the Greenfield-Central fans, and everyone else for showing your support and making this event a success! We look forward to a great season this year and to an even bigger and better Hurrle tournament next year!
  6. Should be fun! Great setup, as many of us know, with teams from across the state coming to kick off the 2011-2012 season. We're looking forward to a exciting day of wrestling honoring one of Indiana's finest, Hall of Fame Coach John Hurrle: Tech Head Coach from 1961-1987, State Champion Coach 1976 and 1979, Coach of the Year in 1976, 1979, and 1981, and one of the fathers of the Indiana State Wrestling Association. He touched many lives throughout his career and his words are still felt today. This is the inagural tournament and, as much as this year is going to be pretty good, we look forward to continuing this legacy even more for years to come. Please come show your support and enjoy a great November day of wrestling at one of Indiana's most established venues!
  7. Hawthorne, one of the best kids I have ever met, will be rowing for Harvard. Given his work ethic, attitude, and build, I forsee him being team captain of Harvard's row team by next year. Great kid! One of the only one's I know that would get off of the mat after a match, consult with the coach, and immediately go sit down and crack a book on metaphysics.
  8. A fellow coach and I were having this conversation and the question was asked about what part individual class wrestling plays in this discussion. So I took a look at the top programs in the country and broke it down a little. This is per the 2010-2011 Wrestling USA Magazine Rankings of the Top 40 high school wrestling programs in the country: - Of that top 40, only 19 states have at least one program ranked - Illinois and New Jersey both tied for the most with 5 schools being represented. - Next was Minnesota with 4, followed by Pennsylvania, Florida, California, and Iowa with 3, along with Oklahoma and Wisonsin with 2. - Of the top 5 schools, all come from individual classed states: Apple Valley Minnesota (3 classes) St. Paris Graham and St. Edwards from Ohio (3 classes) Brandon Florida (3 classes) Blair Academy New Jersey with one class. - 3 of the top 5 schools are private. Thoughts?
  9. Compiling information for thesis and trying to get feedback from Indiana on this as we approach the upcoming season: What are the most important aspects of building a national program? We can look at the Perry's, EMD's, Mishawaka's, here in Indiana as powerhouses who have cracked the country's best, along with the country's best: Apple Valley, St. Paris Grahm, Brandon, St. Edwards, Blair, Broken Arrow, etc. Is it the coaches? a few good kids? administration? Parents? middle school and elementary programs? Class wrestling? Time? Money? More money? Thoughts?
  10. This whole situation is unfortunate on a variety of levels, but IPS is facing $20 million in budget cuts and it has to come from somewhere. The state is taking over Arlington, Howe, Manual, and Donnan Middle School for not showing adequate progress over the last 5 years per the Indiana Department of Education, and others are still on the watch list. It's easy to point fingers at Dr. White, the teachers, parents, and/or the kids, but it's tough all the way around and blame is shared across the board. As much as taking away athletics/wrestling at these schools sucks, IPS is still a business and it is a business move. Everyone knows that athletics is the primary reason some of our kids even come to school in the first place. But IPS paying for athletics at a school it is now competing against for kids is not even logical. IPS already has to incurr the transportation bill to those charters. The kids have the choice of staying or transfering to another IPS school, and the secondary personnel are displaced and must interview for their jobs. Definitely unfortunate but capitalism at it's finest. I know enough to know I know nothing at all, but through all of this what I've seen in IPS is that Dr. White does have it together, there are some great teachers who genuinely care about the kids, some good parents who want the best for their child, career/prep programs not offered anywhere else in the state, extremely intelligent and bright students, while many IPS elementary and middle schools test at the highest levels in the state. IPS' problem on the other hand is much bigger than Dr. White. It's issue is cultural, generational, social, economical and spans across the United States. We face daily what others only see in movies. These kids exist, have to be taught somewhere and while it's not the easiest thing to do - someone has do it. This is why I chose to coach in IPS - because of the challenge, the difference I could make, and there is only one way to go and that is up. I imagine this feeling is shared by all who have invested themselves in our kid's success. IPS wrestling next season will look differently when that time comes, which is why it is important for us take this year we have now and make the absolute most out of it. There is some gome great history at these schools and I am certain our programs will go out strong the last year under IPS' banner. Who knows, the corporations taking over these schools just may have money for it themselves? Either way, best wishes IPS coaches and wrestler THIS upcoming season!
  11. I'm not sure what all is going in this magazine, but I am glad it is digital. Nevertheless, are there any thoughts on merging the Indiana Wrestling Digest with this? At least for the first edition? I know Condry lost a lot of money on the printed version of IWD because people didn't buy it like it they said they would, but it was a GREAT resource IMO. Thoughts?
  12. In regards to his 3 second pin, if he tells it, the kid came out in tennis shoes (bless his heart) and simply fell down...and THAT is why he gets a hard time from me. lol...either way, it's in the record books. Howard is awesome! He actually told me Andrew Howe, when he was in 8th grade, was going to be one of the best to ever wrestle in Indiana as well - and we've seen how that turned out. Again, congrats Coach Howard and to Lowell!
  13. Congratulations to Bobby! Great wrestler and friend! I still give him a hard time about having the country's fastest pin at 3 seconds. Coach Howard will do a great job at Lowell as a hometown hero and another region guy with gobs of credentials and experience. Best wishes Red Devils!
  14. Great article. Also, Gil Journey, Ian Spearman and Derek Butts are also competing in this event. Indiana, go handle your business!
  15. As it stands we have committments from Northwest, Manual, Bedford North Lawrence, Fort Wayne Carroll, Madison, Muncie South, Greencastle, New Palestine, Clinton Central, and several others. Capitol City definitely has the history, the LC Invite used to be pretty tough until they disbanded, but there is a new tourney in town. There are still maybe 2 or 3 openings still up but these will fill up relatively soon. It is going to be awesome! Give it a year or two and the John Hurrle Memorial will be a premier, if it's not already. (I'm getting ancy for the season!!)
  16. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it is, and will be, the newly created John Hurrle Memorial at Arsenal Tech on November 19th. Currently, it is a 16 team invitational with plans to go even bigger and better. This is the first year and there are already a few ranked teams committed. I know of plenty other, more established, tournaments throughout the state but this one is gearing up to be a monster. John Hurrle was such an extraordinary part of Indiana wrestling and having the opportunity to host a tournament in his name, at his school, is definitely a privelage. Tech has such a deep history and many of us remember Freestyle and Greco State being hosted there. What was once a 76 acre campus located downtown Indianapolis is now getting a multi-million dollar face-lift, so this is just the beginning of many good things to come!
  17. Arlington's 2011-2012 Head Coach - Chuck Jewell, Assistant - Derek Butts Congratulations and I feel these guys are perfect for Arlington at this time. Coach Jewell has been involved with wrestling forever, has years of coaching experience, a great relationship with our kids, and is ready to make some noise again. Coach Butts comes in behind him with Div. 1 college experience and technique, and will bang with absolutely everyone in the rooom. Don't sleep on Arlington next year. Big things ahead.
  18. The last RTC of the year for Arlington went well I thought! Pretty nice turnout. Definitely some studs there for all to bang with from the light weights to the heavy's. Hopefully all who stopped in, from beginners to collegiate wrestlers, learned something they will use to help them be more successful both on and off the mat. Thanks to all of the clinicians who came out and spent some time over this RTC season: Tonte, Lytle, Journey, Bradley, Williams, Ellis, Red, Gibson, Dowden, Walpole, Morgan, etc. We definitely want to thank the clubs and teams that came out and made this summer a success: Perry, Roncalli, LN, Warren, LC, Cathedral, Batesville, Whiteland, Cumberland, Howe, Arlington, Tech, Manual, Attucks, Jireh, etc. Thanks to the parents that endured their kids schedule and made the trip when I'm sure there were other things to do. Of course a shout goes out to the wrestlers that came by and put in time. I promise it will pay off. Lastly, a special thanks of course goes out to the entire wrestling community, Indianamat, the ISWA and Coack Peck for making it all possible. Next year, I PROMISE you it will be even better. Now we all get to prepare for the winter season where we can showcase the fruits of our labor! Let's go get it!!!!!
  19. Last Wednesday night of RTC at Arlington this year!!!!! Be sure to come out for one last evening of great wrestling in a cool atmosphere!!! Again, we have bangers, both young and old, coming through to get some mat time in. Hope to see you there!!!
  20. Practice tonight at Arlington 6p-8p. Several studs from M.s. to college coming in to roll around. only 2 more weeks left so if you want to check out a new venue, see you here tonight!
  21. Watched some of her matches on themat.tv and she looked untouchable. Wrestling like this I would not be surprised to see her contending for a gold medal in the Olympics. Impressive. How did the other ladies of Indiana fair?
  22. Greco is just as important to the success of Folkstyle and Freestyle as much as anything else. The confidence of simply being successful, improving your throws, being able to score points when leg attacks aren't cutting it, etc. These were all beneficial to my success and to the success of our kids as well. Truthfully, this is one of the problems in Indiana right now, in regards to the lack of Greco participation, but I believe we will get better. In regards to Fargo, it is a tough tournament and success does not come as easily as one thinks. There are a lot of factors that can go into winning in North Dakota and there will definitely be some surprises. I am glad, however, that we have as many "studs" as we have going. It is a far better representation of Team Indiana compared to some past tournaments, and going up there with a higher number of Indiana's best is refreshing. Whether we have 1 AA or 20 AA's, I hope we all go out there and handle our business.
