  1. I would have to agree that it is totally unethical, especially as an administrator. And it would probably get swept under the rug the first time or two, but a pattern of this behavior on a coaches part and the school board might take notice. I personally would talk to the coach first and see what he has to say. If it isn't settled there I would file a formal complaint with the school board and the IHSAA. The school might be able to keep it in house but the IHSAA is a different story. I have also seen instances where a wrestler who plays football is trying to keep his weight down for the wrestling season and the football coaches encourage (putting it nicely) the athlete to gain weight to better themselves and the team for football. Also unethical in my eyes. It is the athletes decision to make, not the coaches.
  2. Yes, congrats to MV for back to back Big 8 titles. Coach Gilpin and the other coaches should be proud. They have really turned that program around. Not saying MV will contend for a state title aytime soon, but they have an excellent feeder program going now and are seeing great results from it. Future is looking good. As for Ruggeri, who knows. Have heard conflicting stories on him, I guess time is the only thing that will tell us.
  3. Hey Y2, Any chance of having some sort of Certificate of Wresting Achievement made for this young man (Both of them actually!). I think this deserves some love from all of us!!!!! All though my vote probably doesn't mean much, I would like to nominate Hunter Bartley as Indianamat.com's Wrestler of the Week. I encourage all to nominate him. He pinned the #2 kid in the state.
  4. http://www.courierpress.com/news/2009/jan/19/mater-dei-wrestler-zenthoefer-back-track-after-inj/ Mater Dei wrestler Zenthoefer back on track after injury By DAVID JACKSON Monday, January 19, 2009 Zeke Zenthoefer remembers the annual pilgrimage to the Mater Dei High School gym to help welcome the Wildcats? wrestling team home from a state championship. Sitting in the bleachers as the team entered the gym from the far end, championship trophy held aloft, the young Zenthoefer looked on in awe as the heroes received the community?s praise. One day, he thought, that would be him. ?I looked at those guys and thought about how awesome it was, and then when you finally get (to Mater Dei) you start thinking about how it?s your turn to take the tradition.? It all looked good for Zenthoefer during his first varsity season two years ago. Wrestling in a very tough 125-pound weight class as a sophomore, he barely qualified for the Castle Regional by finishing fourth in the sectional. He proved he belonged by finishing second at Castle, then advanced to the state meet at Conseco Fieldhouse by placing fourth at semistate. Zenthoefer suffered a difficult overtime loss in the opening round at state, but was encouraged by the fact his opponent went on to finish third. ?I took more positives away from that than negatives,? he said. ?He (East Central?s Joe Hollstegge) was a good wrestler and he went on and finished third. That gave me encouragement and after that I just set goals for coming back my junior year and placing.? The goal died behind North High School on a nondescript September afternoon during a reserve football game against the Huskies. Playing safety, Zenthoefer picked up a North receiver running a fly pattern. Pivoting out of his backpedal to shadow the receiver about 15 yards downfield, Zenthoefer felt a pop in the back of his leg. ?I really didn?t think anything about it until I tried to get up,? he said. ?That?s when I felt the pain. Initially thought to be a hamstring injury, an MRI revealed a fracture in the posterior pelvic area. Zenthoefer was given the choice to either wrestle the upcoming season in pain or sit out his junior year. There was no choice. He came to find out rather quickly there also was no chance. Feeling a dull ache in such simple acts as sitting down, Zenthoefer would feel sharp stabs of pain in a variety of positions on the mat. He clearly was not the wrestler he had been a year earlier. ?I tried to do everything everybody else was doing, but I couldn?t run as fast and it hurt when I got in certain positions so I couldn?t wrestle the way I wanted to,? Zenthoefer said. ?I had to change my style around and I just couldn?t wrestle to my potential.? Zenthoefer may have started for many schools, but not at a place where champions seem to stand ready in every shadow. Unable to overcome the handicap, Zenthoefer continued to work out with the team and step in when needed, but for most matches he was relegated to the bench while Adam Weinzapfel handled duties at 135. ?I?m usually a pretty outgoing guy, but I got a lot more quiet after that,? Zenthoefer said. ?That was a difficult time for me to sit and watch. I had a lot of goals and I didn?t have any chance of fulfilling them.? Finally healed, Zenthoefer is intent on making the most of his final chance to walk across the gym floor with the championship trophy held aloft. Ranked seventh in the state at 145 by IndianaMat.com, Zenthoefer has compiled a 26-2 record, losing decisions in tourneys in St. Louis and Cincinnati against top-flight competition. With the tournament season set to begin Saturday with the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference meet at Castle, Zenthoefer?s focus this week is adjusted by the past. ?I can?t be satisfied with anything to this point because you don?t know what?s going to happen tomorrow,? he said. ?There?s nothing I can do about last year, but it taught me that you need to do everything you can when you have the chance. ?Going through what I did last year drives me to work harder everyday because I don?t want to have any regrets when this is done.? n You can reach David Jackson by e-mail at djackson6218@gmail.com
  5. cubwrestlingfan1, go to the topic "ASK THE RANKING GUY". He explains in depth what he factors in to his rankings and you can also ask him any questions you may have concerning the rankings.
  6. coachgilpin, just for the record, i am a fan of yours. i just am not a "fan" of some of the coaching techniques during meets. Like you said, running a program is always easier from the stands and that is where i sit. i personally just like to see more involvement from the coach during the meet. might not mean a lot to you but it might to the kids and the parents of the kids wrestling. being a head coach is a very political job, like it or not. i think what you have done with the MV wrestling program in the past two years is remarkable. i in no way think that you are a bad coach, because to take a program from where it was to where it is now is remarkable. you obviously know what you are doing, or else you wouldn't have led MV to where they are now. Best record in school history. And I know you are trying to get more powerhouse programs on the schedule. good luck to you and the program in the future. like i said, i am a MV fan and always will be. i guess i was just using some constructive criticism. this probably wasn't the best place for it. good luck at big 8 and i hope the wildcats can bring a conference title home.
  7. HWT from MV Alex White is still undefeated.
  8. I totally agree that a wrestler will learn more by going out and wrestling and getting beat than by sitting out the match to try and better his seeding for the sectionals. In the case of MV yesterday, injuries did play a part in a few kids not going out to wrestle, but they did also dodge some opponents that I feel they should have wrestled. They may have been beat but they could learn a few things about the other kid to take back to the practice room to work on. By allowing the opponent to take a forfeit or wrestling a less skilled wrestler you learn nothing for yourself. It may not always work out but I think that teams should have to set a lineup before each match and then that is what they go with. I watched a kid stand near the scorers table waiting to see who the other team sent out before the coaches decided who they were going to send out to wrestle him. As for the MV coach you speak of showing enthusiasm, I should probably note that is the head coach of the junior high team and an assistant for the high school. The head coach for the high school sits in his chair and rarely gets up. I would also like to extend a Congratulations to the MV HWT Alex White for setting the all-time school record for wins in a career.
  9. You probably heard right cut em. They did sit some kids. They had a kid who had recently chopped off half his finger during a class, they had a kid with an injury unknown to me but he also had ringworm and was not able to wrestle anyways. The tournament also served as a part of the teams senior day so (although I disagree with wrestling somebody who hasn't earned the spot) the HEAD coach decided to give some of the seniors a chance to wrestle some varsity against a team who they knew to be superior. MV had just been handled by Reitz, and Castle had Reitz's number today. So the chances of a regular varsity lineup against Castle still wasn't going to be good enough. Even their new STUD (term used lightly) @171 was beaten against Castle. I thank you for thinking that MV has a great team, at least some people recognize that. However, the HEAD coach does not. He has a select group of kids he recognizes and the rest of the team is political and trying to please parents. Let the flood gates open to any MV fans who want to disagree. For the record, I am a graduate of MV, a fan of MV and will always root for MV. These are just my opinions from the outside looking in.
  10. forget the score but castle won...sorry not more info.
  11. This has always been a pet peeve of mine and I was just wondering what other people thought about the subject of parents on the sidelines during meets. I personally think that parents have no business being on the sidelines during any meet. If the parent wants to talk to his/her kid about their match, then they need to wait until after the meet/round is over. Let the coaches who were hired to coach talk to the kids before or after their match, but I think the parents should remain in the stands. They only serve as a distraction to their kid supporting the rest of the team. This touches on another topic about kids leaving the bench to talk to family and loved ones. While wrestling is an individual sport it is also a team sport. That is what sets it apart from all other sports.
  12. 103:Kuhn (ER) 112:Moody(ER) 119:Johns(ER) 125:Henderson(MD)/ Rueger(ER) will challenge 130:Weinzapfel(MD) 135:DeHaven(EM) 140:Simms(MD) 145:Zenthoefer(MD) 152:Ritter(ER) 160:Easterling(MD) 171:Wedding(EM) 189:Fentress(ER)/ Sandwith(EM) and Price(NP) could also challenge 215:Ruggeri(MV) 285:White(MV) I mentioned in a different discussion about Dakoda Choate from Mt. Vernon @ 171. Was just cleared to wrestle varisty. Moved back to MV from Kentucky. Was a State Champ last year beating a previous state champ to win. This is definitely a tough sectional to try and pick the winners. A lot of quality kids in each weight class. Should be an interesting day of wrestling. I can?t wait.
  13. Wrestling 63% Basketball 20.6% These results remind me of a t-shirt I saw along time ago when going to freestyle tournaments...The sight I adore on a basketball floor, is wrestling mats from door to door. Might sound silly coming from a t-shirt but I honestly believe it. There is no better sport than wrestling. It is a test of just how good you, as an individual, really are.
  14. He is Aaron's older brother. Hasn't had any varsity yet this year that I know of. He should definately give Wedding a run for his money I think. Not to familiar with what type of wrestler he is, all I know is that he was a State Champ in KY last year after beating a returning state champ. I am in no way saying he is going to beat Wedding, because he is a stud, but it should be interesting to see what kind of draw he recieves for sectionals. It would be a shame to see him paired with Wedding right off the bat. I researched Dakoda Choate on Kentucky's wrestling forum similar to this one and it seems alot of folks down there weren't too impressed with him and said he got a lucky call go his way in the state finals. I guess we will just have to wait and see what comes of this at sectionals.
