  1. Valpo hires Johnson as coach Valparaiso High School product Mark Johnson was officially hired as the Vikings' wrestling coach Tuesday. Johnson wrestled four years at Valpo before going to Butler, from where he graduated in 1988. He was an assistant coach at Griffith from 1994 to 1996 and served in the capacity at Valpo in 1997 and 1998. Johnson headed Valpo's middle school wrestling program from 2004 to 2006. Johnson replaces Todd Evans, who resigned during the summer.
  2. By Jim Peters jim.peters@nwi.com, (219) 548-4363 | Tuesday, April 14, 2009 | (5 comment(s)) As hires go, Peter Haring thinks he's hit a home run with this one. The Calumet College of St. Joseph's Athletic Director may have socked a grand slam with the hiring of former Portage and University of Minnesota wrestling standout Leroy Vega as the first coach of the school's new sport, as first reported on nwi.com. http://nwi.com/articles/2009/04/14/sports/college/doc17c6975c138176b4862575980015065e.txt

He was even better his junior and senior years. Payne, a 140-pound wrestler for Michigan City, went 59-12 in his final two years with the Wolves, including a pair of sectional championships, a regional championship and a pair of trips to the semi-state ticket round. Payne finished with 117 career victories. That is believed to be the most in school history since the consolidation. Those accolades, plus his hard work and talent, landed him an opportunity to wrestle at Wabash College next fall. http://thenewsdispatch.com/main.asp?SectionID=8&SubSectionID=96&ArticleID=22309
  4. QUIROZ BORN TO WRESTLE 2008-09 The News-Dispatch Wrestler Of The Year Nick Dettmann Staff Writer Growing up, Chesterton's Anthony Quiroz did push-ups, sit-ups and chin-ups at home with his father, Jimmy, watching over him. Jimmy Quiroz was a star wrestler at Whiting, graduating in 1992. He was ranked in the state polls at 140 pounds in his senior year and qualified for semi-state multiple times. The younger Quiroz said his dad always wanted him to get into the sport his father loved. http://thenewsdispatch.com/main.asp?SectionID=8&SubSectionID=96&ArticleID=22056
  5. what days and times is the mat open at portage? Is this also being held at merrillville? If so what days and times?
  6. maybe they had a wrestle off ??? ??? ???
  7. so why do you think he avoided payne, he already had beat payne at DAC ??? ???
  8. I hate to prolong this topic, but I cannot resist. That said, I disagree that shaking the other coach's hand is necessarily good sportsmanship. It can be, but it isn't always. I don't think a kid is necessarily being a good sport because he is forced to shake someone's hand. And sometimes the kids don't mean it and only swipe because they have to. As I said before, I would be much more impressed if a kid took it upon himself to do it on his own time. Otherwise, I'm really not impressed by it and I don't think it automatically proves good sportsmanship. I hope you see the distinction I am trying to make. i say each coach should shake each others hand after each match ;D ;D
  9. Richmond destroyed payne at dac.
  10. you thought he looked good? where were you SITTING at semi state?
  11. as much as id like to see payne go to state i dont think this one will be any closer than 6 points in sanderfur's favor yeah, its really unfortuante for Payne but ya know, even if he wasnt against Sandefer, he'd have either Surma or Richmond or Hall and he hasnt beaten any of em Payne has not wrestled Surma or Hall this year, he lost to Richmond by one point at the DAC final. He had a chance to redeem himself, but Richmond was bump up to 145 during the the last dual meet of the year. I believe he did beat NACO though LOL ;D ;D ;D
