We are down to one maybe two kids wrestling at freestyle state and one kid wrestling at Greco state. Last year we had 11 at freestyle state. The year before that we sent 12. Two tournament rule wiped out pretty much our entire group of guys that wanted to wrestle (14).. It is what it is.. Just going to focus on Summer Folkstyle team camp we have coming up.. Hopefully this ridiculous qualification rule is gone next year..
-
What frustrates me is that people are defending a rule that we all know has been ineffective and making Freestyle/Greco participation worse.. Again I am not bad mouthing the ISWA or anyone who was on the panel who created the rule. They tried an idea and it didn't work as planned. But when people defend the rule that makes those in power feel that the rule is maybe being effective. It's not.. Here's an idea, get rid of the rule and start thinking of another solution. Stop beating the dead horse..

It's not hard, just get rid of rule. No reason to argue about it. The rule is not doing what it was designed to do. All it's doing is making the State Tournament worse than it already was. Last year it was a ghost town at Freestyle state. I am not bad mouthing the ISWA as I understand the intentions were good but the reality is the qualification system did not work and is simply causing more problems than the positives that it brings.

It is unfortunate as I really enjoy freestyle state. Over the years we made Freestyle State a big deal and we normally sent 10-15 kids to compete. This also helped keep kids in the room in the off season since they were training for something. This year, many of our kids could not get the 2 qualifying tournaments because the combination of Spring break, SAT, Scholastic Duals, other National tournaments. This year we may send 1-2 kids to Freestyle State. Disappointing.. Change the rule. It is doing more hurt than good.

Probably should specify if we are talking about the individual tournament or team tournament, or both.

Give coaches that have kids still wrestling on day 2 the different color wrist band to get onto the floor/able to get into the matside area but still allow coaches with day 1 wrist band into Bankers Life through the side entrance but not onto the floor/matside area.. How hard is that?

I'm not hating on the conversation. But it's been done over and over and over, w/ no real results.
Exactly what I was trying to say. We have IHSWCA Team State. Lets focus on that and calling those teams the state champions. If the IHSAA does not want to entertain the idea of creating a team state then so be it. IHSWCA Team State is the Team Super Bowl for our team and we are ok with that.
-
So the team (my best 14 vs your best 14) that wins the head to head dual meet is not the better team. But the team that scores the most points in an individual tournament that may only showcase each teams best 5-8 wrestler is? And in your opinion this is strictly because the dual meet tournament is not at the very end of the season and it's not ran by the IHSAA.. Got it..

Yeah the whole idea of using an individual tournament to prove who is the best team just doesn't work all of the time. Some teams bring less to state because they come from a tougher regional/semi state etc. then like mentioned above, you have to root for kids from other schools to beat kids from the team you are trying to out score. That whole set up just is not (in my opinion) the way to crown a team state champion. One year I was coaching at Anderson Highland, we sent 3 to state and each placed high. We finished 4th, or somewhere close to that, in "team scoring". We were a solid team but not sure we were 4th best in state.

When we stop treating the IHSAA Individual State Point leader like the Team State Champion then I think we will start making some progress. This may sound crazy, but I wonder what the IHSAA would do if the team that scores the most points at Bankers Life decided not to accept the IHSAA Team Champion trophy.

Are we talking about competing for a spot on the individual state podium or competing as a team?

Hospitality room may be one of the top in the State.. Our parents do an amazing job!
-
If both kids indeed make it to the finals I think changing the order would be a great idea.. IHSAA needs to make this happen.

North Montgomery Holiday Tournament will be scheduled around team state. We will set our tournament date once the team state date is set.
-
Go after team state not costing invited teams 2 weigh in points. That would help some programs tremendously when it comes to scheduling.

I have attended all four IHSWCA Team State Duals and in my opinion the Ft. Wayne Coliseum has been the best facility. There are a couple small tweeks that I am sure the tournament director/coordinators will make that will help tremendously with seating. I received the impression from my athletes that the coliseum felt more like a state championship tournament facility than Westfield or Ball State. When we walked into the coliseum many of our wrestlers faces instantly lit up. I have always believed that if you treat a tournament like the super bowl then it becomes the super bowl, and for our kids the facility made that more true for them than in years past. Like I said, there can be some small tweeks made to make the facility even better like moving team seats to the center facing each other rather than on the sides of the scorers table which may allow the side bleaches to extend down further opening up 3-4 more rows of seating. Or moving the team food location somewhere else as well as the tournament directors stage which would allow there to be bleachers on both ends of the mats.

Thanks to all the participating teams for taking a chance on our new format. Our tournament director, parents, Pendleton Heights (allowing us to use their score clocks), and our administration, and wrestlers did a great job running the tournament. We have a couple tweeks to make which will hopefully make the tournament even better. Maybe even looking to add four more teams next year and beefing up the awards as well. Excited for next year's tourney!!

When printing the form from my school computer, the bottom script that contains the date (Approved April 2015) gets cut off. I did not notice this until after sending a kid to get checked out for poison ivy. The kid was almost denied to compete today because of that. It would be nice if that date was placed somewhere clearly visible in the middle of the paper so there is no future problems with printers.

Does Purdue host an RTC tomorrow 7-830pm? If so, are high schoolers allowed to attend?

Are we counting Evansville Matre Dei in the "small school" category when crunching the numbers? This is a serious question as I have not followed the thread enough in its early stages to know if they were categorized as a small school or big school.

Why not do it now? Why prove you can win an easier title first? Maybe that team can win a 3A title, but you'll never know if you don't move up now.
When we prove that we can win/dominate the division we are in now we will move up. We are nowhere close to being the dominant team or even a consistent top team in our division. We have ALOT of work to do to get our program to that level. If we ever get there we would move up.

Ok, I wasnt up on the facts. I just assumed that he won a title when it when Swain 358 said he wouldnt of been happy with a classed title. Why would you use somebody as an example that wouldnt be happy about about winning a non-classed title when they didnt even win a classed title.
I used that example because someone else said that my example of state level kid from a small school (Nick Borta) would have been just as happy winning a state classed title as winning a one class title.

Coach where did Nick go to college at? If it isn't a D1 school are you thinking he will throw his National Champion medal in the trash since the NCAA has classed wrestling if they were to ever hand him one. That kid was a workaholic from what i hear and seen of him. I bet he would of been proud to be a classed state champ and a classed NCAA champ.

Nick Borta is in the Air Force and again since I am more qualified than you to commit on what Nick Borta would have wanted, I will tell you that he would not have been as happy with a classed individual title. If you would like, I could call up his dad and have him post his answer to that question for you as well.
Let's bet 1000 dollars on that. Guarantee you I would win your bet.
