  1. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kyle Shrewsbury and his family. Kinda puts things in perspective for all of us. http://www.nwitimes.com/high-school/crown-point/article_a7caa65c-269a-5a8b-b6db-121b4880dc4e.html
  2. Hugh G. Reckshun always cracks me up.
  3. "Who actually is the ranking guy? If winning a state title is so easy, I am sure he must hold a title or 2." He does. RG definitely comes off as arrogant at times, but he says what he thinks...I don't think he's gonna lose sleep over it either. Personally, I'd like to see him coach a few kids to the big dance before he so readily expressed his thoughts in public. However, I too have always wondered how in the heck so many NC kids have racked up all those season and career wins and didn't win the "Biggest One." Bad luck I guess.
  4. At every meet I've seen this year, and I've been to quite a few, Jason is the best coach CP's got; and I'm taking nothing away from their coaches! He wants perfection from his teammates, and he lets 'em know it! That's what separates him from nearly ALL the othersin my opinion, he is a classy young man. He is dominant, Montgomery was a tough and worthy opponent, but wow is Jason good.
  5. This does suck, but it is what it is. Let's face it, it's not rocket science in the chair anyway. He'll be at practice all week making sure that the game plan is ready to be followed. The rest of his coaches have all the mental faculties to do just fine...most of them anyway!
  6. The Duneland Athletic Conference has 17 State Qualifiers. The Laporte Regional has 16 SQ. The Calumet Regional has 11 SQ.
  7. LOL. You just made my day Region Dad...now, DON'T TALK TO ME!!! Left early last night, did the coaches "talk" after the meet??
  8. "The only problem I saw for him was weather he was going to grow enough to be a ligament 103 this year." I wonder if Coach Petrov can fill us in on Micic's development and WHETHER or not he's become a full-fledged ligament yet.
  9. Just wondering when the IHSAA would reschedule the Team Regionals if necessary?? Anyone know?
  10. Based on the current weather forecast...team regional is pretty questionable, the Region might be under a foot or three of snow!! Would they reschedule it for the following Wednesday???
  11. Saw Miracle for the first time this season. She is tough, not flashy, just tough. She stays in good position and has all the skills necessary to bang with the best at Merrillville. She's probably gonna need more offense on her feet to make it out, but she is definitely right there!
  12. A torn hammy is a bad injury, even sitting down is uncomfortable. You know that it would take darn near an "act of God" to get Howe off the mat, if anyone can make a full recovery it's him. Good luck Andrew, you're still the champ.
  13. On a side note, the little guys in the Boone Grove Wolves Wrestling Club are working their tails off! Over the last couple years, we've had many state placewinners, a couple of ISWA state champs, and a Runner-up finish in the small team division at folkstyle state last year. We have tireless coaches and parents who are doing everything in their power to change the way wrestling is perceived in our little corner of Porter County. The Region has great tradition and we desperately want to make our mark. I don't know if BG will ever win the Crown Point sectional, but it won't be because we didn't try like hell.
  14. To anyone who really cares, pirateville included: Boone Grove is a small rural school in south Valparaiso that has some inherent wrestling problems, and I know we're not alone. While we're in the general vicinity of "The Region," we're not fortunate enough to have an established tradition in our sport where "numbers" really aren't an issue. We're a member of the PCC, Porter County Conference, where basketball rules, baseball and soccer are pretty good, football is virtually non-existent, and wrestling is still believe it or not in a "grassroots" stage. It's a great place, don't get me wrong, but it's very traditional and very resistant to change, particularly from an administrative and a "community" standpoint. Our high school program, like most, is a direct reflection of our middle school program, which also suffers from pretty poor participation. It's not from a lack of effort or bad coaches in my opinion, but rather from, quite literally, an athletic administration that won't cooperate. This year, our middle school basketball program has 60+ players, with an A, B, and C team at virtually each grade 6-8. When MS wrestling has low numbers, you can't help but see how low HS numbers will suffer the same fate. Until we figure out how best to solve this problem, I don't see any long term solution. We're hoping that by competing in our first season of varsity football next year, wrestling participation will improve, but 60+ MS basketball players in such a small school, 80% of which will never see the floor in HS, isn't helping. Wolves Wrestling Club, our youth program, is alive and well, but we're still a few years away from seeing the fruits of our labor at the HS level. We have a bunch of elementary kids who have been at it for several years, and we're trying to build on them. I hope Coach Line sticks it out long enough to reap the rewards he deserves, again, but only time will tell.
  15. I did see the scale in the bathroom; didn't use it, because junior went straight into the wrestling room as instructed. Like littlejohn said, it wouldn't have mattered anyway, how could we have known if the scale in the bathroom was consistent with the official scales? Since I'd really like to see this topic go away, this is it from me. The competitive level of Indiana wrestling is improving at basically all levels...some comments have been made that suggest it's good to make parallels between high school weigh-in rules/procedures and youth wrestling. That's okay with me, but...if you tried to host a high school tournament and didn't provide access to the scales prior to the weigh in...you would be promptly run out of town, it just doesn't happen. Good coaches get their kids on site early for the specific purpose of checking weights. Scales are different! The weights and measures people do their thing and certify scales...but there are still differences. This may be an "agree to disagree" issue.
  16. Fish: good post! I don't disagree with anything you're saying...in fact, I am not too sure that I agree with myself now! Had there been a check scale present, there might have been more blatant disregard for the ethics of the sport, and more people trying to cut weight off their kids in the hallways or the parking lots at Ben Davis. The enormity of putting on such an event is sometimes forgotten, I was super impressed this year by the professionalism and organization shown by the ISWA. The absence of a way to "check" your weight before the official weigh in just creates a little anxiety "not knowing" what the scales are gonna say, at any level! But, I got over it. Like many before me and many after me, I cut weight in HS and college, and I hated it...so anyone making excessive weight loss part of the norm for their kids is potentially guaranteeing that those kids will someday stop enjoying the sport altogether! GREAT STATE FINALS ISWA!
  17. Look people, in this sport, people cut weight...it's not a bad thing within reason and if it's done right...it takes discipline and it is what it is...turn your head if you want, but it is an inherent part of the sport. I think some of you are wrong to assume that it's not a big deal if a "young" wrestler just has to move up to the next weight class at state if they don't make their declared weight. "Hey, they're young...they're just here for mat time anyway!!!" I think that's a load of crap. I've said that to my son for the last three years, he's not buying it. Kids are a helluva lot smarter than we give them credit for. I am in no way a proponent of any significant weight cutting at all, regardless of age; unless you're fat of course, then lose all you want. But here's a scenario: Let's assume that wrestler X is a bantam who has been right around 51-52 lbs. all season and wrestled 55 in tournaments when a weight class had to be declared; but for the state meet wrestler X decides to cut back a little and wrestle closer to his/her actual weight at 50. He has responsibly done everything necessary to shed one or two pounds and reaches the goal of the 50 lb weight class. PROBLEM: mommy and daddy's scale was a little off and he weighed 50.1 when he entered the "the room of death" at the state meet. Oh well, X just goes up to 55 done deal.
  18. That's pretty bad to not have a check scale before sending kids into "The Room"...that's always been kind of annoying the way they treat weigh-ins like such a top secret area at state! We'll be brining our own digital, hope it's close enough!
  19. So...does the ISWA provide access to the scales at all prior to "officially" weighing in?
  20. Good call on Larsen from Hanover Central! Bet a lot of these "region" youngsters forgot about that guy, or were in diapers! He was like a long lost Hanson brother from Slapshot. Tough!
