  1. It is not just Goebel. It was Coach Goebel and Coach Helfrich and I would take that combo every match not just Friday.
  2. I haven't made every team state dual meet, but I have not missed to many either, I can say this though from a team stand point, it doesn't get anymore exciting than watching 8 teams go after 1 title. The old format you never had to win a dual meet to win a team title. I would love for someone to shut team state down, and THEN go personally go tell PM, LN, MD, CP, Penn, Yorktown, Bellmont, the Cavemen, Franklin Comm. along with every school with a wrestling team, they were NOT actually wrestling for a STATE TITLE but only to raise money for the IHSAA. We wrestle to get our hands raised, we wrestle for the GLORY! not for the money.. If this was a money issue what is your actual overhead? You need use of a gym, use of a four mats, 8 ref's, and a solid group of volunteers (CC has done a great job with this every year, I must say), medals and trophies that are given to every State Championship and runner-up teams, a couple troopers, have some tickets printed up, make up some programs... doesn't sound like much to me considering your selling $10 tickets (well worth it if you never been)... Schools across the nation put on dual meet tournaments every year do they lose money? Long Live the right for ALL the wrestlers on 1 team to show the True Champion!!!
  3. Agreed. Tec falls are impressive, dont get me wrong, but what about the quick pins? The 20 seconds or less where you come out take them down, turn them over, and slap the mat? That's IMPRESSIVE!
  4. With this season just getting under way for some, my days on the mat are long gone, so now as I sit here looking forward to the final matches under the lights of Coseco and the classic dual meets of team state in Feb., I would just like to say Good Luck to all the wrestlers across the great STATE of Indiana. The only reason the season seems to last forever is because the memories will. While there are many reasons for choosing to wrestling, everyone has a common goal to WIN. Someone will win, someone will lose, some wins will be closer than others, so take pride in your victories but show respect every opponent; before, during, and after every match. Wins require three things: time, work, and will. Fear no one and always believe in yourself. If state titles were just given we would not need a season to prepare. The off season work is over, now is the time for the real fun to begin. It does not matter if this is your first year or your senior year, this is year is for all the GLORY! There is no need to look back at what you did the past years or look forward to next year, it will not do you any good, so focus on this year. Anything can happen in any match; stay calm, stay focused, and go all out. Learn from your loses as well as your wins. Work to get better everyday, do not allow yourself take a practice off. Listen and learn from your coaches. There are no do overs, this is your only shot for all the GLORY on the year. Just remember, no matter how your season may go, have fun, be respectful, and go all out everytime because no one knows what the future holds. As for now, it is time to make it YOUR year, this is for all the GLORY!!
  5. I agree with alot of that just not the last part. The smaller schools are "scared" to run with the big dogs. Thats kind of patrionizing in the expense of saying they cant compete. warrendad I agree with you, totally. Small schools can but not every small school believes that they can and uses school size as an excuse on what went wrong. That's why I say NOT every small school is scared of the bigger ones because of size. Its not because they cannot, its a matter of the mind if you got the players willing to put in the work.
  6. Class wrestling huh? NO size doesn't matter, its the school! Team Duals look the 2 that have been there the most Bellmont and Mater Dei, they have seen each other sometimes in other sports that have classes. Why, because both school are in 3A and 2A classes. How do you tell the person next to you, "Yeah, we had the best team in the state because we won the 5A championship," when you have the tradition of these two programs in lower classes or even New Castle for that matter (they made their appreances at team state), I do NOT believe you can. Teams or people cannot be scared of teams from a higher class and expect to win (we are HOOSIERS, they made a movie about it, different sport but none the less). Never be scared, Never back down are you will never make it that's the what I was always told. They only thing a class systems does is leave ?s on who really is the best. To say you are the best team with no doubt, everyone else has to fall. Yeah, you could do a tournament of champs the following weekend with excuses on it doesn't matter, our day was at state, injuries, etc.., so why not keep it in 1 weekend 1 TRUE TEAM STATE CHAMPION! Not every small school is scared to run with the bigger dogs!!!
  7. Why seed the tournament, finish it the way it started like all the other sports in Indiana, location. This is not college where only certain teams compete, everyone wrestles at sectionals, everyone had to beat someone to get here. Team State is Team State if you don't like it don't show up! Otherwise, show up wrestle your 3 matches, win and don't worry about those crying while walking out the doors about their draws. If you are this concerned about your draws, you better watch out for the team your over looking if you want to leave with any hardware from CG. Also, call the runner-up trophy what you want, it is what it is. The team was one of 2 teams to walk away with 2 wins on the day. If you seed the team then why wouldn't you be seeding the individual, there are 4 semi-state champs that show up on Friday I hear. You take what your given and you earn the rest!
  8. Hey could agree more BB. I have to say though I'm pretty excited about Sat. like every year, but (I'm only joking with you, this past Sat is over I'm actually still laughing about how sad some of the fans were) can we stay inside when we do this or do we have to follow the Castle guy to the parking lot? I'm sorry man that was low but I found this weekend very entertaining from the other side of the gym (some good matches with some poor sports going at it). All jokes side BB GOOD LUCK to you guys this weekend, your 215 is def. impressive.
  9. A team can change their during the meet, once a wrestler checks in at the table and steps in the circle the weight class is then locked. Remember though every wrestler (backups and regulars and if I'm not mistaken you are only allowed 21 kids for weigh-ins) have to go through weigh-ins and not to mention there are several regulations to the weigh-ins that can have a serious impact on the individual with the individual tourney, example of one, if a kid weighs 112 wrestles 130 now he cannot wrestle 112 Sat. because he recertified himself as 119 knocking him out of the Regionals by rule you are only allowed to bump up 2 weight classes.
  10. Didn't this happen the LN last year at the 160 class but it wasn't a situation liked you described with a skin related problem? I would think that would fall in the same category as an injury or treated as if the kid wasn't submitted into the lineup, I would say let 'em wrestle but I don't that call. I do like your question and hope we get an answer to it.
  11. It starts Sat. the postseason is almost here, its a magically time of the year full of surprises, sleepers, easy predictions, unknowns, and upsets. The only records that matter are the ones that at the end of each Sat for the next five weeks. The guy, you wrestle might be a senior or freshman with a great record or terrible record, it doesn't matter anymore, everyone 0-0 each weekend they advice. If you want to win state like every wrestler, don't look for it to be given to you in a FF, you have to earn it. The journey starts with sectionals and ends with Individual State and the State Dual Meet, watch out for the speed bumps in your quest to a title: bad draws, poor calls, and your own misQ's, don't let them beat you, leave no doubt. Believe you deserve it, you earned it, and you can beat anyone. Awake up all you sleepers, your time is now, don't get caught on your back or it might be all over, fight to wrestle another day. Don't listen to any boo's from the crowd just let it fuel the fire that burns your insides, make them watch you wrestle each weekend while their kid sits in the crowd now saying that should of been me getting my hand raised. He is only waiting for next year, your time is NOW. In the end, we all are after the same thing to wrestle under the lights of the fieldhouse, to be the reason other wrestlers' seasons are over while you continue to march on, beating the best to be the best, not just to make it to state but fulling your dreams of winning, to watch your mother cry full of pride as you stand on top of the mountain as the cameras flash with a blue ribbon around your neck and to see your name written on the line with CHAMPION underneath it, only 14 can say at the end of the night "I won." Respect those who you defeat by being a class act but remember you a TRUE CHAMPION because our sport has no class system in our GREAT STATE of INDIANA. After the Sat. night in the fieldhouse, the only thing left is 8 teams and 1 more Sat at Center Grove where the HWT's collide. It no longer matters what you did as an individual, who you beat or who you lost to, its all about the team and answering the question,"Who is the best team in Indiana?" Then when it is over, you might get one chance at a postseason run or four, make the most of each opportunity. Every year the postseason brings new faces so leave the maybe next year attitude at home, focus on now. Most wrestlers go home early, sitting around thinking about all the what if's, should of's, would of's, and could of's that just means its time to grap your gear and get ready for next year. As you get older, this chapter in your life will come to a close, your days on the mat as a high school wrestler will one day be over. You will still think about all the what if's from your postseason career and let the emotions that run wild every Feb. just like you where in high school again. Remember though, now your the adult, its your turn to watch from the stands, coach from the corner, and be supportive for ALL the wrestlers from every high school. This sport lives off your passion to compete, so encourage your opponents only to get better to raise the level competition. Clap for those who win and have respect for those that lose, always be a model of class and reject any ideas of a class system. But don't worry, you will always remember the thrills of the postseason from your Glory Days... Thanks for reading and GOOD LUCK to everyone this postseason
  12. mowingmama83 sounds like you need to get your parents together and take your concerns to the school's AD. If a coach feels he has nothing to offer some of his wrestlers and this is what you were saying, why is he coaching? If my son's coach told my son or me this you better believe it would of been addressed with the coach and then maybe talk with the AD. At every level in every sport a coach should feel it is his DUTY to make ALL of his players better from the best to the worst. Even the pro's still have a coaching staff for a reason. This is not intended to be negative, but in my opinion the tape is better from an angle higher in the in the stands (I feel with a little zoom and an overhead view you can see more, less blind spots on the tape). Most schools tape their matches to learn from them, some use more than one location for when the ref blocks the view, yes I agree with on the video being a good tool.
  13. Coaches are there to coach, everyone has his own style to the sport, let them coach. If the coach needs something from a wrestler's parents (example: the kid's seriously hurt), he will get you. These guys are in high school, its time to let go a little, talk to them after the meet. If the coach needs you on his staff, I'm sure he will ask you to help coach the whole team not just your son and for you to come everyday to practice, too. After that I call this "the John Elway Rule", Elway tolded his son's HS coach he was going to be the qb coach for his son while he was in school and the coach agreed because Elway has the rings to get the coach to agree that idea. So the way, I see it unless you have something similar to a couple Super Bowl rings, stay in the stands. If your not happy about something take it up with the coach, they might listen, they might not. But approach your coach in a civil manner with an open mind, if you want the coach to listen to you and your thoughts. Bad mouthing your coach does nothing but hurt the hurt the team, have some respect for the time and effort the coaches are putting in during the season. Its good for parents to share their passion for the sport with your kids, it can make them a better wrestler, I feel, by doing so. Now remember this though, your glory days on the high school mat are like mine OVER, its time to let your kids have their time to shine, don't be a distraction to that by trying to take over the coach's job the day of the meet even if you don't think you are, YOU ARE. If your needed the coach will let you know.
  14. I wore the tights all throughout my career, I am a fan of them. I'm like drewboy, I'm "hairy like animal" and NO, you will never catch me shaving my legs to give me less friction, I'll wear the tights. I wear them for the same reason a guy wears the knee pads, comfort (its what I was use to). Points are not awarded for wrestlers that look the best for the crowd. Its all about winning, as long as you feel comfortable with what you got on, go with it. I never steppeed on a mat hoping my uniform was to everyone in the crowds' standards, I left that to the coaches on what our team wore (I just hoped they didn't give us the ugliest ones there). Kids are there to wrestle if your winning with the tights keep 'em, if you don't feel comfortable in them ditch 'em (if your coach lets you). If you think they give the other wrestler the advantge, get you a pair. If you feel the tights give the other guy the advantge, he does have an edge, mentally you think he is better than you because of the tights that's his edge. I'll say this though I would rather wrestle a guy wearing the tights or knee pads over a guy who is all greased up. Some people go a little over board with the kinshield or whatever skin protection they use.
  15. Craig Weinzapfel MD freshman year wrestled on the jv and freshman team only to go on to win 2 state title and finish 3rd his junior yr
