If we are going to Vegas, and the actual season starts before then, do I need the AD to sign off on us going to the tournament.

When you say "the actual season starts before then" do you mean that the first day of official practices have started or the first day we can wrestle a match against another school has passed.

The IHSAA Out Of state competition rules are one of the biggest reasons indiana doesnt get as much love nationally....we cant bring in the big nationally ranked schools and we cant go to any big national tournaments...really grinds my gears

Well the contest season travel rule in particular, is definitely hurting our individual and team national exposure.  Sure, getting the topic off track but the question for this has been answered.

10-1 Out-of-State Contest Limitations

The address of out-of-state schools participating in a contest against a member school as well as the site of such contests must be within 600 miles round trip travel from the Indiana state line and shall be sponsored or co-sponsored by a member high school.

10-4 Mileage Limitation on Team Practices

Team practices out-of-state shall not exceed 120 miles round trip from the Indiana state line.

I can somewhat understand having a limit on how far team can travel for competition.  This helps ensure schools don't start going crazy on long expensive national trips, as well as, ensure not missing more of the school time due to traveling and attending distant events.  However, to not allow a team to compete against another team at a tournament within that travel range because that school happen to travel from outside the Indiana travel range doesn't make sense to me.  Who cares how far another team travels for the competition, it doesn't affect the Indiana team at all.  In my view just let other states worry about their teams and how the travel affects them.  I'm guessing this was done in an effort to force Indiana schools to mostly compete with other Indiana schools, with the assumption that boarder town schools would needs some leeway.  if that is the purpose behind this rule then just make a rule limited the amount of competitions beyond the travel zone to 1 or 2 a year.  That would be all most schools would ever attend anyways.  Just lifting that part of the rules opens up a few more bigger regional and even national events that Indiana schools could attend.

The first time a school/team can have an official contest in wrestling this season is Nov. 12th.  So the Freak Show tournament will occur be fore that date.  According the the wording of the IHSAA by-laws  this would be an event that is during the school year and out of season (contest season).  As usually consulting with an AD and bringing to light the wording of the by-laws is always a good safety precaution.

That being so the by-laws then stipulate that "Students may participate in non-school contests as individuals or as members of a non-school team in non-school contests provided that participation during school time is approved by the school principal or his/her designee."  Thus if you are missing any part of school to attend these out of season competition the administration is suppose to sign off on the missed days.  Basically a per-arranged absence issue.
