  1. This is what's wrong with the world. They give out medals for horse jumping (a "sport" where most of the work is done by a horse), but they eliminate what is arguably the purest form of competition. Wrestling is an event dating back to the original olympics. This is beyond shameful.
  2. I'll answer your question with a question. What percent of students come from schools in the upper 50% of enrollment? I'll give you a hint. It's way more than 50%... probably close to 75%. Think of each student as a raffle ticket. If you bought 50 tickets (number of boys at a small school), and your friend bought 2000 (number of boys at a large school), and 224 winning tickets were drawn (number of state qualifiers), you'd be crazy to expect you both to have the same number of winners. Each individual wrestler has an equal chance of going to state, just like each individual ticket would have an equal chance of being a winning ticket, but a bigger school should statistically expect to have a larger number of qualifiers because they hold more chances.
  3. Way to work that quote in. And I totally agree with your opinion about MD recruiting. If you lived nearby and had a potential superstar kid, where would you send them? Mater Dei! Are people really getting mad because MD has created a superior product and parents are choosing it for their kids? Nobody is holding a knife to their throat. If somebody believes a Catholic education is better for their child (whether it be because of academics, athletics, faith, or ANY other reason), and they are willing to pay money for it (when they've already paid taxes to support the local public school), what is wrong with that? This is capitalism. Imagine the pressure a MD wrestler has to perform. Imagine all the young wrestlers dreaming of making varsity there. Imagine having that kind of support by your school. Imagine the alumni they probably have giving back and helping with the program. Statistically, the more times they win state the MORE LIKELY it is that they will win again. You assume that the advantage they have is unfair, but it is exactly the opposite. They have EARNED their advantage.
  4. He's not serious. The weights he has listed are the actual weights they used to wrestle. He's joking about it being a "thing of the future" because they are actually the weights of the past. Under the old system, everybody over 185 was in the heavyweight division, and there was no limit to how big you could be.
  5. Got out of the habit of updating results. Here's our season since Christmas Scottsburg Warrior Classic: vs Southwestern W 60-11 vs Jennings County W 38-31 vs Mitchell W 48-36 vs Greencastle W 42-34 vs Ft. Wayne Concordia W 42-36 vs Washington L 29-45 vs Christian Academy W 66-6 vs Southport L 30-37 vs Scottsburg L 36-39 Dual: Greenwood Community W 41-31 Howe Hornet Invite: vs Scecina W 54-28 vs Faith Christian Academy W 61-3 vs Ft. Wayne Concordia L 35-39 vs Crispus Attucks W 64-16 vs Howe W 54-26 North Central Super 6: vs North Central L 33-35 vs Terre Haute S L 12-56 vs Terre Haute N W 45-27 vs Lawrence North L 24-51 vs Center Grove L 6-75 Dual: Pike W 31-26 Dual: Guerin Catholic W 72-6
  6. This sectional is a meat-grinder, even without Arsenal Tech this year. We've got some wrestlers with high expectations.
  7. It's a shame that this is uncommon. This weekend I observed a wrestler finish the first period up 22-10 (all 10 points from being let up). He only pinned his freshman opponent after securing a 15 point lead in the second period. Later in the day, he did the same thing against another opponent (likely another freshman). Is this making him any better? No. If he wants to get better, he should pin his opponent graciously and quickly, then find his practice partner after the match and drill 10 extra takedowns against somebody near his skill level. Why do coaches let this happen?
  8. Indianapolis Bishop Chatard should be 7-1 (not 8-2). I imagine the loss to New Pal got counted twice and the win against Rockville got counted twice (both of these teams also posted results from the same 5-way duals). Fixed per Y2
  9. This is a great start. I feel it's a shame it has to be based so much on early speculation (predicting top 7 teams at the end of the previous season). The at large spot does some to remedy this. Once this thing gets momentum, I would like to think that there would be a way for more than one team who has a singularly exceptional season to qualify. If it became very popular and gained credibility, I would imagine that plenty of schools would be willing to break a contract a month before to come. Perhaps 2 at large bids eventually? Just my thoughts. Overall, I think it sounds great. It would be a more realistic goal for our team than winning a sectional against large Indianapolis schools.
  10. Looking forward to the meet. Some of the Indianapolis City teams have made improvements in the last few years, and hopefully that trend continues. There will definitely be some great matchups throughout the day.
  11. Chatard 54, Whiteland 21 Chatard 60, North Putnam 24 Chatard 58, Rockville 14 Chatard 12, New Palestine 63
  12. It's a shame they changed it right before the dual ... that lineup really tied the room together.
  13. Bishop Chatard defeats Hamilton Heights 42-30
  14. Triple Dual @ Bishop Chatard 12/3/11 Bishop Chatard 57, Scecina 21 Scecina 48, Broad Ripple 12 Scecina 36, Cardinal Ritter 33 Bishop Chatard 54, Broad Ripple 18 Bishop Chatard 61, Ritter 18 Ritter 54, Broad Ripple 23
  15. If the parents are going to blame the school for his low grades, I would hope they have more than 1 semester's worth of grades supporting this opinion. If the kid's been pulling A's and B's for the three semesters prior to his current academic struggles, the problem is not with the school. Alexandria gets it's name smeared so that this kid can wrestle at a different school. If I was the superintendent, I wouldn't sign his release papers. If he hasn't been earning A's and B's for three semesters, then it might actually be the fault of the school. However, if this were the case, he definitely wouldn't have the 2.75 needed to transfer. :-\
  16. 2 F's and a D sounds like a 2.6 at best (assuming it comes with a lot of A's). Am I misinterpreting this, or did Yorktown not follow their own transfer rules? Do they mean a 2.75 cumulative GPA over the past two years?
  17. I saw it at Keystone Arts theatre in Indianapolis. Great story and well acted. I will also be buying the DVD when it comes out.
  18. ;D ;D ;D ;D I totally understand the secrecy because any decisions could be overturned, but I am incredibly anxious to find out.
  19. This is all there is to it. You need a weight class where almost everyone can compete. Now we all understand that weights are distributed in a bell-shaped curve. If you want an equal number of wrestlers in each weight class, then you have to make the classes near the ends of the curve wider. The question at hand is at what point is this unfair to the smaller wrestlers. Can a 95 lb kids compete with 106 lb kids? In my opinion they definitely can. That's only 12% of their body weight more. While that may sound like a lot to you, consider that we are already asking 216 pounders to compete with kids weighing 32% more than their body weight. It seems the heavyweights are the one's who are being ignored. I support the new weight classes.
  20. I think that both championships have value. I think that team state should be classed to make it relevant, and it needs to be saved to determine who is the best duel meet team in the state. However, I also like to know which team has the most wrestlers wrestling at the highest level. Why does the IHSAA have to be offended if we continue to crown an individual state tournament team champ. ... for that matter, why can't the IHSAA just award both trophies themselves. You know, make it official. So they have to pay for another award... totally worth it.
  21. Oh yes... I think I saw Mufasa die there. Or was that another herd of wildebeest? I can't remember.
  22. This is one of my favorite lessons that wrestling teaches... both for the kid who everyone thought would win but didn't and the kid who everyone though couldn't win but did.
  23. Is there any reason we can't class both individual and team state, and then add one more weekend where all the champs (or top two) from each class wrestle to decide THE champ?
  24. There will definitely be a lot of ranked wrestlers not making it out of the New Castle semi-state.
