  1. Coach Hull, can you expand on the technical/philosophical trends comment? What adjustments as a state do you feel we need to make?
  2. I like the camps also, but I would say arrange them by the beginning date of the camp and make the dates prominently displayed. The "NEW" badge along with the last updated date is enough for me to see when something may have been updated that I need to read about, but it would be nice to see the camps and tournaments in chronological order. Thank you, that is all ;D
  3. If I had a nickel for every time I heard that...... ;D
  4. Sounds terrible. How did another parent make it so that your kids can't wrestle for the MS?
  5. Because there have been so many bad renditions at various sports events through the years, I just wanted to state that the young man who sang the National Anthem before the finals did a wonderful job. He didn't mess with it or "make it his own" with crazy vocals -- he just sang it as it was meant to be!! A wahoo to whoever booked him to sing it.
  6. So no printable state brackets on the regular site, only available through purchase?
  7. Great testimony BlueBolt And the next couple of weekends if you see an old-timer sitting in the stands, take a minute to greet them, ask who they are cheering for, and share some wrestling stories. Ours is a sport that builds some unforgettable bonds.
  8. The silence on this matter from any referees is deafening
  9. I think the best bet would be to get in touch with the referee that was "jumping on the scale to humor a coach" and get him to "man-up" and admit he may have altered the operation of a scale just before the most important weigh-in of this young man's career. I would hope that if he would come forward and admit to the action, you would have a very good case.
  10. With all 3 of those in the same weight class and presumably coming out of that sectional, there is going to be a rough matchup for one of the top placers in another sectional when they hit Regionals next week! Imagine if you finish #2, get to face a #3 only to see Moss or Duncan there waiting for you as a 3-seed. OUCH
  11. 12. Best of luck to Dre and your family
  13. If a given family/student moves to another school district, then I am actually not sure that any of the transfer rules (i.e. Grade Point Average, etc) apply any longer. After all, if a family member would have their job moved to another community (as many local auto workers did, for example) then regardless of the incoming student's GPA, they would be accepted as a non-transfer by having a permanent residence in the school district. I'm not sure what exactly the case was in the Alexandria/Yorktown dispute. I'm also not sure how the IHSAA by-laws for transfer apply to those where a student's family moves during the summer to a new school district. Again, I feel badly for the boy. If a student can benefit academically from a move that falls within established guidelines, then really who cares about the athletics part -- why punish the child? There are obviously a lot of issues at play in this case, but it comes across as if the young man is a pawn being shifted back and forth and at the whim of larger forces (IHSAA, 2 school districts)
  14. The Yorktown Community Schools school board policy on transfers is here: http://www.yorktown.k12.in.us/download.axd?file=0bb2f3f3-3aff-4c8e-9235-ed42fa3a7d94&dnldType=Resource The pertinent sections are (in my opinion): (From Page 2): The decision on acceptance of a non-resident student will be based upon: ? The student?s attendance record at the previous school; ? The student?s academic record at the previous school. For a transfer to third grade or above, and if the previous school recorded grades, the student must have at least a C+ (2.75 on a 4.0 scale) during the prior two years of school enrollment; those transfer students enrolled prior to or during the 2010-2011 school year or any prior school year, must maintain at least a C (2.0 on a 4.0 scale); ? The student?s discipline record at the previous school; ? Class sizes in the grade level in which the student wishes to enroll at Yorktown Community Schools; and ? Whether the transfer will place an undue burden on the Yorktown Community Schools. The transfer shall not place an undue burden on the Yorktown Community Schools. (From Page 4): 8. Reciprocal agreement between the Superintendents of both a sending and / or receiving corporation is required for any final approval. - and - C. The student may not have missed any more than five (5) days of school the previous semester from his/her sending school. The receiving school may consider exceptions for more than five absences due to medical conditions that can be documented by a physician but is not obligated to do so. D. The student may not have been tardy any more then five (5) times to school the previous semester from his/her sending school. Now, personally I disagree with the entire line about the determination of whether or not a student is requesting a transfer solely for athletic purposes. I view this as a purely subjective matter. However, it is a criteria that has been added to the policy, and as such should be enforced I suppose. Again, these citations are from Yorktown's transfer policy: (From Page 2): Requests by parents, guardians, or custodians of Indiana students who do not reside in the Yorktown Community Schools district but who wish to enroll their child in the school system will be considered for enrollment if: ? Non-resident enrollment is for educational reasons; (From Page 4): G. Under no circumstances will a transfer student be accepted for athletic reasons. Without any concrete evidence, all of the talk about coaches recruiting is hearsay. If it is true, then it is a shame that kids within the system who "play by the rules" may have to take a backseat to transfer athletes so that the team may be more successful. I believe that the criteria layed out is faulty -- the subjective clauses don't belong in there. If the student in question (or any student whether or not they are an athlete) meet the objective criteria, then they should be considered for transfer and allowed to participate in sports. There should be a system in place (verifiable) where any school system can show that if they do not accept all transfers, then there is a systematic method for choosing which students are allowed to transfer and it uses academic criteria as the primary determinant. Because the subjective criteria is included, it leaves the door open to interschool bickering. It is a real shame that whatever the reason, and which school is "right" and which is "wrong", there is a young man who is not able to participate in wrestling this year. 4 years is a short time -- most of us remember how quickly it can pass by. I hope that he does receive a first class education at Yorktown and is able to parlay that into future success.
  15. Any food or drinks included with the suite?
  16. Anyone know if the second edition of his book was published, or how to contact him?
  17. 2 Connersville wrestlers listed at 132. Irick from Hamilton SE won the John Hurrle memorial @ 182 lbs - you have him ranked @ 152
  18. Posted this on another thread. Ohio is changing their dual state championship format. The new format will be sponsored not by the coach's association but by the OHSAA - the equivalent of the IHSAA. Here is the information on the new format. Note in the letter that they mention: "By sponsoring a true team tournament we anticipate more youngsters participating in the future" http://www.ohsaa.org/sports/wr/boys/2011/LetterRegardingTeamTournament.pdf
  19. I liken the team series to the Ryder Cup in PGA golf. I don't typically watch many of the individual tournaments - because I am a casual fan Im not familiar with many beyond the top 3 or 4 big names on the tour. But when a group of guys starts competing as "Team USA" I am much more likely to follow the competition, and as a fan I am more interested in the non-marquee players' contribution to the squad, and the team strategy involved in setting the match ups. I would love to see a classed team tournament, which would allow for the smaller schools to have a shot even as they deal with unique issues like filling all the weight classes. The big schools could use their depth to formulate the best match ups. A smaller school dual championship could generate a lot of excitement within the community as they follow their TEAM hopefully to state. The 8-21 record heavyweight with a bazillions cousins and uncles is going to bring the crowd in to see if his might be the match that decides the dual for their hometown. I think this would be good for the sport of wrestling, and would get many more casual fans involved than the individual tournament does -- it is more for the faithful wrestling follower (and would remain so even if you classed it, in my opinion)
  20. Pennsylvania -- arguably the best wrestling state in the country. Yeah, they do a team tournament in one week during the middle of their season. First round is on a Monday, finals are on a Saturday. Rules: http://www.piaa.org/assets/web/documents/2011_TW_Memo.pdf More info, including last year's brackets: http://www.piaa.org/news/details.aspx?ID=2142 Come on IHSAA, Indiana athletic directors and coaches. This CAN BE DONE!
  21. As Indiana discontinues it's team championship series, one of the nation's powerhouse states - Ohio - is beginning a team dual championship format. One of the quotes from the press release: "Currently there are 600 OHSAA member high schools that sponsor wrestling for approximately 14,000 student-athletes. By sponsoring a true team tournament we anticipate more youngsters participating in the future." Check out the press release and the format they will use. Could it work in Indiana? http://www.ohsaa.org/sports/wr/boys/2011/LetterRegardingTeamTournament.pdf
  22. Don't be melodramatic Mr Richards, most of your posts are entertaining. Why claim you are going to leave (again) when you know you'll be back there is no way you are going to be able to resist. Best of luck to your son this final year, and to your team. Keep on posting and being a proud dad. Try a little harder not to make comments that tear down any other wrestlers or make excuses if your son happens to get beat. We get that you have a bond with Perry, Warren but they'll take care of their own business -- don't make claims that put a target on their backs. Have fun and enjoy the season!
