2011-12 Clinch Gear Preseason Rankings ? Updated 11/9

Published on November 9, 2011 by viratas   ?   29 Comments

With new information coming in regarding weights, we?ve updated the national preseason rankings.

Of course, these updates also reflect the bevy of prominent preseason tournaments that were staged in prepping for the regular year.

There are always some conflicting results; wrestler A beat wrestler B in one tournament, but lost to him in another. Many wrestlers who outplaced others in Fargo slipped behind them in Greensboro, etc, etc.

Someone once asked me, ?Is it fair to say that your rankings are the way you would predict the outcome if they all wrestled each other??

To which I answered, ?Absolutely not.?

Given the choice, there?s several instances where I?d take a guy ranked, say 9th, to beat someone ranked 5th. However the guy ranked 5th, in my opinion, has the better resume.

It?s the only fair way to do it, and a good example of the process that goes on in compiling rankings. It?s rarely ever clear-cut. And the plethora of contradictory placings might help folks understand that ?totality? of resume supersedes most everything else. That is: when there is a position discrepancy, rankings are a product of who has the longest and most proven track record coupled with enough recent success to justify their position.

Another thing to consider is the reduced middle weight this year. Of course, this is where a glut of talent is in high school wrestling. But in the infinite wisdom of the powers that be, a weight class has been erased in this region. The result is condensed talent from 126 through 145. Many very successful and credentialed wrestlers find themselves on the outside looking in. The honorable mention list could serve as a very respectable Top 20 in and of itself.

Likewise, the expanded upper weights are rather depleted. To be candid, the wrestlers in the back half of some of the upper weights have resumes that pale in comparison to those of the honorable mention kids at lower weights.

That being said, an interesting phenomenon has resulted in the weight changes. While 182 won?t likely be strong, unilaterally, across the country, the list of top flight guys in the rankings is extremely crowded there, with some 171lbers going up, and some 189ers dropping.

We?ll go weight-by-weight here, offering commentary, and, at times, a rationale.

If there are any questions or comments (and we?re sure there?ll be plenty), feel free to email me at willie@theopenmat.com or discuss them on our HS message board.

*Notes: Wrestlers are listed at the last weight they competed at unless reported otherwise. If a wrestler is listed at an incorrect weight, please notify us at the above email address.

*Honorable Mention list is in no particular order, but is not comprehensive. In essence, it?s a working list of athletes on my radar, and will be published only here, and at the end of the season.

106 ? With many guys moving up, there?s a host of new names here. Starting at the top, Tommy Thorn had a fantastic summer winning Fila?s, Fargo, and competing at the Cadet Worlds. There has been speculation that he and Bresser will move up to 113, and Darian Cruz is likely to be back down, but Thorn is our #1 here until further notice.

113- There are several new faces here as well. Other than Brooks and Wert, most of last year?s 112?s have moved up. Brooks and Tomasello split their Fargo and Super32 finals, with Brooks winning the latest meeting.

It may be a little surprising to some to see the phenom Valencia all the way up at #3 to debut, but he?s already posted a fantastic performance. Last month at Nuway Vegas, he beat a pair of ranked wrestlers, Micah Perez and Johnson Mai, who both placed top three in Fargo JR?s this summer.

120 ? This weight is sort of ?up in the air? as far as a true #1 goes. Although Roberts has a fine track record, his status at #1 is contentious; there are several comparable kids here all the way down to DiCamillo.

*Dalton Brady was originally slated to board at the Olympic Training Center and forego high school eligibility. However, those plans have changed and he will be wrestling in high school back in his native Arizona.*

126 ? Unbelievable. The talent here this year is obscene. There are half a dozen kids at 126 with credentials enough to justify a true #1.

Although he doesn?t compete in as many events as the others, Gulibon?s record is the cleanest, with two wins over Dance and two over Malone in the two years.

Dance won Fargo. And although he lost to Ashnault in S32 finals late, his 1st in JR Freestyle and 2nd in S32 trumps Ashnault?s 3rd in Cadet FS and 1st at S32.

Gilman went unscathed at Fargo, but he?s up a weight here.

132 ? No real surprises here. Grey had a great summer winning the spot on the JR World Team and taking 5th.

I went high with Joey Ward here. 1) Because he beat Squire for the state title and 2) because he was a whisker from making Super32 finals. And he looked great down there. Bull market on him.

Edgar Bright may be low for some. He did have a fantastic summer in winning the Fargo title over Ashnault. But he did take a loss to an unranked guy in that tournament and I?m always a little leery when kids go up in weight. Plus, his number of quality wins is still limited. That?s simply the difference between talent and resume. He?ll have plenty of chances to move up as there will be several ranked guys present at Ironman.

#2 was a tough call. But Skon?s loss at S32 (which he did avenge) gave Liberatore the edge.

152 ? Since winning the NHSCA JR title over DeAngelo, Minotti?s been out after having shoulder surgery. Expect him back late December, early January.

Schneider has been out even longer. Should surgery had sidelined him for his individual state tournament. But he?s reportedly ready to roll for early December.

Kingsley may seem rather low at 5. But he?s taken losses to both Murphy and Martinez recently.

Hammond had a disappointing state tournament, bad a fantastic Fargo. Consider that he?s just going to be Junior, and the three kids that placed ahead of him were all outgoing Seniors.

160 ? Chance has won everything this summer. Some said ?but it was only Cadets? when he won double Fargo titles. But he ran through a 160lb field at the Super32 that featured ten ranked wrestlers.

Joey Davis proved himself in the spring with his FloNats title and (more importantly) his finals win against then #2-Ian Miller. He also beat Isaiah Martinez twice this summer.

Jordan may just be as talented as anyone, at any weight, in the country. However, we haven?t seen him compete since his state tournament and outside of Ironman, he hasn?t had much resistance.

*Devon Gobbo, sadly, has opted for surgery after tearing up his knee at Super32. He?ll miss his senior season before he heads to Harvard.*

Griffin?s lone loss at S32 came to Dudley, who?s also up at 195.

HWT ? Status quo from last year. Although Vollaro outplaced him in Fargo, Black has owned their series meetings to the tune of 9-1.

Nick Nevills wrestled Black down to the wire twice at the Cheesehead last year. He then went on to win a state title in single-class California as just a Freshman.

Indiana got a lot of love in those rankings.

The increased participation in national events has helped get more names in the mix.  The inability to participate in most big name in season events (per IHSAA travel rules) usually hurts their rankings down the road though.  But, also TOM has tended to be more friendly to IN, since Willie hear's alittle more about our guys than some of the other ranking people do.

Wesley beat JAKE Scanlon and it was in Greco-Roman.

Thank you Y2, I was not there and thought it was freestyle...My mistake!! Are you saying these are not the same kids and both are from Iowa? I thought they were because prior to Fargo Scanlon was ranked on one of these ranking sites, and we knew him as Wes has wrestled him before.
