  1. Really cross country and swimming?  Would this be only for the team competition and would everyone still participate in the same State tournament.  I can see the logic in a room full of iron sharping iron argument for classing wrestling.  But swimming and cross country all you need is yourself for the individual side of it.

  2. Eww eww I got a response.  This is fun.  Maybe we should start a yearly thread that we can have both Illinios and Indiana people post on and we can really get the pot stirred up and build some hype behind these duels.  I would love to see it. FYI I also wrestled in college in Illinios for a year.  So I do have respect for them but I stick by my "piss on em" statement. :)

  3. Angel, my favorite wrestler of all time. Wish he would have married my sister...

Hahaha!!!! Blane has all rights to talk about Angel also. I believe he tangled with him a few times. By far Angel is my favorite Indiana wrestler. I truly believe he is the best we have ever had. Would love to see him come back someday and build a program.

  4. I agree with the Y2 on this topic.  You have to love it before you learn it. At the youth club stage it is all about getting some fundamentals in and making sure they enjoy it.  Not to say that some kids don't respond better with competition in order to feel like their working towards something.  But there are definitely kids it will cause more harm than good.

Can you say sharks and minnows!!!

  5. This is the one I am interested in.  I don't know anyone that has tried it.  I know a person that sells these and I can get you the pricing for it if you need.  You can teach your team how to throw with them so the next time you wrestle Prairie Heights you guys can have a launch fest.

  6. Coach,

I really am not trying to upset you, and I will agree that most if not all unbiased wrestling fans would say that the call was not a good one. And it is very unfortunate when it happens at a level of this magnitude.

But the point that I was trying to make earlier is that I just don't think there is anything anyone can tell you that will result in you &/or anyone else now having a clear cut understanding (with absolutely no gray area) on what the ruling is &/or should be. No matter what changes are made &/or wording and pictures that are used, there is always going to be different interpretations between different people. That does not mean that changes &/or clarifications are not justified, just that the expectation to clear this up beyond all doubt is not achievable.

What I will suggest, that may not be real popular in certain circles, is that what is truly needed here is not rule changes but more/better training of the officials. But realize that this is much easier said than done, and it would not completely resolve the issue of "gray area" either.

No worries.  That comment was not directed to you.  I appreciated your input.

  7. The call was made, the wrestlers decided the winner. If the official determined that their was loss of control, I see no problem in letting them duke it out in overtime.

Do you think I am kidding about wanting to know the actual ruling on this?  Please don't respond with philosophical opinions on how the situation should be handled after the fact.  I want opinions on what the ruling really should be here.  There should not be a grey area.  If there is then we need have the rule defined better possibly with pictures.  So far the general opinion has been that this is an opinion call.  Is that really the way it should be?

  8. I have seen Angel Escobedo at state finals roll around on his back for over a minute trying not to get stuck. I cant even remember who he was wrestling. Im not sure if I have ever seen a match with as much talent as these two kids have. I could see multiple NCAA championships from both these wrestlers in the future.

This type of match is what makes Indiana wrestling great!

Would that be the Shane Perky match?  Angel was a blast to watch.  It was like he would decide before hand on what technique he was going to drill during a match.

  9. At the end of the day, nothing can be changed about the result of this match. Both boys wrestled well, and it simply came down to what the ref saw.

We know that, we have been wrestling and coaching long enough to know when the hand is raised it is over. We are honestly looking for a true ruling. If it is a escape we will argue this for my wrestlers in the future. If it is not then we want to correctly argue this ruling in the future if it happens again. Maybe it will help someone else also.

  10. This is the position we ended up in for about the last 20 seconds.  At no time did his head pop out.  There was one moment where Drake did not have the far leg but there was never any separation, his head was still tucked, and he was not behind.  The match ended in almost this exact position.  We know you have to take it out of the refs hands but it is pretty hard to tell that to the kids relatives when you don't have an explanation for it. We accept the loss no matter what but in all honesty I want to know if we are wrong for thinking this was not the right call.

  11. I think having a small committee of people meeting after the semi-finals to decide the final match would be great. Most years it wouldn't take more than 30 seconds to decide which match to have last. You don't need to have a random draw, just assign it. They are the IHSAA they can give themselves an exception from the rules.

I've worked with ESPN for the NCAA finals and they LOVE having the last match as something meaningful.

This is exactly what I am thinking. I would like to nominate myself to this committee. :)

  12. Just had another email reply to clarify everything.

    Straight from the email.

Coaches of athletes who do not advance to Saturday will receive a complimentary ticket. This can be picked up in the main lobby at the coaches will call. You must provide a photo ID. If you plan to attend both session II and III on Saturday, you must receive a ticket before each session from the will call.

Nice job Culp on poking the bear! This actually makes sense.
