  1. Agreed, but it looked like Porras could lose 5 lbs easier than Cashe (but I was a good distance away). Cashe looked cut, Porras looked big (if that makes sense?) Only to someone that spends anytime around wrestlers would that make sense, it makes perfect sense to me.
  2. http://web1.ncaa.org/onlineDir/exec/sponsorship?sortOrder=0&division=1&sport=MWR Here is a link to the NCAA web site that lists all D-1 schools that offer wrestling, they also have a list there for D-2 and D-3 schools, with links to each schools sports web site. Many of the schools have recruite me questionaires that you can fill out to get them some basic info. you should have in advance someo of the following items. High School name address, phone number High School counselor, and coach name and number act score, sat score registration to the clearing house and registration number list of accomplishments club coaches, and numbers academic information, class rank, GPA Number of siblings, age of siblings, name of siblings Some of these sites ask some rather interesting questions, be prepared, and have all of the above info ready to go in a way that you can access it rather quickly.
  3. They have a special deal worked out for the barn, it is not available to them for that price any other time of the year. As far as schools here in indy that could host this. you have a few with the room for the mats, but I am unsure if there is enough room for the spectators. The fieldhouse at warren can hold 12 mats for the schoolboy duals, with no chairs in between them, maybe 2 more total which gets you to 14, plus if you put 5 in the main gym, you can get 18, but no seating anywhere in the fieldhouse, and traffic flow would be a mess inside the school. I have not seen Bed Davis' new facilities, but every school here runs into some sort of problem with space.
  4. That happend with me a long time ago. I dont coach as much as provide feed back on what I am seeing out there as far as how he looks, the positions he gets in and I ask him to explain why he went this way or that way, as much for my own info as for making him thnk about what he did and why.
  5. While I enjoy eating deer meat, I think that when it is 75 outside it is too cold to spend a day sitting in a deer stand.....but feel free to bring some deer chili down to the state meet, I would be more then happy to eat it with ya.
  6. city wrestling meet It's a family affair for the McGinleys in city wrestling meet Cathedral coach watches nephews and cousin triumph as his fifth-ranked team rolls to victory By Paul Shepherd / Star correspondent Posted: December 21, 2008Post a CommentRecommend E-mail Print Share Del.icio.us Digg Reddit Yahoo Google A A It was a good day for the McGinley family Saturday at the City wrestling finals, but not everyone in the McGinley clan could be victorious. Cathedral coach Sean McGinley watched his fifth-ranked Irish capture their ninth consecutive City crown with 346 points to runner-up Tech's 270 at Howe High School. Gavin McGinley, Sean's nephew, took the individual title at 145 pounds. Tony, cousin to the coach and Gavin, won at 140 pounds. http://www.indystar.com/article/20081221/SPORTS0212/812210377/1169/SPORTS0212 From The Indianapolis Star
  7. county wrestling meet Perry Meridian has to battle for wrestling crown By Steve Brooks / Star correspondent Posted: December 21, 2008Post a CommentRecommend E-mail Print Share Del.icio.us Digg Reddit Yahoo Google A A The final team standings showed that Perry Meridian won Saturday's Marion County Wrestling Tournament in decisive fashion. But the host Falcons had to work almost every second for most of their six individual titles. The Falcons won three finals matches by three points or less and narrowly avoided being pinned in two contests. Despite all that, the third-ranked hosts won their fourth consecutive county crown going away, rolling up 271.5 points to easily outdistance No. 8 Lawrence North (182). http://www.indystar.com/article/20081221/SPORTS0212/812210380/1169/SPORTS0212 From The Indianapolis Star

  9. My interest has been piqued.....
  10. Would use of a condom be considered stalling?
  11. Something that worked for us when my son was that age, and still to this day, if you can accomplish it since you are coaching so many other kids. I was a parent for 1/2 hour after a tough loss, or a good win. After that, both he and I had time to settle down and put a little perspective on the situation. Then you can be a coach to him. Like I said, my situation was different, as everyones is, but it is an idea for you.
  12. I would agree, all you can ask of anyone either in wrestling or not, is to work hard, and to try and become better. The kids that give you the most joy would have to be that kid that never wins, comes in and works his butt off for you and never complains about it. And then to see them reach a goal whatever it is has got to be the best feeling in the world. The best wrestler with a horrible attitude is just that, but a bad wrestler with a great outlook on life is so much more then they realize. I saw a kid a couple of weeks ago at the JV meet in Beech Grove. This kid due to physical defects has virtually no chance of being a great wrestler, but watching him step out on the mat and going at it as hard as he did was the most inspiring thing thing I saw all day long. While he may never be a great wrestler, he is without a doubt, a great person, and I made sure to tell all the kids on our team to make sure they watched him that day, and any time they felt like giving in, or thiinking something was to hard, to think about this kid, what he goes through just to get on the mat and then decide if quitting is an option.
  13. Those rankings kinda make the 130 class at marion county look kinda tough this weekend, # 1 at 125, #3,4,6 at 130 all in the same bracket.
  14. That would require them to care about a sport that does not use either pointy, or bouncy balls. I know at our school, that is the case. Wrestling is something that they put up with, not something to be taken seriously, and certainly nothing to take any time with trying to support. I really think they are the ones to make this sport get reach out there to more of the public/fans. just my opinion No question they are an integral part of getting the support that is needed. I see it in schools that have great programs, there is a level of support from the school staff that is missing from alot of schools.
  15. Talk to some of the high school coaches in the area to see if they can help you set up a club that runs correctly, failing that, go outside your area to some nearby schools and see what kind of help is there. This is some of the problems that our sport faces, teachers, and administrations not supporting the development of young wrestlers. Depends on what side of Lafayette that you live on as to who might be in the best position to help you.

  17. Ok, being devils advocate here, let me set the situation, then you let me know if you still want your son to not stall. Under the lights at conseco, having never made it to the finals, in his senior year, he is up 5-4 going into the 3rd period, and has chioce. He chooses down. He can either appear to be busy on bottom but not really try to get up, or he can hit it hard and get stuck on his back for a 2 or 3 point near fall while attempting an escape. Do you wish for him to give away a state title instead of wrestling smart and securing the win? I would argue that your son has a much bigger chance getting put on his back if he's just hanging out on bottom and letting a guy crank on him rather than actually trying to get away That depends on who is on top and how their style compares to his. In certain situations you are right, in others not so much. I have seen kids that can turn my son, and I have seen kids that cant. I am not arguing either way, Just saying that sometimes stalling is a good tactic up until the point the ref hits you with it.
  18. I am betting your wife wont like that one bit..... But seriously folks, as long as the child enjoys it, I would say let them start as soon as they want, I have been in rooms for a long time, and have seen just about everything from 1st year kids that are 14-15, to kids as young as 3-4 in the room rolling around. I would say that if they are exposed to it at a young age, you do need to protect against burning them out. I know for the 1st few years of my sons wrestling, it was always up to him if he went, or where he went, within reason. My daughter wanted to do what her big brother did, she was 5, I took her to a practice, set her up with another 5 year old, and showed her how to get into a stance, and explained a few things to her about the sport that I thought she could handle. I let them go live for about 10 seconds. The other kid put her in a head lock, when she got up she asked if she could go play with her dolls. That was the end of her time on the mat. She now is involved with swimming. so ya just gotta let them find thier own way.

I dont fault you for your thinking, I feel there is way to much stalling, and it should be called quicker, but sometimes stalling smart is a good tactic that should, and is used by quality wrestlers all over the state.
  20. Here is a copy of what the Indy Star has for a lead in to the Marion, and Johnson county and city tournaments that are going on this weekend. Not to complain, atleast they put the times in there. Wrestling Third-ranked Perry Meridian has 10 wrestlers seeded either first or second in this weekend's Marion County wrestling tournament, so the host Falcons look like the team to beat. But they should get plenty of competition from No. 8 Lawrence North and No. 17 Roncalli. Wrestling begins at 6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday. The Johnson County Tournament for wrestling begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at Indian Creek. The Johnson County Tournament uses a team round-robin format. Franklin has won 12 of the past 13 titles, but the Grizzly Cubs have an inexperienced team this year and No. 19 Center Grove looks like the team to beat. The City Tournament, won by Cathedral the past eight seasons, is at 9 a.m. Saturday at Howe. The Irish have 11 returning lettermen from last season.
  21. How did Grey end up as a 2 seed? I was wondering about that myself, the kid is a tough as nails wrestler that will win this going away. As will the Irish as a team. I predict they will win atleast 11 weight classes, maybe more.
  22. And we like the fact that he is down here teaching all those tricks. Ed is not only a great coach, he also teaches the young men how to become adult men. He preaches self reliance, accepting the results of your own actions, and that grades are more important then wrestling, and they will take you further.
  23. Wrestlers that are ranked according to this site that wil be here this weekend. 103 8) Jared McKinley 9 Perry Meridian 112 2) Brandon Nelsen 11 Lawrence North 4) Josh Kieffer 10 Roncalli 119 8) Justin Kieffer 10 Roncalli 125 1) Cashe Quiroga 12 Lawrence North (Wrestling 130 at County)* 16) Austin Marshall 12 Southport 130 3) D'Marcus Spencer 12 Pike 6) Nick Odom 12 Warren Central 12) Kirk Johnson 9 Perry Meridian (Wrestling 125 at County)* 135 9) Matt Rattay 10 Lawrence North 11) Chris Goodwin 12 Perry Meridian 140 9) Jacob Tonte 11 Perry Meridian 145 7) Jacob Tasseff 12 Perry Meridian 152 7) Blake Wood 12 Perry Meridian 160 10) Cory Hudgins 12 Perry Meridian 171 8) Bryce Grimes 12 Lawrence North 189 8) Michael Johnson-Jones 11 Warren Central 215 5) Gabriel Berry 11 Warren Central 6) Chris Schaefer 12 Perry Meridian 285 none As always, I think this is the complete list, if I have failed to mention anyone, it is by my lack of reading skills, and not a slight by any means.
  24. They are having great successm but they are also having a hard time figuring out that those are not handles that we were on our heads. But they are smart kids, and will figure that out pretty quickly.
