  1. We really need to come up with a way to fill our national teams. Heck.... we can't even fill our schoolboy team and the tournament is right here in Indy. The forfeits at the national level have to be a top priority for the powers to be. We can't wait until freestyle state to get these teams aligned. I would like to see some sort of freestyle and Greco camp or qualifier after high school state. This will allow us to get these teams full when everybody is still knee deep in the sport. The way I see it it, three things need to happen. 1. Rework the two tournament rule (make exceptions for our national team members and include rtc's as a way to qualify). 2. Pick teams earlier and hold workouts for the teams. I hate the crash course camps that we have now. Doing a three day camp and then wrestling 4 days at the national level is too much. The kids are dead in the last days. We do need to allow alternates. Getting all the matches at this level for 4 days is too much. All the top teams bring extra kids. As a team leader in the past, I would try to get kids to wrestle both styles. Heck.. My own son has done it. As I look back, I would not recommend a kid to do all matches over the four days. 3. Figure out a way to make the trip cheaper.
  2. Yep I was there... Great match up. These kids will contend for a spot at bankers life next season.
  3. Tough kid..... But not a three time middle school state champ.
  4. Over 100 wrestlers getting after it today!!!! Multiple state champs from multiple states. Pain train in the building. #TheCounty
  5. The Avon wrestling family would like to welcome two new coaches to the high school staff. Joining the staff are Zach Errert and Brian Smiley. We are looking for these outstanding and accomplished coaches to help lead the kids to the top. The Avon staff now includes 5 wrestlers that wrestled in the Big 10 and an Olympic referee. Israel Blevins (Purdue) Davion Peterson (Purdue) Brian Smiley (Indiana) Aaron Crane (Indiana) Jon McClain (Indiana) Zach Errert (Golden whistle FILA World Championships) We are proud and happy to have these new coaches here. Welcome to #TheCounty
  6. Wow... Outstanding staffs! Great job Danny and the rest of the ISWA.
  7. Great room last night. C-Red bringing energy like only he can. 40+ of Indiana's finest bringing it. Three of our Indiana high school champs in the room in late May. There is a reason why they are on top!!!
  8. Yes, I agree there is an issue. I have offered to take our thoughts to the ISWA. I want to help make things right. And again, my concern is an anonymous person trolling and ripping great guys. I was just wanting to see where he is, so maybe we can get a rep in his area to help him with his concerns. Again, trying to help solve problems. JMILL has clearly offered to meet with the guy. See... JMILL is an awesome guy that is just trying to help. JMILL is a doer!!! And I do agree with Dan.... AJ is absolutely right.
  9. Not at all all. Please go back and look at all of my post. I typically stay positive, offer up solutions, and help our youth as much as I possibly can. Like Mr. Hatch and Triple B I spend countless hours, and tons of my own money to help as many kids as possible to be the best that they can be. And yes... I have a smoking hot wife that I choose to spend time away from to help our youth (she is the best). I do so expecting no payback or acknowledgement from the wrestling community. I can honestly say that I have never accepted a dime for any coaching or team leading that I have done. With all of that said, I really appreciate what guys like JMill, Louis Rossbottom, Nick Hall, Danny Struck, and countless others do for our kids. As I stated above... I try to stay positive, but to have a nameless, faceless, troll ripping these great guys and their efforts gets under my skin. Back to the topic.... Don't talk about it... Be about it. We know that certain people aren't happy. Now we need actions to right the ship. I was at state to talk to the higher members of the ISWA. The funny thing is that not one other person was there to do the same. If this is truly an issue that we all feel passionate enough about it, to write 16 pages on a message board... Then let's step out from behind our keyboards or phones and make things happen. Matt Brewer
  10. Pretty sure that Tecumseh doesn't even have an ISWA club. I would like to know which club Dan is affiliated with so that maybe we can open some communication lines between his club and the ISWA . Hopefully that may help him with his concerns. Let us know which club you are affiliated with, and I will be sure that JMILL will do a great job communicating with them. Heck... I bet that he would be willing to go down there to address your concerns face to face (if you can not attend a meeting yourself). Just trying to put names and faces with screen names. That tends to add validity to questions or concerns. Otherwise the people that do not hide behind screen names, just consider you a TROLL!!!
  11. The question is....... who is Big Dan? Why is he so interested in youth wrestling a 1,000 miles from where he lives? I have a feeling that we will never know.
  12. #TheCounty was happening tonight. Saw a bunch of wrestling families out and about. Hope that you all enjoyed it (traffic and all). And yes.... Mr. B's is a great little spot!!!!
  13. BJ's Brewhouse is a chain but a great place to eat in Avon. La Hacienda for Mexican is solid. Charbonos for steak (my favorite) Papa Joe Juniors for Italian Sidelines for bar food (no kids allowed) Hirosaki for Japanese Opa for Greek Wings etc... For wings (good place to watch ponies) And don't forget that one of the teams in #TheCounty will be getting Skaggs and Brewer (he's fat) back this year.
  14. U of I tonight!!!! Be there!!!! Indiana university next week!!!! CIA and C-RED the following weeks!!!
  15. I think that it should be counted. Furthermore, I think that these weeknight tournaments may be just the thing to save Freestyle wresting in Indiana. After a long club season, it is very hard for me to sell people on sitting in a gym every weekend for two more months (when it starts to get warm again). If we could get a couple of freestyle practices and a mini tournament in during the week, it would help me to keep kids going. It will also help our studs to get more actual freestyle matches in during their national schedules. Here is what I picture: Four mats- Divide them into half mats (8 surfaces total). Cap the tournament at around 128 kids. Put the kids in groups of four (closest to weight). Put four groups of four on each surface. Each group wrestles round robin for 3 rounds (each group will have 2 matches per group per round). That will be 8 matches per round per mat. Should be done wrestling within 2 1/2 hours or so. Charge 10 bucks to wrestle, sell some corn and soda, and charge a small gate fee. Your club can pocket $1,000 to $2,000 on a week night. If we can get one or two clubs to do this in each section during freestyle season, I think that kids would learn to love freestyle. Scale it down and make it convenient for more people. Thoughts???
  16. Sounds good... So the next board meting we all show up, and let the ISWA know how much we hate the rule. We let them know that we speak for the majority of their members, and we get it changed. The board may be willing to meet with us all at state. They may be able to carve out some time to do that. On state weekends they do volunteer from 6 am to 10 pm on most state weekends. I'm sure that they can spare a few more minutes of their time (since they are doing it all for free). Oh... that reminds me. Freestyle is DYING!!!!! While we are, there we should present some alternate options to help save a style that we are passionate about. Who's willing to take a day off and go talk to the board to save our sport?
  17. Mr. Hull has listed and responded to all the complaints. Kudos for Nick for doing that. We all got our frustrations out to a high ranking member of the board. That's awesome!!! Now....... What can WE all do to fix it. Again, I am no longer a board member. But.... I will personally take down all of your suggestions on how to fix things, and will hand deliver them to all of the board members at state. Lets use our time and energy to do something productive. Many of you know me, and know that I put in countless hours helping out also. I always stay positive and will do anything for anyone. Help me get suggestions to help fix the issue. I will start with this one. "Please get rid of the two tournament rule or give exemptions to members of our national teams". Anything else???? Or will this one suggestion cure everything? Or do we need another 8 pages of criticism?
  18. Although I am no longer a member of the board... I was at the time when the two tournament rule was made. Hindsight is always 20/20. The rule was put into place with good intentions. Now if we had more of you guys at the meetings on a Sunday (most likely when the colts were on), to tell us what to do.... Then whole situation could have been avoided. With all of that said (and all that has been said over and over on this board). FREESTYLE AND GRECO ARE DYING HERE!!! Enough belly aching, and more solutions. By the post on this thread, we have a group of guys that are passionate about freestyle. I would love to hear ideas that the ISWA can put into place to help save these dying styles. Ok... I get it. The two tournament thing is bad. But... What can we ALL do to bring freestyle back??? If we get rid of the two tournament rule, it will go back to slowly dying. What can we all do to get it going again? We at Avon Wrestling Club have been kicking around the idea of week night tourneys next year. Although, many think that this years week night tourneys are not legit, I think that they could be an awesome way to get kids loving freestyle again. Please..... Let's here some ideas.
  19. Columbus East is solid going back to when they ripped the only kiddie state not to be won by #TheCounty from us! Really... The guys there now are the ones that were very tough as little guys. Those kids have been hitting the national tourneys for years now. They are mostly underclassmen, and are very tough. I predict the CE will have 5 state qualifiers this year. They are a good team. Wish my friends down there luck in the future!!!
  20. BTW... Someone suggested to me at Middle School Duals, when the Indiana teams wrestled each other..... "Hey, can we do freestyle this round, and count this as a qualifying tournament!!" Just thought that was really funny.
  21. Because us parents are crazy. Better to give folks a little room. But...hey.....if that is what it takes and kids are wrestling more freestyle then, I guess it doesn't matter. The bottom line is that freestyle is FUN. Tons of ways to score. Teaches kids to take better shots and finish. Once kids do it a few times... most of them absolutely love it. Just plain fun!!! No need to be shady. Do a weigh-in and give the kids as many matches as possible on a week night. Heck most of the kids are only getting a few matches on the weekend (if they win the thing).
  22. I would suggest this.... All you guys that can. Get a gym reserved within the next two weeks. Put out four surfaces. Have two sessions (from 5 to 7 and 7 to 9). Charge $15 bucks or so. Put the kids in groups of three or four. Let them wrestle round robin for three rounds. Pop some corn and get a cooler of pops to sale. Then...... Bam! You got your kids a second qualifying tournament and you walk away with a couple thousand for your club!!! As matter of fact.... I'm going to try to make this happen if I can. Seems like the same people are always on here poo pooing everything. Spend your energy to try to make something happen.
  23. Jones, I think that Kingsport helped their cause this year by allowing 6th graders. I think that Frank (the guy who runs that one) saw a fall off and made a change to boost his event this year. Prime example of making an adjustment to give your customers what they want. With this said, it appears that an adjustment or two may be in order to keep this event going strong. Not sure what they would be? Would like to hear some ideas from the folks that have been around this event.
